Light drenches a pass-through that serves as this South Carolina mountain home’s office, making it an ideal spot to work, daydream or take in the idyllic views. Dark taupe moldings add contrast and depth and are balanced by ivory walls. Charcoal grey and white draperies in a graphic pattern frame windows painted Sherwin Williams Black Fox. Woven blinds hang in the windows providing both privacy and light control. Traditional cabinets in a two-tone coloration are customized with gothic arches. The exteriors are painted the same taupe as the moldings and the interiors are stained to coordinate with the blinds, adding moments of rich brown at every glance. Filling the shelves are vintage books, family mementos and a lifetime of accolades. A Persian rug in aqua, gray and vanilla anchors the space while solidifying the color palette. A tufted leather desk chair with black nickel nails stands next to an ebony stained desk who’s intricately turned legs complement the home’s stately style. A taupe limed-oak side table holds a charming vintage telephone and ecru vase filled with local blooms. An architectural print framed in black hangs on a wall awash in mountain light. A glimpse of the guest room can be seen just beyond, its tufted chair beckoning visitors to make themselves at home.

The Ivy End Residence is cherished for its tasteful, finely detailed millwork and Gothic style. This addition doubled the size of the home, while taking design cues from the existing structure to enhance the high-class style of the addition and renovation. Through the use of antique bricks and an embellished roofline, the new project impeccably matches the character of the initial cottage. The result? Our client wanted their dream home to be an informal place where they could easily entertain and enjoy themselves. We were awarded the interior design and architectural specification package, which allowed us to recommend substantial alterations prior to construction, including raising the ceiling height, removing walls, reconfiguring rooms and entrances, and specifying appealing ceiling, wall and flooring treatments. In this dining room, we added a partial wall and a dark, wood stained transition arch. The partial wall increases the feel of privacy in the room. We cut wallpaper into squares and turned each square when hanging it, to create a subtle, textured visual effect. Each corner has nail head accents. We added a gothic-inspired valance to the window treatments and integrated the drapery cornices into crown molding. It is a classic Mediterranean Revival in the Floridian tradition of Mizner.” This single-family residential home in Gables Estates, Coral Gables, Florida, successfully pays respect to the architecture of the Mediterranean and Renaissance Italian styles. From the use of courtyards to the high level of detailing, this project emphasizes the most picturesque and expressive qualities of these styles. The residence reflects the visions of two of Coral Gables’ first architects, who designed beautiful and timeless architecture in this garden city to become a lasting piece in the landscape. This project not only captures the breathtaking views of Biscayne Bay, but with timeless style and lush landscaping, it creates a centerpiece for the view from the bay to Coral Gables. The home is designed as a long gallery, with spaces connected by courtyards and public realms. Another large inspiration for this project was the idea of the garden and landscape. With Coral Gables as a garden city, landscape became an integral part of the conception and design. The durability of Marvin products, their ability to stand up to the South Florida climate, as well as the Marvin attention to detail and proportion, made them the perfect choice to employ in a project of such high standards. The range of products allowed the freedom of design to explore all possibilities and turn visions into reality. The result was a lasting piece of architecture that would reflect a level of detail in every part of its structure. Old-World Charm in Alabama Private Residence / Mountain Brook, Alabama Architect: Jeffrey Dungan Builder: Bradford Residential Building Company E. F. San Juan created and supplied stair parts, exterior beams, brackets, rafters, paneling, and exterior moulding for this residence in the charming community of Mountain Brook, Alabama. Challenges: The most significant challenge on this project was the curved stair system just inside the main entrance. Its unique starting newel also served as a lamppost that bathes the foyer in a warm, welcoming light. Each piece of millwork supplied for this stunning residence needed to reflect the Old English village–inspired town while upholding modern standards of excellence. Solution: We worked with our stair parts partner, Oak Pointe, to build the white oak newel components for the main stairway, then we customized them further by hand at the E. F. San Juan plant. The details include a Gothic relief and the tapered radius section of the newel’s upper half. The result is truly beautiful and serves as the focal point of this old-world stair system. Inspiration for a large timeless u-shaped ceramic tile and beige floor open concept kitchen remodel in Kansas City with raised-panel cabinets, medium tone wood cabinets, granite countertops, beige backsplash, stone tile backsplash, an island, an undermount sink and paneled appliances

In the dining room, we created a dramatic arched entrance with stained walnut raised-paneling. We added a painted beam ceiling with tongue and groove V-notch slats to add interest and texture to the 10 ’ ceiling. To create trim with a flowing, seamless appearance, we integrated drapery cornices into the crown molding. Intense sun penetrates the room and led to the creation of a three-part window treatment. We incorporated stationary drapery panels for acoustics and to soften edges. We added roman shades for solar control and a gothic-inspired arched valance in embossed linen for a formal accent. The valance is a soft echo of the gothic motif on the fireplace surround in the home’s adjacent keeping room. On the walls, we had the installer cut grass cloth into squares and alternate their direction when he was hanging. This creates a subtle visual effect that changes as the sun dances through the room and you walk around the space. Square nail heads punctuate the intersections by being turned and set on their tips, creating a 3-dimensional diamond shape. Chris Little Photography
