This Starwood home, located in Frisco, TX, was originally designed in the Mediterranean-Tuscan style, typical of the late 90’s and early 2k period. Over the past few years, the home’s interior had been fully renovated to reflect a more clean-transitional look. Aquaterra’s goal for this landscape, pool and outdoor living renovation project was to harmonize the exterior with the interior by creating that same timeless feel. Defining new gathering spots, enhancing flow and maximizing space, with a balance of form and function, was our top priority.

The layered planting scheme along the front porch was designed to focus attention on the front porch and complement the existing paver walk. The suggestion to paint the posts, chinoiserie railing and porch trim a dark gray color added a dimension of sophistication to the simple frame house.

The geometric lines of the home and formal gardens are repeated rhythmically throughout the landscape. Bluestone steps, supported by fieldstone slabs, mirror the angles and proportions of the home's architecture, and create a continuous line with a fieldstone wall and hedge made of boxwood shrubs.
In this setting, (bluestone/)natural stone steps and a natural rock wall allow the garden design to maximize the existing contours of the landscape. Leading from the home and outdoor dining room to the pool and entertaining areas, these broad, low exterior bluestone/stone steps are easily navigated and don't require a railing.
The effect is a bluestone stairway that feels modern and elegant, and reflects the formal garden style seen throughout the landscape. Photo by Linda Oyama Bryan
