Inspiration for a mid-sized transitional backyard deck container garden remodel in Portland with no cover

This outdated Mid Century ranch built in late 1950’s was in serious need of an update. Our clients wanted a fresh contemporary feel that was simple in design and reflected the original Mid Century feel of the home. The new frosted Plexiglas railing allows the now open staircase and modern pendant to become part of the small dining area. White painted cabinetry with slab doors and minimal pulls add a lighter component and balance out the dark walnut cabinetry. The (3) built-in charging drawers, Legrand retractable outlets and a single door hood that opens with a light touch add a "cool" functional vibe to the space., Gray quartz countertops and a rectilinear white tile backsplash add serenity and tie in the stainless appliances giving the kitchen a modern feel. A wood waterfall countertop detail on the back of the island adds interest to the space and is anchored by the unique handblown wave glass pendants in a soft grey color. The clients' home backed up to deep woods and they wanted a room with floor to ceiling screens to allow cooling breezes to blow through. However, they had two young children and they wanted to protect the screens so we installed a clear glass railing system with white metal vertical posts hold the glass panels and solved the challenge. The floor is 12 x 24 porcelain tile. The ceiling is knotty pine and has 4 recessed ceiling lights and a ceiling fan for hot days. White trim provides a clean finished look. The comfy durable aluminum frame powder coated furniture is from Yardbird Outdoor Furniture in St. Louis Park, MN.

Twenty-four-foot windows span the back of the living room, breaking the bounds between indoors and out. "Rain storms are very exciting in our home", says Bobbie. "The diamond roof line creates waterfalls during a downpour, and the glass wall in our living room provides the perfect theater in which to watch them." Cove lighting runs all throughout the house. Constructed out of fluorescent tubing, wood, and milky plexi-glass, Stein strategically placed them to highlight doorways, windows and walls. The cocktail table was inherited from Matthew's grandmother. Much like a shadow box, the couple uses the table to display mementos and post cards from their travels together. From the doorway of the master bedroom, the entertainment loft appears to hover over the living space below. Franklin took advantage of the existing hay track in the peak of the ceiling, using it to conceal wiring needed to run the fan and lights. In order to preserve the quality of the ceiling, the architect covered the original slats with 6" insulated panels (SIP's). While his children were younger, Franklin recognized the need to child-proof the space. "I installed Plexiglas on all the railings so the kids couldn’t climb over them when they were very small," he explains. While some of the sheeting was removed over time, Franklin laughs, " The Plexiglas on the railings by the pool table will always stay since we are so bad at pool! The former boiler room of the Lebanon Mills jewelry manufacturing complex in Pawtucket, RI is transformed into a sleek, modern graphic design office and private residence. The space – featuring 30 foot high ceilings and the remnants of the original boiler room configuration – required a visionary approach, and the final product is a vision of spare, minimalist elegance. New floor systems were inserted into the grand ceiling spaces, along with luminescent, glowing acrylic panel feature wall systems. The kitchen and living area features 15 foot high windows leading out onto a deck with views onto the blackstone river.

This homeowner has long since moved away from his family farm but still visits often and thought it was time to fix up this little house that had been neglected for years. He brought home ideas and objects he was drawn to from travels around the world and allowed a team of us to help bring them together in this old family home that housed many generations through the years. What it grew into is not your typical 150 year old NC farm house but the essence is still there and shines through in the original wood and beams in the ceiling and on some of the walls, old flooring, re-purposed objects from the farm and the collection of cherished finds from his travels.
