This modern lake house is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The residence overlooks a mountain lake with expansive mountain views beyond. The design ties the home to its surroundings and enhances the ability to experience both home and nature together. The entry level serves as the primary living space and is situated into three groupings; the Great Room, the Guest Suite and the Master Suite. We needed a bridge to cross the dry creek bed, so I designed a version of a Japanese yatsuhashi, or zig zag, bridge. It is clad in concrete backer board. I wanted to simulate a granite mountain plateau with a boulder peak. The client purchased the concrete lantern which perfectly complements the entrance to this woodland garden. Photo by Jay Sifford

Adjacent to the Living Area are the steps leading up to the Master Suite and outdoor decks. The upper level beyond was dictated by the high ceiling (roof) over the existing Garage below. To the left is the interior Sculpture Plinth, with the sliding pocket doors (shown open) to the Master Bath and Closet in the center. This eight-foot privacy wall is open above, allowing light from the two-foot transoms to filter into the Master Bedroom The low wall to the center-right conceals the bed behind it, and the steel-and-glass framing can be seen in the background—including the continuous two-foot transom windows.
