From skiing in the Swiss Alps to water sports in Key Biscayne, a relocation for a Chilean couple with three small children was a sea change. “They’re probably the most opposite places in the world,” says the husband about moving
from Switzerland to Miami. The couple fell in love with a tropical modern house in Key Biscayne with architecture by Marta Zubillaga and Juan Jose Zubillaga of Zubillaga Design. The white-stucco home with horizontal planks of red cedar had them at hello due to the open interiors kept bright and airy with limestone and marble plus an abundance of windows. “The light,” the husband says, “is something we loved.”
While in Miami on an overseas trip, the wife met with designer Maite Granda, whose style she had seen and liked online. For their interview, the homeowner brought along a photo book she created that essentially offered a roadmap to their family with profiles, likes, sports, and hobbies to navigate through the design. They immediately clicked, and Granda’s passion for designing children’s rooms was a value-added perk that the mother of three appreciated. “She painted a picture for me of each of the kids,” recalls Granda. “She said, ‘My boy is very creative—always building; he loves Legos. My oldest girl is very artistic— always dressing up in costumes, and she likes to sing. And the little one—we’re still discovering her personality.’”

When the design for this kitchen evolved to include installing the range in the corner a warming counter was placed behind it. By adding heat lamps into the void behind the hood the cook can now prepare food and place it there to keep warm before serving.

Easy to use, the DITRA-HEAT-E-WiFi thermostat makes controlling and monitoring your DITRA-HEAT floor warming system convenient and accessible—from any location—on your smartphone and online.

Embedded in a Colorado ski resort and accessible only via snowmobile during the winter season, this 1,000 square foot cabin rejects anything ostentatious and oversized, instead opting for a cozy and sustainable retreat from the elements.

This zero-energy grid-independent home relies greatly on passive solar siting and thermal mass to maintain a welcoming temperature even on the coldest days.
The Wee Ski Chalet was recognized as the Sustainability winner in the 2008 AIA Colorado Design Awards, and was featured in Colorado Homes & Lifestyles magazine’s Sustainability Issue.

When our client requested a cozy retreat for her study, we re-configured a narrow 6’ x 12’ space off the Master Bedroom hall. By combining 2 separate rooms, a dated wet bar and a stackable washer/dryer area, we captured the square footage needed for the Study. As someone who likes to spread out and have multiple projects going on at the same time, we designed the L-shaped work surface and created the functionality she longed for. A tall storage cabinet just wide enough to house her files and printer, anchors one end while an oversized ‘found’ vintage bracket adorns the other, giving openness to an otherwise tight space. Previously separated by a wall, the 2 windows now bring cheerful natural light into the singular space. Thick floating shelves above the work surface feature LED strip lighting which is especially enticing at night. A sliding metal chalkboard opposite of the worksurface is easily accessible and provides a fun way to keep track of daily activities. The black and cream “star” patterned floor tile adds a bit of whimsy to the Study and compliments the rustic charm of the family’s antique cowhide chair. What is not to love about the compact yet inviting space?

Recessing the dishwasher into the corner had the bonus of increasing the usable counter space to the right of the sink. Specifying a corner appliance garage above it provides storage for small appliances. The pop-up design of the appliance garage door offers an alternative to the standard tambour style door. Corner angled upper cabinets provide great storage for dishware. Why not show them off by including glass doors!

The wine cooler was created to resemble something found in a modern restaurant, with accents of warm walnut, steel and glass blending seamlessly with the home’s finishings. The modern wine cooler makes an impressive addition to the entrance area of this waterfront home, offering easy access to the wine collection from all living and dining areas.
The modern Nek Rite system used allows the wine bottles to be stored horizontally to showcase the labels, simplifying inventory
maintenance. The cooler is 83 cubic feet and has capacity for 264 bottles. The CellarPro 1800 XTS chiller was chosen to allow the wine collection to be stored at a cooler temperature than the surrounding spaces of the home.

Our poster project for The Three P's, this small midcentury home south of campus has great bones but lacked vibrancy - a je ne sais quoi that the clients were searching to savoir once and for all. SYI worked with them to nail down a design direction and furniture plan, and they decided to invest in the big-impact items first: built-ins and lighting and a fresh paint job that included a beautiful deep blue-green line around the windows. The vintage rug was an Etsy score at an awesome price, but only after the client spent months scouring options and sources online that matched the vision and dimensions of the plan. A good year later, the West Elm sofa went on sale, so the client took advantage; some time after that, they painted the kitchen, created the drop zone / bench area, and rounded out the room with occasional tables and accessories. Their lesson: in patience, and details, there is beauty.

The open plan dining space was designed with the family in mind. U shaped booth seating was chosen for comfortable seating that is also perfect for entertaining guests. An indoor herb garden is placed next to the dining table for easy access from the kitchen and this adds an element of nature to the space.

Congratulations to our winner, Debra O!
"I had purchased a throw pillow online and wanted bench cushions to match. I found that the pattern was Sunbrella. After extensive research, I found Patio Lane had access to the same pattern.
"The cushions fit perfectly with the decor in my sunroom. The workmanship is superb. The crew at Patio Lane were great to work with throughout the entire process.
"Thank you again for being a part of our sunroom experience!"
