Mediterranean exterior home idea in Philadelphia

Photography by Ken Wyner 2101 Connecticut Avenue (c.1928), an 8-story brick and limestone Beaux Arts style building with spacious apartments, is said to have been “the finest apartment house to appear in Washington between the two World Wars.” (James M. Goode, Best Addresses, 1988.) As advertised for rent in 1928, the apartments were designed “to incorporate many details that would aid the residents in establishing a home atmosphere, one possessing charm and dignity usually found only in a private house… the character and tenancy (being) assured through careful selection of guests.” Home to Senators, Ambassadors, a Vice President and a Supreme Court Justice as well as numerous Washington socialites, the building still stands as one of the undisputed “best addresses” in Washington, DC.) So well laid-out was this gracious 3,000 sf apartment that the basic floor plan remains unchanged from the original architect’s 1927 design. The organizing feature was, and continues to be, the grand “gallery” space in the center of the unit. Every room in the apartment can be accessed via the gallery, thus preserving it as the centerpiece of the “charm and dignity” which the original design intended. Programmatic modifications consisted of the addition of a small powder room off of the foyer, and the conversion of a corner “sun room” into a room for meditation and study. The apartment received a thorough updating of all systems, services and finishes, including a new kitchen and new bathrooms, several new built-in cabinetry units, and the consolidation of numerous small closets and passageways into more accessible and efficient storage spaces.

arry spends thousands of hours each year tinkering away in his home garage workshop, which sports enough metal-forming and fabrication equipment to furnish a small machine shop: a Webb lathe, a Bridgeport-type mill, a Miller welder, a bead blaster, a Kaiser rotary compressor, drill presses, sanders, metal band saws and a Heberly cold saw. But with the seemingly infinite array of parts, tools, plans and instruction manuals required to satisfy his passion, Larry realized that the end result of his work will only be as good as how organized his shop is. So he did what anyone who takes his workspace seriously would do. He called Lista. Rave reviews help Larry choose. "A friend has Lista products in his home garage and he's been raving about them for years," Larry says. "When we moved into this house, I knew that Lista is what I wanted." Larry's workshop now includes a row of Lista modular drawer storage cabinets, complete with a butcher block top and a kneehole that allows him to use the units as a workbench. "I spent a lot of time looking through Lista's catalog and website, and what Lista said about their products is true; they're as good as advertised!" But Larry is quick to qualify the success of his workspace organization choice by heaping more than a little praise on his Lista solutions representative. "Woody Woodward of Woodward Sales, my Lista distributor, came to the house. We looked at everything I needed to store, and he came up with a plan. And the support doesn't end there. Lista's been great about getting me any replacement parts I need quickly."

This garage is part of a townhome. The townhome is very small inside and is in a tight-knit community where on Fridays, they have a community wine party, play music and everyone opens their garages and visits. He still stores his “garage things” there but everything is in cabinets behind doors. He has added a flat screen TV, surround sound and a drinks fridge, all while still being able to park two cars inside. A humble staircase rises to the occasion in this contemporary renovation in Huntington Woods. A favorite aspect of this 2018 project is the mitered stair treads and tapered risers of the lowest three steps that angle out in a delicate, slightly exaggerated fashion. The subtle acute angles add a sense of lightness and panache to the staircase. Wrapping the stairs allows the staircase to open to the great room and eliminates the need for a handrail on the great room side. A custom iron railing with walnut handrail extends from the floor all the way to the upstairs landing in a continuous fluid motion. The iron supports are adorned with parallelograms that echo the rise of the staircase and add to the lighthearted mix of disparate angles in the space. The iron rail design runs parallel with the stair stringer, creating a linear relationship between the stair and railing. An inspired pattern of interlocking hexagons on the black and white carpet runner adds playfulness and movement. A figure appears to fly up the stairs in a 1925 advertising poster by Jean d'Ylen, whimsically placed above the landing. Natural light from above floods the steps.
