the bamboo is a clumping variety called Bambusa eutuldoides viridi-vittata , Asian lemon bamboo. This variety is a clumper and you do not need to contain it, however, do allow an 8'by 10' area for its ultimate growth. Bamboo does require constant maintenance and you will need to do some research for the specific variety you choose. This home owner didn't want to keep mowing his back yard. So we came up with a shade garden design that eliminated his grass and added beauty and function to his back yard. We used mature Natchez Crape Myrtles, Asian Jasmine, Variegated Hostas, and Autumn Fern.

Design ideas for a mid-sized rustic full sun front yard stone formal garden for summer.

The front areas of this landscape were transformed from a tired, water thirsty lawn into a contemporary setting with dramatic concrete pavers leading to the home's entrance and a new driveway using large concrete slabs with small black pebbles set in resin. Plants for sun and part shade complete this project. They include Bulbine frutescens 'Hallmark', a non-stop bloomer in northern california with orange/yellow flowers, with Creeping Raspberry (Rubus pentalobus) a tough ground covers that forms a dense matt. Elfin thyme ground cover softens the concrete pathway, and mondo grass on other side of pathway with a Japanese Maple tree accented with Mexican pebbles. Completed in February 2014. On this side of the garden is a shady and restful stop. When you look from the inside, it looks woodsy and relaxing. Different ground covers were used next to each other to create texture: bold Asian Jasmine leaves, next to wispy Mondo Grass, next to interesting Japanese Holly Fern leaves. A Japanese Maple anchors the corner, adding subtle color to the shady space.

Entertaining and enjoying the views were a primary design goal for this project. The project includes a large camaru deck with built-in seating. The concrete steps and pavers lead down to the water's edge. I included a sunken patio on one side and a beautiful Buddha statue on the other, surrounded by succulents and other low-water, contemporary plantings. The landscape design for this private residence brings together a diverse array of elements to create an ethereal, multi-sensory experience where sound, movement, colour and scent are simultaneously evoked. Shielded by a forty foot hedge, the site challenged us to create an exterior, yet interior, world where Asian and Western influences intersect. In honouring the traditions of Feng Shui, the retaining wall does not sit directly on the entrance. Meditation pathways lead to areas of retreat and socialization (including an outdoor fire, a restored pool and covered seating area). An ergonomic garden and potting station lined with fruit trees allows the client to grow her own plants and vegetables. A multi-leveled water feature is framed with lush camellias and peonies; the landscape is lined with evergreens and decorated with Chinese basalt and local granite. The multi-sensory design comes to life in the grove of Shirofugen cherry trees as it sheds its petals to the music of a custom Corten steel wind chime sculpture made by English artist David Harber. A weather station was placed on site for a month to determine the weight of the chimes—each one set to the pentatonic scale. This is a space where our clients can grow and evolve their lives with the seasons.
