This is a modern take on a classic garden. The paving was designed with precision and then softened with lush planting. Two distinct spaces, a dining area and lounging spot, are delineated with herringbone pavers and linked by a flagstone walk. The walk takes the edge of the design’s geometry and avoids a sense of monotony that might result from repetition of the larger spaces’ paving pattern. design: Studio TOOP, 2008 location: Driebergen, NL status: built in 2008, Tuinvreugd photo: Jolanthe Lalkens, 2010 A letter from the town of Driebergen explaining that there were subsidies available if residents wanted to build a rainwater catchment in their garden was the impulse necessary for Ben and Ine to finally redo their garden. About to start retirement they had more time to garden and enjoy being at home. Ine hd been a gardener for years and looked for the opportunity to spend more time on the hobby and Ben was already working out the technical details of the rainwater catchment and ponds. Studio TOOP helped them translate their wishes and interests into a clear design that made smart use of the small elevation change in the garden. Sequences of steps and raised beds separate each section of the garden. Three lines - a row of three ponds, a row of crab apple trees and a rose covered pergola - emphasize the gardens length. Each pond is 15 cm lower than the next, allowing the water to flows from one to another, and then to another lower lying pond at the end of the pergola. Under a lid that works as a bench integrated into two of the raised beds are the rainwater tanks.

This penthouse awning installation near New York City shows 2,000+ square feet of dining area that is now completely protected by a waterproof retractable enclosure. The desire was for a penthouse awning that provided protection from the sun, but was also heavy-duty enough to handle inclement weather. The owner wanted to preserve the Al-fresco outdoor dining feel of the rooftop patio, but wanted to be able to hit a button for on-demand protection when needed. This restaurant can now book additional functions, generating more revenue from the penthouse than before the awning was installed - guaranteeing their patrons a protected space. The Gennius is a retractable pergola awning SPECIFICALLY designed to handle inclement weather. Rainwater is routed downward with the slope of the fabric, and captured within a gutter integrated within the awning's supporting framework. Rainwater then escapes the gutter through the support posts and is diverted away from the entertaining area. Unfolding in a fluid series of experiences, this large garden in Pasadena blends modern and mediterranean styles. The front garden features a modern flagstone walk and plantings in shades of greens and blue-grey. In the center of the property, a flagstone courtyard rings a large Coast Live Oak (Quercus agrifolia), and a new ipe walkway provides a stylish entrance to the back garden's steep upper slope while helping to prevent erosion. In the back of the property, rolling gardens of colorful succulents, shrubs and grasses lead to a meadow of Berkeley Sedge (Carex tumicola) with shimmering olive trees. A large ipe deck, with cut-outs for a mature eucalyptus, beckons at the bottom of the garden.
