A block of compressed, dried coir (coconut husk fiber). Coir soaks up 5 times its weight in water, and holds it in the potting mix for plants. Unlike peat moss, coir won't repel water if it dries out. An abundant byproduct of the coconut industry, it's more sustainable than peat. Blue stain pine made a wonderful choice for a cozy basement space in this rustic home. Ponderosa pine blue stain tongue and groove really is a one-of-a-kind selection for paneling and/or ceiling paneling, along with a variety of other uses. Its natural color gives it the appearance of being stained, but of course it really isn’t so no labor or maintenance is necessary to achieve the look. This blue stain is a sort of naturally occurring phenomenon that we get when Pine Beetles burrow into regular pine trees and inhabit the wood for a period of time, until the tree dies and they move on; the blue color of blue stain pine is a byproduct of the Pine Beetles’ presence. This lumber would need to be harvested anyway, so being able to put it to use in beautiful interior applications is a huge bonus to the environment.

Noting the debris in the foreground, imagine what this place looked like prior to the landscape renovation. The challenge was to bring dignity and calm to such an eclectic mess of funky structures and exposed utilities. How to unify aged chocolate metal siding, sterile, glaring white aluminum siding and a beautiful old wooden shed? This gate is the first hint of the leitmotif that attempts to do just that. Conceived and fabricated by artist Jes Sanderford, his materials are a byproduct of the solar industry in which he works and collected on his backcountry mountain forays exploring old mines and camps. September 21st is the first day of Fall. I know we don’t want to think about it yet, but it is good to prepare and get the chimney swept early. Why? According to the Farmer’s Almanac, they are predicting a colder and snowier Winter.
