This almost one-acre property hosts an historic Victorian home. The landscape design included an eight-foot-tall brick wall which required a variance, a retaining wall, new brick paving, a water feature, containers, and landscaping throughout the property. A wide variety of sun and shade loving plants and containers were used to create Victorian-style gardens. A flowering shrub border at the wall provides year-round bloom color.

To create a colonial outdoor living space, we gut renovated this patio, incorporating heated bluestones, a custom traditional fireplace and bespoke furniture. The space was divided into three distinct zones for cooking, dining, and lounging. Firing up the built-in gas grill or a relaxing by the fireplace, this space brings the inside out.

We needed a bridge to cross the dry creek bed, so I designed a version of a Japanese yatsuhashi, or zig zag, bridge. It is clad in concrete backer board. I wanted to simulate a granite mountain plateau with a boulder peak. The client purchased the concrete lantern which perfectly complements the entrance to this woodland garden.

Cut bluestone lines the path to the Campania fountain. The middle of the path is planted with creeping thyme and the lime green ground cover is Creeping Jenny. There's also a little perennial geranium mixed in.

Linear paving patterns, create the bluestone walk and granite slabs frame the gravel motor court. Bands of layered plantings complement the structure of the adjacent hardscape, providing four seasons of interest. The black Farnley planters accent the finish of the steel and glass overhangs.

The homeowners of this old home in Greenwood Village, Colorado wanted two things: a space large enough to hold the dinner and cocktail parties they often hosted for business, and adhering to a strong traditional French design. The hardscape and custom pergolas are the foundation for a large entertaining area large enough for several tables. A Campania International fountain from Birdsall & Co. in a custom-made basin provides the focal point to the dining area. Several levels of retaining walls provide not only symmetry, accentuated by planted cast stone containers and pedestals, but also space for a bocce ball court at the highest level. A built-in barbecue and fire pit surrounding by teak Adirondack chairs make for a more intimate dining and conversation space, balancing out similar 'outdoor rooms' sprinkled throughout the landscape. Gravel pathways are reminiscent of traditional French gardens.
