Inspiration for a large cottage master light wood floor and brown floor bedroom remodel in Dallas with white walls and no fireplace

This complete home remodel and addition began with the owners desire to renovate and update the original forty year old vacation home and features. The client was recommended to us by their friends who had hired us to remodel a vacation home in Carmel Valley. We began by selecting Jim Stroupe, a highly qualified local Architect, to devise an entirely new front facade and interior layout. He met with the client and quickly proposed a design which captured the Baja California look she had in mind. With a few revisions and another client meeting, we soon had a finished set of plans. Home design - eclectic home design idea in Dallas

Pak Cheung This section is a new gable dormer that adds much-needed volume to this attic. The choice of paint color added bright and playful feel to the space. The challenge when adding a dormer is maintaining structural support of the ridge beam. In this case, given the age of the house, finding point loads to support the existing beam would have created unknown conditions and required renovation work on the first and basement levels. The engineer's solution was to create an A-frame girder (see the triangle shape on the top left of photo) supported on existing exterior bearing walls. The new gable dormer is tied into this girder. We installed new hardwood flooring throughout the space. Though the attic had two large existing skylights, to bring in more natural light we added two more skylights—one in the bathroom and one in the hallway. We also installed new recessed lights throughout the entire space and in the bathroom.

Deck and Patio also installed on their home four downspouts to collect nearly three-quarters of their roof runoff. “This captured rainwater also gets filtered,” says Dave. “Filtered containers screen out twigs and small debris before it is captured in the same underground Aquascape reservoir that holds the rainwater collected by the pavers. Then it’s all recycled for use in irrigation and to top off the backyard pond and waterfalls after any evaporation.”

In Southern California we get very little rainfall. The rainfall that we do get usually is piped from the roof and landscape into the street where it ends up taking the oils, pesticides, and other chemicals straight into the ocean. A house like this can capture 10,000+ gallons of rain water, just from the roof alone! This is where rain gardens come in. This home is capturing the rain water from the roof and any overflow irrigation water from the landscape into a rain garden. Thick layers of mulch soak up water and feed the soil as it composts...creating a soil sponge. The rain garden was created to capture the first 1" of rain or the "first flush"- the most polluted part of the rain water. The rain garden filters the water and cleans it.
