Allen Ross Architecture was hired to design a new retreat center that includes a multi-purpose Party Barn with a 3/4 basketball court, guest house, pool, sports field, tennis court, adventure course, outdoor kitchen, and changing cabana. Careful thought was given to the component relationships and how one moves through the site. Elements were configured to address function, aesthetics, security, and safety. Code mandated pool enclosure requirements were met without blocking views and without enclosure fencing. Adjacent wetlands, storm water management requirements, and multiple zoning limitations necessitated thoughtful permitting applications. Zoning Board of Appeals and Planning Board approvals were required. Extensive infrastructure improvements and property grading were needed to meet the regulatory and client program requirements. The design intent was a crisp transitional style that is sympathetic with the Georgian buildings located elsewhere on the site. Timber trusses support the guest house roof and steel moment frames support the barn roof.

This is the first home of a young professional couple. Their main goal was to remodel their kitchen to create a more open feel. At the time the kitchen included a built in bench and table that was dated and nonfunctional. We worked together to create a new layout on our design software program. It was very helpful for our clients to see their new kitchen in 3-D drawings. We removed a bearing wall between the dining room and kitchen and opened it up for a breakfast bar contained in the peninsula. During demolition we found that there was no foundation under the floor joists in the concealed crawl space below the kitchen and no footings under the bearing wall. This kitchen had not been renovated since the salt box colonial house was built in the 1960’s. The new owner felt it was time for a complete refresh with some traditional details and adding in the owner’s contemporary tastes. At initial observation, we determined the house had good bones; including high ceilings and abundant natural light from a double-hung window and three skylights overhead recently installed by our client. Mixing the homeowners desires required the skillful eyes of Cathy and Ed from Renovisions. The original kitchen had dark stained, worn cabinets, in-adequate lighting and a non-functional coat closet off the kitchen space. In order to achieve a true transitional look, Renovisions incorporated classic details with subtle, simple and cleaner line touches. For example, the backsplash mix of honed and polished 2” x 3” stone-look subway tile is outlined in brushed stainless steel strips creating an edgy feel, especially at the niche above the range. Removing the existing wall that shared the coat closet opened up the kitchen to allow adding an island for seating and entertaining guests. We chose natural maple, shaker style flat panel cabinetry with longer stainless steel pulls instead of knobs, keeping in line with the clients desire for a sleeker design. This kitchen had to be gutted to accommodate the new layout featuring an island with pull-out trash and recycling and deeper drawers for utensils. Spatial constraints were top of mind and incorporating a convection microwave above the slide-in range made the most sense. Our client was thrilled with the ability to bake, broil and microwave from GE’s advantium oven – how convenient! A custom pull-out cabinet was built for his extensive array of spices and oils. The sink base cabinet provides plenty of area for the large rectangular stainless steel sink, single-lever multi-sprayer faucet and matching filtered water dispenser faucet. The natural, yet sleek green soapstone countertop with distinct white veining created a dynamic visual and principal focal point for the now open space. While oak wood flooring existed in the entire first floor, as an added element of color and interest we installed multi-color slate-look porcelain tiles in the kitchen area. We also installed a fully programmable floor heating system for those chilly New England days. Overall, out client was thrilled with his Mission Transition.

The countertops were marble and showing wear. Ultimately the client wanted a more functional kitchen, updated appearance, easy to use and something they would feel reflected the warmth of their family. Visually the new kitchen is stunning. It combines an old world feel with some modern twists. The custom stone hood and large stoves became a focal point in the kitchen. The antiqued red island softens the look of the stoves, compliments the moss tones of the ceiling beams and creates a warm touch in the heart of the kitchen. Perimeter counters are made of leathered Taj-Mahal granite, and the island is polished Typhoon Bordeaux granite. Above the island are hand blown glass pendants that give a little shimmer and sparkle to the old world feel. The Arabesque style handmade ceramic backsplash pulls together the tones from the cabinets, countertops and ceiling. As part of our environmentally conscious building, we used KCMA (Kitchen Cabinet Manufactures Association) Environmental Stewardship Program certified cabinets and replaced all of the lighting with energy efficient lighting. Outcome is warm, highly functional and inviting space for family and friends to gather.

Adirondack Camp is a spirited interpretation of the local vernacular. Our clients had bought and extensively renovated a small old log cabin on a lake in the Adirondacks a couple of years before coming to us to help them expand the program with three additional bedrooms and bathrooms so that their whole family could be there together. The addition we designed took the form of a tower, with one bedroom and bathroom on each floor, connected to the old cabin by a hyphen which serves as the new entry. The tower is visually a vertical foil to the more horizontal cabin and gives the master bedroom on the top floor a lovely view through the pine trees to the lake. My clients home is a wonderful combination of styles. On the exterior, the architectural style is Georgian/Georgian Colonial, covered in used bricks. Their interiors however, are more contemporary and transitional. The combination of these styles was the design program I was given for this entryway. I configured the size, shape and frequency of the hand-beveled glass background pieces so they matched those of the used bricks on the exterior. I offered this idea to bring the exterior into the interior, and vice versa. There are many textures of clear glass used for the circular elements, as well as highlights created form hand-beveled glass as well. Since this entry faced south, I selected beveled glass with the intended effect (seen above) to flood the foyer with prismatic color cast through the beveled glass. Ann Kenkel Interiors. Gwin Hunt Photography Complete gut of Watergate Penthouse and renovation. Ann Kenkel gutted a very contemporary Penthouse which had no molding and concrete floors. Installed Walnut flooring, redesigned space, designed all built ins, and decorated PH. Space was for a middle aged bachelor who wanted the spaces to have multi function. He wanted the Living Room to function as a library as well as a formal living room. I designed very elegant walnut bookcases with built in sound speakers. The furniture is comfortable yet upholstered in elegant fabrics. The coffee table was a high end custom Minton Spidell coffee table which elevates the space to a more formal look. The entry hall showcases a very fine antique mirror over a console with fine inlaid banding. The living room has rich chenille fabrics, ultra suede pillows with trim and a tapestry chenille on the chairs. Kenkel designed a white wood mantle deep enough that weighty accessories. There needed to be greater division between the living room and dining. AK designed an open etagere to contain large crystal pieces with beautiful lighting. It created enough of a screen to provide some privacy between the rooms in addition to making both rooms appear longer. The dining room needed to serve as a home office with a computer station and two comfortable chairs for the client to hold a business meeting. I also needed to function as a dining room. AK designed a built in unit which housed glass shelf cabinets on either side of an open space. The open space had a counter which was appropriate height for a computer as well as a a serving service at dinner time. Office equipment, printer, fax, router was all housed in a lower cabinet. The pendant chandelier is a very fine antique french piece. AK designed a built in unit for clothes, a flat screen tv and speakers. There was a large roof top patio which had beautiful views of the Washington Monument. AK created a thorough design for extensive entertaining, in her 3d drafting program. The client moved before the patio could be built out. Draperies are made out of Jim Thompson raw silk. Antique bronze dore candelsticks, bronze urn on fireplace, telescope to see city in etagere.

Completed in 2011 this 4 BR, 3 1/2 bath custom home is situated on a very tight urban infill lot in Northern, Virginia. Our clients were relocating to the D.C. area from New England and wanted to retain some of the New England vernacular they were familiar with in their new home. Due to heavy zoning restrictions, stylistic CCR's and a large program of almost 7000 sf, our design response is a modern take on a traditional hipped 4-square. We intentionally kept the skin and form of the building simple in order to contain cost and allow for a higher level of interior finish. The main level employs our favorite Great Room scheme that merges cooking, eating and entertaining into one seamless space that flows onto an expansive deck overlooking the rear yard. The entry elevation welcomes guests with a traditional front porch and stone path that passes by a small rain garden. The basement accommodates a guest room, media room, exercise area, and full shop while the upper level orients 2 kid's bedrooms, a Jack-n-Jill bath and the master suite toward a territorial view of the rear yard. All of this program is housed beneath a hipped roof that minimizes the scale of the house while presenting a thoughtful appearance toward the street and neighbors.
