The Family Room has very tall ceilings so white wainscoting was used to visually lower the height of the room when seated around the new gas fireplace. Clean white display accents provide contrast without too much visual clutter. John Wilbanks Photography

The homeowners desired an outdoor space that felt more rustic than their refined interior spaces, but still related architecturally to their house. Cement plaster support arbor columns provide enough of visual tie to the existing house exterior. Oversized wood beams and rafter members provide a unique outdoor atmosphere. Structural bolts and hardware were minimized for a cleaner appearance. Structural connections and supports were engineered to meet California's stringent earthquake standards. Ali Atri Photography

This mid-century modern party pad exudes an untouchable spirit of Beverly Hills leaning back to the 60s and jumping forward to today’s smart home living. The house, located in the esteemed Trousdale Estates, is all about lifestyle and with a full Savant Systems integration, there is not a space forgotten. Escape to the dedicated home theater where the 140” screen will dominate or make a drink and take in the view of LA from the pool. Collapse the house walls, let the TVs down and you can bet that this place is anything but boring.

Klopf Architecture, Arterra Landscape Architects, and Flegels Construction updated a classic Eichler open, indoor-outdoor home. Expanding on the original walls of glass and connection to nature that is common in mid-century modern homes. The completely openable walls allow the homeowners to truly open up the living space of the house, transforming it into an open air pavilion, extending the living area outdoors to the private side yards, and taking maximum advantage of indoor-outdoor living opportunities. Taking the concept of borrowed landscape from traditional Japanese architecture, the fountain, concrete bench wall, and natural landscaping bound the indoor-outdoor space. The Truly Open Eichler is a remodeled single-family house in Palo Alto. This 1,712 square foot, 3 bedroom, 2.5 bathroom is located in the heart of the Silicon Valley. If you want a place to kick off the cleats, tie your shoes or just collapse for a moment after the long run so you can gather enough strength to hit the shower, then you will love the storage bench located just in front of the window. Since you are serious about sports, “hydration, hydration, hydration,” has become your mantra. You will never run out of water, sports drinks and other cold beverages when you keep the shelves, shown here, fully stocked. Serious sports storage doesn’t end there. Look just above the cubbies and the bench and you see 3 ceiling storage units for off-season items like outdoor seat cushions, personal floatation devices, coolers and camping equipment.
