This under-stair wine cellar presented several design challenges. Chief amongst which: how to avoid making this cramped, dark space feel like an afterthought compared to the grandeur of the rest of the home. The design team at Architectural Plastics quickly came up with a solution. A series of stepped height, clear acrylic wine racks offered maximum storage for the multi-level ceiling. New Additions to Hoover + Hill This project is a continuation of the renovation and updating work Flavin Architects had previously completed at the 1958 Wales house, designed by architect Henry Hoover and Walter Hill. Our clients, a young family, desired more space for guests, a home office, a yoga studio, and covered car parking. The challenge was to respect the architects’ original vision and not to interfere with the perfect cruciform plan of the house. To accomplish these goals, we converted the existing garage/workshop structure into a guest house and then designed a new, separate carport/storage building. The new carport building shares the low-slope gable of the original Hoover structure. The post and beam structure characteristic of Hoover’s design is updated through the use of galvanized steel posts and I beams. The galvanized beams cantilever to support a sheltered walkway leading from the parking to a guest house terrace defined in relationship to the three structures surrounding it. The terrace is paved in slate with a central rain garden. Wood lattice clads the carport, providing good ventilation and letting the building glow like a lantern at night. Our guest house renovation celebrates the unique structural timber ceiling of the original garage. We replaced opaque plywood trusses with a slender cable truss structurally engineered by Webb Structural Services. This cable truss allows for a view of the timber ceiling. A wall of glass facing the courtyard replaced the original garage door. A murphy bed in the rear room enables quick conversion from guest quarters to weight room.

Kitchen in a 1920s Colonial Revival home was totally gutted and renovated. In addition to updated electrical, plumbing, and lighting, new windows were added bringing in lots of natural light. Antique oak beams and used brick veneer provide contrast and lend a rustic touch. Warm site-finished white oak floors ground the space and provide more contrast, as do the natural grass shades. Stainless steel appliances provide a sleek modern edge without overwhelming the space, while a crackle subway tile accented with beaded and black liners give a nod to the traditional. Countertops of Olympian White Vermont Danby marble in the main work area have a subtle gray veining.

Scott and Deneen Knisely built their handcrafted log home in Lock Haven Pennsylvania with hope to preserve a piece of their community’s history. In 2002, the Kniselys lived near a 20-acre property that included the Rocky Point Lodge, a locally known log house dating back more than 70 years. The building was serving as a restaurant at the time, but had taken on many roles over the years—first, and most notably, as a Boy Scout camp. When Scott heard a rumor that the property might be going on the market, he had a word with the owner, expressing his interest in buying it. Six weeks later, the acreage was his. “We loved the property and the building,” says Deneen, “but it was too damaged to be saved.” So they got to work researching companies to build the new home that would replace the old one. Since so many local people have fond childhood memories of time spent at the lodge, the Kniselys decided that the new structure should resemble the old one as closely as possible, so they looked for a design that would use the same footprint as the original. After a quick trip to Virginia to look at an existing house, they chose a modified version of the “Robinson,” a 3,750-square-foot plan by Hearthstone Inc. “When the house was being built, I researched things such as period molding depth, wainscoting height and the look of the floors,” says Deneen. Hearthstone even had the logs sandblasted to give them a weathered look. “We just love the rustic, warm feeling of a log home,” Deneen adds. “No other home compares.” The home is made from large-diameter eastern white pine in a profile from the Bob Timberlake series. “The log is sawn on two sides, then hand-hewn to a 6-inch thickness with varying heights,” says Ernie. To top off the home’s vintage look, Pat Woody of Lynchburg, Virginia, got to work on the chinking. Pat specializes in period reproductions and historical homes. The variations in the chinking are the perfect finishing touch to bring home the 19th-century flavor the Kniselys desired.

"Really good product I bought a set of Vintner series redwood wine rack kits for my little wine room. After looking around the web at several options, I decided to try Wine Cellar Innovations first. However, after trying to sort out exactly what combination of kits I should get I contacted the company to take advantage of their free design service. After a quick exchange of emails with Fabian, and a couple of days, I got some sample layouts. After looking at a few more iterations I finally placed my order. The kits arrived in several boxes, in good shape and with everything I needed. The kits assembled flawlessly and the redwood was straight and without knots. After sorting through the pieces and the directions the assembly went fairly quickly. I used a pneumatic brad nailer which I highly recommend - without it you might need two people. I did it all without help. The kits I purchased stacked 3' racks on top of 4' racks for a total height of 7', and also got 2 corner units. I also got the "display" option which displays the bottle label for one bottle in each column - it slightly reduces the number of bottles but I think it will make it easier for me to keep track of what I have stored in each column. The racks are sturdy and solid. I really love the finished product. It looks custom made it fits so tightly into the room - only about 2" of space on one end of the rack. I am really a novice at this, so I don't have any other products to compare this to, but based on my experience I would recommend this company to anyone. Hope this review helps." Scott P.
