This client requested that we design her new kitchen space to look and function with her and her family’s usage in mind. She was not happy with her existing kitchen due to builder-grade ceramic flooring, lack of countertop space, poor lighting, inadequate and unorganized storage and the closed off feel of the area. Renovisions resolved all of these issues by designing and building an impressive, transitional styled kitchen; delivering a beautifully well thought-out space that provides a multi-functional approach and meets the needs of this busy and dynamic household. Typically, we encounter challenges in every project, and this was no different. The upstairs bathroom plumbing ran across the entire length of the kitchen sink wall and it was necessary to work with it by moving the plumbing as far up as possible and then building a soffit to hide it. Creating a space that has a more open feel was top of mind for our client. Installing a new wood floor that matched the existing dining room floor helped with this and in addition, warmed up the room. By relocating the refrigerator to the opposite wall and adding a bar area at the end toward the family room, the flow of traffic for family members and guests became more managed. The open floor plan allowed for additional island cabinets to accommodate smart storage and better functionality when prepping meals, sitting to eat or gathering with friends and family. We believe having ample countertop surface space is a critical improvement in any renovation and this particular project now boasts a large countertop area with a stunning wide vein pattern that accentuates the design instead of overpowering it. The soft look of the Blanco Arabescato quartz enhances the space and looks lovely with the white inset styled cabinetry. Beauty and function go hand-in-hand in this kitchen with several exceptional elements such as under-cabinet lighting with dimmers to control the mood light. Glass doors were added to the wall cabinets which flank the wine rack for displaying their decorative glassware and a beverage cooler below provided added convenience and access to cold beverages. The GE Café line of appliances in ‘Slate’ and ‘Stainless Steel’ finishes are a stunning contrast here. The sensational looking decorative marble 6”x6” backsplash tile over the gas range and in the bar area creates nice focal points by creating a unique look for her that family and guests love. Convenient and functional elements were added such as a blind corner pull-out for easier pot/pan storage, a sweep-o-vac under cabinet vacuum system for those constant quick clean-ups, a pull-out caddy under the sink base for storage of cleaning products and a protective mat to collect potential spills. Our client let us know it was time for a change and we listened. She shared a few pictures she loved from a home magazine, we shared our insight and then designed/built the kitchen of her dreams! … A fabulous and functional space.

For this outdoor space project, the local weather posed the biggest challenge for the design professionals at Backyard Specialist. The homeowners envisioned an outdoor cooking space complete with a running-water sink, a kamado grill, and a gas grill, all set into a back bar. A front bar would house refrigeration for the built-in beer taps and pub seating for four to allow guests to enjoy the culinary displays. Situated directly outside a sliding door to the interior kitchen space, it was important for the pergola to create a waterproof barrier that made the space accessible even during the regular rain showers. With the rest of the back porch bathed in direct sun, the homeowners also wanted to create full-time shade for the outdoor kitchen space of this outdoor home addition. So, the design team opted to create an Azenco R-Shade fixed-roof pergola design for the space. The R-Shade’s insulated sandwich-panel roof design ensured the constant sun would be reflected away from the kitchen, while still providing sufficient airflow to ventilate the heat and smoke from the grills. To ensure the homeowners could transition from indoor to outdoor kitchen spaces without getting wet, the designers overlapped the frame of the pergola with the home’s eaves. With the pergola frame securely mounted to the building, its two support columns were perfectly positioned along the perimeter of the elevated porch. This ensured the R-Shade’s internal gutter system could collect both the rain falling on the pergola, and that running off the roofline, and easily deposit it in the abutting garden area.

Our clients had just adopted a baby girl and needed extra space with a full bath for friends and family to come visit (and help out). The garage had previously been converted into a guest room with a sauna and half bath. The washer and dryer where located inside of the closet in the guest room, which made it difficult to do laundry when guest where there. That whole side of the house needed to be converted to more functional living spaces. We removed the sauna and some garage storage to make way for the new bedroom and full bathroom area and living space. We were still able to kept enough room for two cars to park in the garage, which was important to the homeowners. The bathroom has a stand-up shower in it with a folding teak shower seat and teak drain. The green quartz slate and white gold glass mosaic accent tile that the homeowner chose is a nice contrast to the Apollo White floor tile. The homeowner wanted an updated transitional space, not too contemporary but not too traditional, so the Terrastone Star Light quartz countertops atop the Siteline cabinetry painted a soft green worked perfectly with what she envisioned. The homeowners have friends that use wheelchairs that will need to use this bathroom, so we kept that in mind when designing this space. This bathroom also serves as the pool bathroom, so needs to be accessible from the hallway, as well. The washer and dryer actually stayed where they were but a laundry room was built around them. The wall in the guest bedroom was angeled and a new closet was built, closing it off from the laundry room. The mud room/kid’s storage area was a must needed space for this homeowner. From backpacks to lunchboxes and coats, it was a constant mess. We added a bench with cabinets above, shelving with bins below, and hooks for all of their belongings. Optimum Penny wall covering was added a fun touch to the kid’s space. Now each child has their own space and mom and dad aren’t tripping over their backpacks in the hallway! Historical Renovation Objective: The homeowners asked us to join the project after partial demo and construction was in full swing. Their desire was to significantly enlarge and update the charming mid-century modern home to meet the needs of their joined families and frequent social gatherings. It was critical though that the expansion be seamless between old and new, where one feels as if the home “has always been this way”. Solution: We created spaces within rooms that allowed family to gather and socialize freely or allow for private conversations. As constant entertainers, the couple wanted easier access to their favorite wines than having to go to the basement cellar. A custom glass and stainless steel wine cellar was created where bottles seem to float in the space between the dining room and kitchen area. A nineteen foot long island dominates the great room as well as any social gathering where it is generally spread from end to end with food and surrounded by friends and family. Aside of the master suite, three oversized bedrooms each with a large en suite bath provide plenty of space for kids returning from college and frequent visits from friends and family. A neutral color palette was chosen throughout to bring warmth into the space but not fight with the clients’ collections of art, antique rugs and furnishings. Soaring ceiling, windows and huge sliding doors bring the naturalness of the large wooded lot inside while lots of natural wood and stone was used to further complement the outdoors and their love of nature. Outside, a large ground level fire-pit surrounded by comfortable chairs is another favorite gathering spot.

The owners wanted to transform their backyard into new indoor/outdoor spaces that would make the area more inviting and usable for family and friends. This was the missing piece in realizing the full enjoyment of their home. The new design accomplishes this, starting with a new sunroom, by enclosing the patio and covered walkway between the existing keeping room and garage. The result is a light, airy space with accordion doors and casement windows that encourage cross ventilation, natural lighting, and easy access to the outside. Truss vaulted ceilings and a plaster-finished fireplace put the finishing touches to the feel of the room. Limestone openings leading to the keeping room make the space part of the original house. A new side porch off the sunroom is positioned to frame a view to the courtyard and a pizza oven, drawing you into the new pool cabana. A space-defining transition occurs at the cabana where the flat, painted tongue and groove ceiling changes to a vaulted ceiling with exposed antique pine beams and rafters. Once in the pool cabana, the ceiling soars upward with antique pine beams supporting exposed rafters and roof decking. The outdoor kitchen beyond features a custom-made black iron barbeque pit among other appliances with two strapped stainless-steel hoods. In the evening, the pool cabana can take on various moods achieved by up and down lighting that is independently controlled along with a large fan creating a constant, cool soothing breeze. The other side opens up to the existing pool in a way that makes it more inviting. The secret to unifying this design with the house is the use of materials such as flagstone floors, washed brick, and antique pine exposed wood members throughout new and existing spaces.

Originally from Hawaii, my clients wanted to incorporate the warmth and color of the islands into their California ranch home. For Hawaiian colors, I used green quartz, glass tile and counters, iroko flooring, hemlock cabinets, and an unusual slate limestone. To create a lighter, more welcoming space I removed the wall between the dining room and kitchen and increased the entry wall length to create a better kitchen/dining/entry relationship. I added a wall between the family room and kitchen to house tall kitchen elements on one side and TV equipment on the other, as well as create a natural transition for the ceiling height changes. Blended textures of honed limestone countertops, slate, glass tile, large-format and mosaic porcelain tile, glass pebbles, granite tile, and ceramic tiles are earthy yet refined. Horizontal patterns create serenity.
