We created a wine cellar design that would satisfy the aesthetic and functional requirements of the homeowner om San Diego CA. We came up with a custom wine display , which showcases the client's collection beautifully/ On the left side, we incorporated horizontal bottle display racks. We also added glass shelves to display the decanter and mini car collection of the client. An existing wine cellar in a La Jolla, San Diego home was expanded to accommodate the growing collection of the owner. We worked on this project twice. The first installation was completed in 2008. After about 5 years, the client requested us to double the capacity of their wine room, but maintain the contemporary design. We added new sections to the existing racking to provide additional space for more wines. Stunning Wine Cellar for a Contemporary Home We completed a wine cellar installation project in La Jolla, an affluent city of San Diego, California, where we had to match the contemporary design of the home. The beautiful residential space was originally built with glass and wood. All the woodworking was constructed from Sapele Mahogany, which is common in many parts of the house. The cabinetry and furniture had to be the same tone and material. We have worked on this project twice. The first time was in 2008 and the second one was in 2013. We needed to expand and double the size of the custom wine cellar. A very integral part of this homeowner’s life is their wine and the collecting of wine. Our main goal was to create a racking design that consists of various orientations to allow the owner to store different sizes of bottles. Racking Features of the La Jolla Custom Wine Cellar The original room was constructed when the home was built. The architect, designing team, and contractor gave us a palette to match the existing cabinetry. The owners didn’t know what their needs were going to be. When they buy cases of wine, for example, they just put some of the bottles in the diamond bins and some in individual bottle spaces. In 2013, we tried to make the racking as universal as possible. The original capacity of the wine room was 1,100 bottles. It increased to 1,624 after the expansion of the space and adding more wine racks. Elevation 1 The first area of the room consists of racking for individual storage at the top section, with a VC-style cover for concealing the evaporator. There are diamond bins in the middle that can store nine bottles in each opening. We added many slots for large format bottles below the diamond bins because the owners stored bigger bottles in the first room, as big as 9 liters. What we did was to open up a couple of spaces to create a wider wine storage area. The whole racking in this area has a solid end panel. We took out the vertical supports and put the beam supports across to bear the load. We incorporated a coved tray feature to allow the owners to get a feel for the beautiful bottles in their collection. The large format bottles are stored in various heights, resulting in a cascading wine display. This style of racking allows for easy visibility of the wine labels. We installed LED lighting above this area to illuminate the space dramatically without emitting too much heat. Elevation 2 The next racking is labeled Elevation 2, which is the left wall that you will pass by before you go into the other storage area. It consists of horizontal display racks that can store both standard and larger bottles. These display racks, which are 8 ¼” deep, were installed with lighting and mirror at the back. The middle section has two glass shelves that provide an area for the client’s wine cellar accessories and mini car collection. Elevation 3 On the 3rd Elevation, the top racking includes slots with twelve coved trays and six solid backs. We added new individual column wine racks, and custom cabinets with scalloped neck supports to the existing cabinetry. Now, the total capacity of the individual bottle racking is 384, and the custom cabinets can accommodate 34 bottles. There is a double deep Sapele Mahogany tabletop where we installed very large steel supports under it. This will provide structural stability for bearing the weight of this big case storage area. The homeowner buys a lot of wine, so he wanted to have an area where he could stack all the boxes. He didn’t want the boxes to occupy the area at the front. With this feature, he could just bring the wines directly to this storage area, without affecting the aesthetic appeal of the front entrance of his La Jolla custom wine cellar. Elevations 4 and 5 The next wall is Elevation 4, which consists of wine racks for 98 magnum bottles. The top most section has a VC-style evaporator cover. Elevation 5 (in front of elevation 3), had twelve coved trays, 16-bottle custom cabinets with scalloped neck supports, and one hundred eighty individual storage slots. After adding new sections, we ended up having sixteen coved trays, 26-bottle custom cabinets, and 288 individual bottle racking. Rolling Ladder for Easy Access of Wines Another factor that we consider when designing a wine room is the convenience in accessing the bottles. Since the ceiling of this La Jolla custom wine cellar was tall (about 124” height), we added a hook rolling ladder. A hook ladder has fixtures that allow it to slide along the rail and can be lifted off the rail if you want to transfer it to another section of the racking on a different wall. This project is more than meets the eye! In a gorgeous neighborhood in Del Mar, San Diego, California, This unique small custom wine cellar truly acts as a showstopper. Originally within this house, the door which now faces outward used to be around the corner in a small hallway, virtually eliminating any visibility into this contemporary walk in custom wine cellar. Upon seeing the location of this space within the house, Gene Walder and the knowledgeable team at Vintage Cellars knew that to really take advantage of the room provided, (which is actually below the stairs), they needed to get rid of the original door and add a brand new one facing the main living space. Just a small feat in a series of unique custom features within this cellar! Here at Vintage Cellars, before any design takes shape, it is vital to understand what the clients wants and needs are based on their growing collection of wine. With a good idea of bottle sizes, shapes (some pinot noir bottles, for example have a wider bottom than a typical cabernet sauvignon bottle) and unique features desired, the team of wine cellar designers and wine cellar builders at Vintage Cellars are able to create a very special and desirable wine cellar for each client. The owners of this beautiful home collaborated heavily with the Vintage Cellars team in the design process of this rustic custom wine cellar - something that we aim to do with every project. The homeowners wanted to showcase some of their favorite Magnum sized bottles in a high reveal horizontal display row, directly on top of another area highlighting the best 750 ml's in their collection. This small custom wine room fills most of the left wall with single deep, individual bottle storage. Directly below this wine racking is room for wine case / wine bin storage. Centered within this wall is a nice space for opening and decanting wines with a gorgeous dark stone countertop and room for hanging wine glasses above. The opposite wall is filled floor to ceiling with label revealing horizontal display rows. Again, this type of feature is very desirable in recent years. Homeowners want to be able to showcase the best bottles they own within their custom wine cellars in the most stunning and beautiful ways possible. Additionally, this feature is commonly replicated with metal bars for a more contemporary and modern look and feel. Within Beach Cities such as Del Mar, La Jolla, Cardiff, Coronado, Rancho Santa Fe, Encinitas, Solana Beach, Newport Beach and Orange County alike, small walk wine cellars are all the rage. Custom Wine Closet s and Under the Stairs Custom Wine Room s are quickly becoming a commonplace feature within modern luxury homes. Funny enough, because San Diego has become such a hub and mecca for craft beer breweries, luxury homes within communities such as La Jolla, Del Mar, Encinitas, Coronado, Cardiff, Rancho Santa Fe, Solana Beach, Carlsbad, La Costa and Torrey Pines have taken notice and began including space for unique beer storage within their custom wine cellars as well. This right side wall horizontal display racking does just that. If you look closely, those intricately labeled bottles are craft brews kept at a chill and refreshing 55 Degrees- just waiting to be opened and enjoyed immediately. Just when you thought the custom wine cellar tour was over, another unique feature catches your eye. You see the back stone wall? Press ever so gently in the top left corner two thirds of the way up and - Voila! - a secret door appears and slowly reveals more room under the stairway for case storage and the like. The homeowner also decided to add interesting lighting to this cellar. This glamorous sitting room area is the perfect spot for intimate gatherings. It is a blend of the homeowner's furnishings - the four club chairs and the oriental rug - with a variety of new pieces. I spiced things up by introducing a deep leaf green color in the opulent faux silk roman shades, as well as in the custom designed throw pillows. This custom wine cellar was designed and built by Vintage Wine Cellars in 2020. We worked 100% remotely with this client to create a beautiful and functional space in unfinished redwood. This wine cellar's wine racking has many versatile features to store different sizes and styles of wines and wine bottles, such as tiered coved trays for large format wine bottles, high reveal display rows, individual bottle storage, Original Wooden Cases, and custom cabinetry. The unique shape and design of this room required a skilled contractor like Vintage Wine Cellars to design and create a completely custom wine cellar - perfectly fit to the shape and flow of the room. This client's room was actually huge - but he just didn't have the need to fill it completely with wine (maybe one day!) The front and rear walls are both fitted with custom racking, divided by open space and a large marble countertop. This room would lend itself perfectly to enjoying a nice bottle or three with some friends as there is plenty of space to walk around and mingle, as well as counter space begging to be used to decant those fantastic bottles. This incredible construction and engineering feat of a custom wine cellar involved the homeowner completely digging out the space by hand under the ground of their garage. The space was then excavated and re-covered and sealed to appear as if nothing had ever happened. Inside the house, A stone archway and corridor, covering a rustic and ornate staircase leads down into the underground custom wine cellar. The stairs also have a counterweight feature in which they completely lift vertically half way down the staircase to reveal another small storage space. Not for wine, but what a cool feature! Upon entering this large walk in wine cellar, stone archways welcome you into a dimly lit social space, surrounded by thousands of incredible bottles of burgundy, bordaux, napa vally cabernets and the like. Stone surrounds the custom designed wine racking arches. On the left side of the entrance, there is a gorgeous mosaic of wine grapes and leaves in a somewhat abstract fashion. The gorgeous marble countertop underneath with a Rogar wine bottle opener remains as a perfect place to open and decant wine to let breathe. The main room in the rustic wine cellar features individual and double bottle storage, stone and unfinished walnut archways, and high reveal display rows wrapping throughout. The stone walls, torch-like lighting fixtures and the stunning old world style chandelier creates a true feeling that this Huntington Beach / Newport Beach wine cellar is actually inside of an old castle. Upon turning the corner into the next wine storage space, you are greeted by walls of library style, floor to ceiling, double deep wine racking with a high reveal display row at waist level. The Modern feel and design of this wine room, heightened by a very clean, contemporary room feel itself, metal 'Contempo' wine racking, and straight lines throughout, is becoming more popular in chic homes throughout Los Angeles, Orange County, San Francisco, and San Diego Counties alike. Upon walking down the staircase into the modern wine cellar, a backlit horizontal display wall greets you with wines more suitable for drinking now. This space is not temperature and humidity controlled. Walk a few more feet down the staircase, however, and feast your eyes on this beautiful, contemporary showpiece wine cellar. The custom wine cellar design incorporates a mixture of wooden, metal, and glass features with backlit wine showcasing walls, roll out shelving, individual bottle storage, high reveal angled bottle display, wine case storage space, diamond bins, and even a cigar humidor. The sleek design of the metal wine racking enables the homeowner to match the contemporary house design with their newly installed wine cellar.
