We located this stunning Elm slab in a boutique mill in New England and selected it for the table we made for this Victorian home. We used a series of “butterfly keys” to stabilize the large cracks along the naturally occurring checks and cracks, in a nod to George Nakashima. The base is a Walnut slab with a partial raw edge. My client came to us with a request to make a contemporary meets warm and inviting 17 foot dining table using only 15 foot long, extra wide "Kingswood" boards from their 1700's attic floor. The bases are vintage cast iron circa 1900 Adam's Brothers - Providence, RI.

The client removed a Live Oak tree from his ranch about 12 years ago, and this slab sat outside near the edge of his shed. Over the years, minerals from the runoff caused portions of the wood to darken. What started as a perceived defect became a stunning focal point in this piece of reclaimed Live Oak. We also charred the raw edges of the piece to cause them to blacken in a process inspired by the Japanese technique called “shou sugi ban”.
