While the term “organic” means many different things to many different growers, Homefront Farmers follows a model of practices that promote the health and ecological biodiversity of your garden. We never use chemical fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides, or other synthetic applications. We think there’s comfort in knowing where and how your food is grown. Do you?

Potting mixes for container gardens need to drain freely, but still retain moisture. My base potting soil mix contains (clockwise from upper left) coarse builder's sand, high-quality organic compost or worm castings, coconut coir, and small lava rock. I supplement this with additional compost, fresh worm castings, and organic soil amendments, with the amounts varying depending on what I'm planting. Photo by Steve Masley

Inspiration for a huge farmhouse partial sun gravel vegetable garden landscape in New York for summer.

Located close to the entertaining area/outdoor kitchen, these Picklewood beds give a lot of texture to the small, side yard garden. Annuals, mixed in with the vegetables create a burst of color.

Many outdoor rooms interconnect around this entire “Family Compound,” a back house, and adjourning guest home. There is everything you need to entertain a giant family and to have friends over for a pool party. Some elements include a huge agave orchard with courtyards, an outdoor BBQ kitchen, a vegetable garden with fruit trees, a swimming pool, patios and levels. Raised vegetable garden adds beauty and productivity in an underutilized space on the side yard.

Antique granite cobbles with a mill wheel to mark the intersecting pathways create the floor of this vegetable garden. Recycled granite curbing pulled up from city streets was used in creating the steps seen in the background.

This steeply sloping mountain lot has fantastic southern exposure and with the help of these boulder walls, access to some narrow and linear, but productive vegetable garden beds. In this photo you can see the wildflower meadow below which helps to attract pollinators to the garden area and provides a transition to the taller trees below.

Spinach is easy to grow in shallow pots or window boxes, and you can harvest leaves as needed for sandwiches, salads, and soups. Photo by Steve Masley

A block of compressed, dried coir (coconut husk fiber). Coir soaks up 5 times its weight in water, and holds it in the potting mix for plants. Unlike peat moss, coir won't repel water if it dries out. An abundant byproduct of the coconut industry, it's more sustainable than peat. I still add some peat to potting mixes for acid-loving plants like blueberries, but use coir for all other uses. Photo by Steve Masley
