This project reimagines an under-used back yard in Portland, Oregon, creating an urban garden with an adjacent writer’s studio. Taking inspiration from Japanese precedents, we conceived of a paving scheme with planters, a cedar soaking tub, a fire pit, and a seven-foot-tall cedar fence. A maple tree forms the focal point and will grow to shade the yard. Board-formed concrete planters house conifers, maples and moss, appropriate to the Pacific Northwest climate.

.This solid Western Red Cedar hot tub was installed in a Colorado mountain setting, creating a natural outdoor soaking space designed for year-round use.
Unlike acrylic hot tubs, a cedar hot tub is built from natural materials that handle outdoor conditions exceptionally well. Western Red Cedar is naturally resistant to moisture and temperature changes, making it well suited for mountain climates with cold winters and warm summers.
Cedar hot tubs provide a quieter and more natural soaking experience without plastic shells, synthetic surfaces, or mass-produced components. The solid wood construction creates a warm and authentic feel that blends naturally into outdoor environments.
Handcrafted from premium Western Red Cedar, this tub is designed for long-term durability and can last 15–20+ years outdoors with straightforward maintenance.

An alternate view of the red copper flashing we used on the hip valleys of this Western red cedar shingle installation. For this expansive Killingworth residence, we specified certi-sawn perfection cedar shingles for their smooth, more uniform look. The shingles were treated with chromated copper arsenate (CCA) to serve as a preservative and organic pesticide. We ran full ice and water membrane as an underlayment and added a layer of cedar breather underlayment to provide airflow and drying under the shingles.
