We collaborated with our clients to design an extensive home renovation for their southeastern Ontario farmhouse, infusing it with a Modern Craftsman flair. Both the main and second levels will undergo complete transformations. The existing enclosed porch will be expanded both vertically and horizontally with a new second-storey addition and 28’x19’ bump-out across the back of the home. Large and abundant windows throughout will give the home a light and airy atmosphere.
On the main level, relocating the stairs will create an expansive open-concept living, dining, and kitchen space, perfect for entertaining family and friends. The living area will be anchored by a modern fireplace, complete with custom millwork filling the entire wall on both sides. Easy access to the backyard patio through triple sliding doors from the dining area will make indoor-outdoor living effortless. The kitchen will boast plentiful counter space, a sizable island seating four, and lots of storage in the walk-in pantry. A new private corner office offers two views of the picturesque rural property. The new front entry will feature a covered exterior and a spacious interior, warmly welcoming visitors.
Upstairs, the transformation continues with a luxurious primary suite featuring a cathedral ceiling and a partial wall to differentiate the sleeping and seating areas. Storage will not be an issue in the substantial walk-in closet. The ensuite cleverly offers a separate toilet room along with the 60” soaker tub, oversized shower, and two-sink vanity. Two additional bedrooms will have walk-in closets, one with an ensuite bathroom, and the fourth bedroom will have a wall of closet space. A main bathroom and linen closet will complete the second floor.
The exterior will combine pre-finished wood and stone, with simple wood accents at the entryways. Full ICF construction from the foundation to the top of the two-storey walls will ensure the home is highly energy-efficient.

A new-to-me realtor calls Tuesday mid-day asking about my services. The phone call quickly turned into a 'yes' but I mentioned unless I do this 'tomorrow', it couldn't get done until next week Tuesday or Wednesday due to other obligations.
It's in Cayucos, which poses another issue - do I make the trip up to preview (it's an hour away, do I have time), or can I get what I need off of the internet?
AND we had rain to contend with... it's never easy to stage in the rain.
Fortunately I'm a very spatially-minded person and could make my plans based on the existing internet photos. A girl needs her plans!
So Wednesday, between the spurts of rain, my sons and I spend all morning packing for this stage, and Wednesday afternoon / into evening my sons and I head out, unload, and stage this beautiful.... no..... GORGEOUS home ON THE WATER in Cayucos. WOW!!!
The boys told me upon arrival: 'We should buy this!' I'm thinking the same thing!
So, in retrospect, this stage was a vacant, sight-unseen home, and within about 24 hours went from realtor request to stage-done status.
Please forgive the darkness of the photos, it was 6:30 at night when we were done, it was dark!

COVID-19 did present some delays – making an easy renovation more challenging. But it also gave Colaneri a first-hand look at what the pandemic has done to the industry.
The project was scheduled to finish in February or March. But once COVID hit, it was an immediate stall. The custom cabinets were delayed, then everything else came to a dead stop. “It did give me the opportunity to really talk with my subcontractors to make sure they were comfortable coming in,” says Colaneri who completed the project in May.
It was all worth it though, and the memories they now have are priceless.
“I make breakfast every morning with my girls, who are ages 5 and 1,” says Colaneri. “It’s a nice way to start the day, and it’s a great connection. They get whatever they want, with Sesame Street playing in the background. These are the moments I’ll look back on and remember, especially when I’m not the ‘cool dad’ anymore.”
Colaneri will most likely never grow out of his “cool dad” label, at least when it comes to design.

Kowalske Kitchen & Bath was hired as the remodeling contractor for this first floor remodel in the countryside of Oconomowoc, WI. By opening the kitchen up to the living room, the layout is better for hosting family gatherings. The entire family can be together in the kitchen and living room – cooking or spending time together. Highlights of this country kitchen include a window seat, walk-in pantry and space for their treasured piano.
Project Goals
+ Restore the beauty of their family home, that was built by the homeowner’s grandfather
+ Cooking functionality for their family farm
+ Add a workstation sink for easy food prep
+ Pantry storage space for canned items & wine collection
+ Design that honors the mid-century ranch bones of the house her grandfather built and their own traditional style
Challenges & Issues
+ Needed space to highlight their piano, since the homeowner is an avid pianist
+ Old layout didn’t have good views of their outdoor space – the lake, gardens and chicken coop
+ Kitchen was too small and cut off from the rest of the home
+ The heat and air conditioning did not function well due to several past additions
Country Kitchen Features:
Cooking Kitchen – We created a larger kitchen by expanding into the old dining room. The homeowners needed more space for canning vegetables, cooking and entertaining.
Mid-Century Country Design – The ranch home was built in the 1950s so we kept the mid-century and country kitchen design aesthetic by using hickory wood, tall verticals and long horizontals.
Kitchen Window Seat – A custom window seat with a curved backrest creates a gathering spot in the kitchen. This connects the home to the outdoor view of the lake where the family fishes and ice skates in winter. The bench is large enough to be used as a guest bed when they have visitors. The cozy nook has shelving, art lights, and a hidden radiator underneath to keep it warm and toasty.
Window Backsplash – Along the range wall, a new window backsplash features the beautiful view of the farm driveway, trees and gardens.
Minimalistic Hood – The hood with the wood shelf mimics the new fireplace mantel and ties the country kitchen and living room together.
New Pantry – The old kitchen area was converted into the new pantry and a laundry room. The pantry is their working kitchen where they can store food, their wine collection, and have countertop space for small appliances. Butcher block countertops, colorful wallpaper and a new window make the pantry inviting. Adjustable shelves allow for flexible storage options. The pocket door can be closed when they have guests.
Recycled Ash Flooring in Kitchen – The homeowners chose an eco-friendly flooring for their country kitchen. The beautiful varied width wood planks are from recycled ash trees from Milwaukee parks.
Workstation Sink – This sink has sliding platforms that hold bowls, colanders and cutting boards to multiply the countertop by going deep instead of wide. The sink can be used to chop, rinse, prep, dry dishes, hold hot dishes and clean up after a meal more efficiently.
Country House Living Room:
New Tile Floor – To better conduct the heat, we replaced the old wood floors with porcelain tile. New radiators, insulation, ductwork, and enclosing the basement staircase improved the function of their HVAC.
Fireplace Makeover – To create a new focal point for the living room, we installed a new fire box, new mantle, and floor to ceiling stone. The goal was to draw the eye up to the vaulted beamed ceiling.
Open Concept Layout – The wall between the kitchen and living room was removed to connect the two spaces. We added new cabinetry along the wall with a tall bookcase. Since they didn’t use their formal dining room, a small dining table was added to the living room.
New Railing & Stairs – The staircase to the kitchen area was tricky because we needed to find a style that would make it feel airy. We did a glass enclosure with a simple metal railing and moved the staircase to the center of the room to allow room for the piano.

One of the biggest challenges in the apartment was its really long and linear layout, so the zoning of spaces became quite unnerving. We used furniture and art to help with that. The sectional couch was the anchor piece and almost created an invisible line to demarcate the living area. A large round coffee table was placed off of that so that circulation is a non issue, with a custom-made credenza (which doubles as a shoe rack and a tv unit) opposite it to balance the room. We painted it a glossy white so it disappears into the wall and doesn’t feel like it is encroaching into the thoroughfare. The rug is a Sham Ahuja hand-me-down, that had been marinating in flood water for a couple of months, but we managed to salvage it and it brings the right amount of colour into the room.

Large 5 car garage organized for many year-round functions. This garage supports entertainment with a rolling commercial refrigerator, spacious 24"D x 96"H enclosed pantry cabinets and rear overhead door that opens onto a patio. There are designated work areas for lawn management, gemstone polishing, multiple sports and shoe/boot storage. Material color is Summer Breeze with oil rubbed bronze hardware. Features include Maple butcher block work surfaces, stainless sink, integrated LED lighting, matching wood grain slat wall, 5 bike pulley hoists, custom electric 2 kayak lift, wet hardware drying basket. cabinets are suspended 6" above tan epoxy floor for easy cleaning.

Katherine Dashiell from Reico Kitchen and Bath in Annapolis, MD, worked with EWF Construction to design a transitional-style inspired kitchen. The kitchen features Masterpiece cabinets in the Martel door style with a Frost finish for the perimeter, and the Mesa door style in Quartersawn Oak with a Wicker finish for the island and tall cabinets.
The kitchen also includes quartz countertops and a backsplash, provided by others.
The client shared their experience, saying, “My new kitchen is both beautiful and functional. Katherine made sure everything was just right. I love how she addressed the HVAC issue with a space for my dog’s bowl, and made sure my coffee machine would fit perfectly. The pull-out drawer next to the stove for my knife block and utensil container is great. The design makes cooking and cleaning easy, and the colors are serene. Katherine took the time to visit the space to ensure we were on the right track. She really helped bring my vision to life.”

We all have to spend time doing laundry, so why not create an enjoyable space? This laundry room combines gorgeous cabinetry with thoughtful functionality.
Storage will never be an issue in this laundry room! The tall storage cabinet is large enough to accommodate a variety of essentials and the wall and base cabinets keep items right at hand. An integrated hanging rod and loads of counter space make laundry time easy.
The Wolf Saginaw door style was chosen for a traditional look, in keeping with the rest of the home. A rich Crimson stain gives the laundry room a warm, furniture feeling. The look is elevated with the lovely display area and crown molding. The grays and creams and touches of burgundy in the Cashmere White granite beautifully tie all the elements together. Sleek touches are added with the Moen Arbor faucet, and the versatile Amerock Revitalize pulls.

An old stone mansion built in 1924 had seen a number of renovations over the decades and the time had finally come to address a growing list of issues. All of the home’s bathrooms needed to be fully gutted and completely redone. In the master bathroom, we took this opportunity to rearrange the layout to incorporate a double vanity and relocate the toilet (the former bathroom had only a small single vanity with the toilet awkwardly located directly in front of the door). The bathtub was replaced with a generous walk-in shower complete with frameless glass and digital controls. We located a towel warmer immediately outside the shower to provide toasty towels within easy reach. A beautiful Calacatta and Bardigiglio Gray basketweave tile was used in combination with various sizes of Calacatta marble field tile and trim for a look that is both elegant and timeless.

As written in Northern Home & Cottage by Elizabeth Edwards
Sara and Paul Matthews call their head-turning home, located in a sweet neighborhood just up the hill from downtown Petoskey, “a very human story.” Indeed it is. Sara and her husband, Paul, have a special-needs son as well as an energetic middle-school daughter. This home has an answer for everyone. Located down the street from the school, it is ideally situated for their daughter and a self-contained apartment off the great room accommodates all their son’s needs while giving his caretakers privacy—and the family theirs. The Matthews began the building process by taking their thoughts and
needs to Stephanie Baldwin and her team at Edgewater Design Group. Beyond the above considerations, they wanted their new home to be low maintenance and to stand out architecturally, “But not so much that anyone would complain that it didn’t work in our neighborhood,” says Sara. “We
were thrilled that Edgewater listened to us and were able to give us a unique-looking house that is meeting all our needs.” Lombardy LLC built this handsome home with Paul working alongside the construction crew throughout the project. The low maintenance exterior is a cutting-edge blend of stacked stone, black corrugated steel, black framed windows and Douglas fir soffits—elements that add up to an organic contemporary look. The use of black steel, including interior beams and the staircase system, lend an industrial vibe that is courtesy of the Matthews’ friend Dan Mello of Trimet Industries in Traverse City. The couple first met Dan, a metal fabricator, a number of years ago, right around the time they found out that their then two-year-old son would never be able to walk. After the couple explained to Dan that they couldn’t find a solution for a child who wasn’t big enough for a wheelchair, he designed a comfortable, rolling chair that was just perfect. They still use it. The couple’s gratitude for the chair resulted in a trusting relationship with Dan, so it was natural for them to welcome his talents into their home-building process. A maple floor finished to bring out all of its color-tones envelops the room in warmth. Alder doors and trim and a Doug fir ceiling reflect that warmth. Clearstory windows and floor-to-ceiling window banks fill the space with light—and with views of the spacious grounds that will
become a canvas for Paul, a retired landscaper. The couple’s vibrant art pieces play off against modernist furniture and lighting that is due to an inspired collaboration between Sara and interior designer Kelly Paulsen. “She was absolutely instrumental to the project,” Sara says. “I went through
two designers before I finally found Kelly.” The open clean-lined kitchen, butler’s pantry outfitted with a beverage center and Miele coffee machine (that allows guests to wait on themselves when Sara is cooking), and an outdoor room that centers around a wood-burning fireplace, all make for easy,
fabulous entertaining. A den just off the great room houses the big-screen television and Sara’s loom—
making for relaxing evenings of weaving, game watching and togetherness. Tourgoers will leave understanding that this house is everything great design should be. Form following function—and solving very human issues with soul-soothing style.

Our client for this project envisioned a whimsical great room design that was conducive to hosting gatherings and her ongoing book club. She also desired a comfortable, classic sofa that could accommodate her friends’ knee and back issues (making it easy to sit and move?), while also incorporating her existing furniture in the refreshed design.
The careful selection of fabrics for the drapery was key to pulling the design together. The airy botanical print became the inspiration for the rest of the color scheme, starting with soft green painted walls. A woven jute rug added texture and set a casual mood. We then found the perfect sofa style to beautifully complement the space and accommodate her friends’ needs.
We created a welcoming, balanced ambiance by contrasting bold geometrically patterned pillows with organic drapery. A woven bench and versatile swivel chairs with polka dot upholstery rounded out the seating for guests. We also added round iron nesting cocktail tables to provide the ideal spot for snacks during her book group meetings.
A magnificent waterlily painting adorned the walls, adding to the garden-inspired ambiance.
To complete the vision, we placed her colorful inlaid table in the center of the room and surrounded it with trellis-backed rattan chairs, to create a charming small dining area.
Our client’s finished great room is now an oasis of tranquility and charm. She’s thrilled to have her new “happy place” – a beautiful, welcoming space to entertain her friends and family.
