The design creates two new terrace gardens that function as outdoor room additions to the home. One terrace serves as a community garden room while a second terrace serves as a secluded garden of reflection. The garden of reflection offers beautiful views of perennial plants and orchids, but its most prominent feature is a slow flowing glass and granite fountain. The fountain consist of three glass blown globes by Duncan McClelland delicately placed on top of a granite base. Water flows through the granite base creating the illusion that the globe are floating on perfectly still water. Integrated fiber-optic lighting illuminates each globe.

Inspiration for a timeless deck container garden remodel in San Francisco

This vacation home was created for an avid saltwater fisherman and his family. As a coastal property, care was taken to capture breezes and views, encouraging inhabitants to slow down and soak in the ambiance. At the same time, the building is designed to withstand storms and the corrosive effects of salt air. Awareness of natural elements, including being kind to other inhabitants of the property, is evident in selections like turtle friendly exterior specialty LED lighting. Careful compositions of color, material, opacity, and transparency create an exterior that is disciplined but playful. The building is layered in planes that accentuate shadow, forming a graceful backdrop to the palm trees, pool, and ocean beyond. The local coral stone used on the exterior is also seen inside, thus reinforcing a sense of place. Pops of saturated color balance the soothing palette of materials, art, and furnishings, never distracting from the breathtaking setting. High light from clerestories washes across interior surfaces and opens up views to the sky. The luminous volumes are easy-going and simple, but contain a few surprises. In the primary bath, the architect and client created a unique pattern of custom handmade tile.

This large side yard in the Lakeshore Historic District was redeveloped into a natural woodland clearing. Stormwater from the roof has been directed through a steel runnel into a native rain garden where it replenishes the cistern for a bubbling stone fountain. Weathered concrete slabs act as a thread from a firepit seating area, across the rain garden to the rear yard. The thick arched stone opening connecting from arcade to courtyard frames a view of the stone fountain, bell tower, and hill beyond. Terra-cotta flooring in the arcade. Brick pavers in the courtyard. We organized the casitas and main house of this hacienda around a colonnade-lined courtyard. Walking from the parking court through the exterior wood doors and stepping into the courtyard has the effect of slowing time. The hand carved stone fountain in the center is a replica of one in Mexico. Viewed from this site on Seco Creek near Utopia, the surrounding tree-covered hills turn a deep blue-green in the distance.
