To further enhance the connection with the outdoors, we replaced traditional French doors with a stunning LaCantina door. Turning our attention to the dated red brick that adorned the home’s facade, we applied a mortar overlay with creativity and skill. Michael Shannon DesignsOur client’s foremost design priority was to create a space that is both glamorous and highly functional—equally suited to everyday living and to serve as a true stage for entertainment. At the core of the project was the restoration of the loft’s authentic character, thoughtfully reimagined to complement a refined industrial-chic aesthetic. The apartment’s previous incarnation leaned toward traditional design, with wainscoting, dropped ceilings, crown moldings, and concealed structural elements. In contrast, the new vision embraces the building’s industrial roots. Ceilings were opened to reveal the original structure, steel columns were exposed, and historic brick walls were uncovered, reintroducing a sense of honesty and architectural depth to the space. From the outset, the project involved close collaboration with a lighting specialist to transform what had been notably dark interiors: a layered lighting strategy was implemented, combining concealed architectural illumination with focused overhead accents. In the kitchen, salvaged industrial “X-Ray Shade” mercury-glass fixtures—originally designed for maximum reflectivity—introduce both character and warmth. Artist Cimone Berman was commissioned to create a series of bespoke mirrors for the space to further enhance the play of light. Mom's Design BuildThe homeowners, having recently moved into their new home in the heart of St. Paul, were dissatisfied with the state of their backyard and sought to transform it into a private oasis. Our client cherished childhood memories of spending time with her family on a porch, so bringing that nostalgia to life for her own family was important to her.
To achieve this, the project included the construction of a beautiful 3 and 1/2 season porch addition, which the client preferred over their initial idea of a standard porch. This addition would allow for year-round enjoyment and relaxation.
The backyard redesign also featured new dining and lounging areas, a cozy fire pit for social gatherings, and a fixed walkway to the garage for added convenience. To enhance privacy, fences were added around the perimeter of the yard. Additionally, dedicated gardening areas were created to allow the client to cultivate their green space. An outdoor deck section specifically designed for a grill was incorporated, providing an ideal spot for outdoor cooking and entertaining. This comprehensive approach ensured enhanced privacy and created a serene retreat that seamlessly blends with the urban surroundings, providing the client with a tranquil escape right at home.
Fiorito Interior DesignThis gorgeous, nature-inspired Great Room—comprised of the kitchen, dining area, and sitting room—was reimagined for some wonderful repeat clients, beginning with a small, treasured piece of art.
Their large 1950s ranch house nestled into a gentle hill surrounded by orchards of fragrant orange, lemon, and cherry trees initially featured a too-small kitchen adjacent to a warren of small spaces with low ceilings serving as a dining and sitting area. They dreamed of a more spacious, light-filled layout.
A complete redesign of the home not only resolved spatial constraints but also embraced the beauty of the home’s natural surroundings. By removing walls and creating an open-plan layout, we enhanced the flow and connectivity between the kitchen, dining, and sitting areas, seamlessly integrating the outdoors with the indoors.
The relocated kitchen now faces the backyard, to facilitate outdoor entertaining and features a large island, serving as a welcoming focal point for both cooking and socializing. I designed a distinctive ceiling feature above the island, crafted from planks of the adjacent vaulted ceiling, mirroring the shape of the island below. This feature adds architectural interest and visually connects the flat kitchen plane with the vaulted plank ceiling of the sitting area, creating a harmonious sense of continuity and warmth.
A beautiful, prized painting of a bird on a branch created the direction for the color and texture palette. An intriguing yellow-green-tan background in the art guided my choices for the backsplash tile (an iridescent version mimics light glinting on water) and countertops. The kitchen's soothing color palette features various shades of natural green, while the dining area introduces feather-blue tones through chair upholstery and rug. Just steps away, the inviting sitting area features a rebuilt fireplace clad in cut, polished Haisa marble tiles in a vertical pattern. The soft, generous seating creates a comfortable spot for movie nights or cozying up by the fire on a cold winter evening. The elegant, simple silhouettes of the furniture enhance the serene and calming atmosphere of the space.
