Klopf Architecture, Arterra Landscape Architects, and Flegels Construction updated a classic Eichler open, indoor-outdoor home. Expanding on the original walls of glass and connection to nature that is common in mid-century modern homes. The completely openable walls allow the homeowners to truly open up the living space of the house, transforming it into an open air pavilion, extending the living area outdoors to the private side yards, and taking maximum advantage of indoor-outdoor living opportunities. Taking the concept of borrowed landscape from traditional Japanese architecture, the fountain, concrete bench wall, and natural landscaping bound the indoor-outdoor space. The Truly Open Eichler is a remodeled single-family house in Palo Alto. This 1,712 square foot, 3 bedroom, 2.5 bathroom is located in the heart of the Silicon Valley.

Visually, the project shines just as bright with white shaker-style cabinetry balanced by warm tones found elsewhere. Oversized warm gray porcelain wall tile partners beautifully with a diminutive square tile on the shower floor, while brushed nickel hardware and quartz countertops complete a timeless, classic appeal.

An expansive shower with a curbless transition replaces a large corner tub allowing our homeowner easier movement throughout the space. Grab bars add a safety net and are placed purposefully around the room.

This vibrant outdoor living space showcases how professional landscape architecture can transform a standard backyard into an athletic retreat. A custom-tiled basketball court serves as the focal point, featuring a high-tension shade sail—an essential building strategy for the intense North Texas sun. To ensure longevity against the region’s expansive clay soils, the court is installed over a reinforced sub-base. The perimeter is softened by native ornamental trees and white river rock, providing a clean, modern aesthetic that balances the high-energy sports zone.

Transforming this small bathroom into a wheelchair accessible retreat was no easy task. Incorporating unattractive grab bars and making them look seamless was the goal. A floating vanity / countertop allows for roll up accessibility and the live edge of the granite countertops make if feel luxurious. Double sinks for his and hers sides plus medicine cabinet storage helped for this minimal feel of neutrals and breathability. The barn door opens for wheelchair movement but can be closed for the perfect amount of privacy.

A major focus of the Hearth Residence renovation was creating dedicated storage solutions that support everyday family life. This custom mud hall combines a built-in bench, open shelving, concealed storage, and integrated hooks to keep daily essentials organized while reducing visual clutter.
Designed as part of the home’s broader interior architecture and space planning strategy, the space transforms a high-traffic transition zone into a functional and welcoming arrival experience. Warm wood millwork and natural light contribute to the calm, cohesive design language carried throughout the home.
