Kitchen Deep Dive: Designed for Flow In this Nokesville kitchen, every cabinetry decision began with space planning. We carefully evaluated workflow, sightlines, and proportion to create a layout that feels open — yet grounded. The perimeter cabinetry features Medallion Cabinetry in Maple with Potter’s Mill Reverse Raised Panel doors, finished in Sea Salt with a Graphite Dry Brush. The softer perimeter tone keeps the room feeling light and expansive while allowing architectural details to stand out subtly. To anchor the space, we designed the island and hood in Knotty Alder, using the same door style but finished in Dockside stain. The warmth and texture of the wood create contrast and depth — drawing the eye inward and establishing the island as a natural gathering point. Maintaining consistent door styling throughout ensures visual cohesion, while the material and finish contrast introduces dimension without disrupting flow. Thoughtful proportion. Designed and built by Geshtalt Homes, this luxury Colleyville, Texas renovation reimagines the heart of the home through a sophisticated open-concept great room that seamlessly connects the kitchen and family living areas. The design embraces warmth, craftsmanship, and timeless elegance, creating a space that is equally suited for everyday living and entertaining. At the center of the kitchen, a substantial island with waterfall-edge quartzite countertops serves as both a visual focal point and a functional gathering space. Rich, dark-stained custom cabinetry establishes a sense of depth and refinement, while select cabinet elevations feature decorative custom grilles backed with French antique mirror, introducing texture, character, and subtle reflection throughout the room. Beneath the cabinetry, dark hand-scraped wood flooring grounds the space and complements the home's sophisticated palette. The adjoining family room is anchored by a dramatic linear fireplace framed with a floor-to-ceiling stone surround, creating a striking architectural feature that draws the eye upward and reinforces the room's scale. Custom built-in wine storage on either side of the fireplace adds both function and visual balance while enhancing the home's entertainment-focused design. The "blue hour" is that magical time of day when sunlight scatters and the sky becomes a deep shade of blue. For this Mediterranean-style Sea Cliff home from the 1920s, we took our design inspiration from the twilight period that inspired artists and photographers. The living room features moody blues and neutral shades on the main floor. We selected contemporary furnishings and modern art for this active family of five. Upstairs are the bedrooms and a home office, while downstairs, a media room, and wine cellar provide a place for adults and young children to relax and play.

Our design for an apartment located in the West End-Collegiate Historic District Extension in Manhattan addressed a number of challenges to unleash the potential of this 2.500-square-foot space in an elegant pre-war building. When purchased by our client, the property was in estate condition and needed extensive work, requiring demolition and a complete makeover of the living spaces, as well as the addition of contemporary climate control. Among the spatial and design challenges, the primary bathroom was exposed to the entry foyer of the apartment, and the dining room and kitchen were each closed-in and lacking light. The dining room’s promise as a bright, convivial space was fulfilled by adding double pocket doors opening to the living room, kitchen and foyer, establishing a seamless flow through the entertaining spaces while bringing in much-needed light. We designed a chic and modern solution for the primary bedroom’s lack of privacy, creating a walk-in closet that serves as a transitional vestibule in the bedroom, adding both visual intrigue and additional storage space while shielding the viewscape from the apartment entrance through the foyer to the bedroom. To add a three-zone central air conditioning system, we took advantage of the kitchen facing an interior courtyard, placing the air conditioning condensers here, which also satisfied landmark property restrictions. The climate control system was accomplished without lowering ceiling heights. Finally, we worked with the client to choose classic finishes and fixtures that reflect and enhance the historic nature of the property, and are also contemporary and timeless. These include unlacquered brass hardware, herringbone oak flooring with a stencil border, black-and-white bathrooms, and paneling, trim, and moldings that are simple and elegant. POP Architecture was the architect for the project, and Godwin Construction was the general contractor.

Layout and Scope of Work We ingeniously reimagined the original layout of the house to meet the homeowner's specific requirements. This extensive scope of work includes structural modifications, additions, and optimization of existing spaces to maximize functionality and establish a seamless flow within the home. We created significant and life-changing additional space without the extra time or expense of having to go through a minor variance with the city. The kitchen was the main focus of the renovation and included a significant floorplan reconfiguration. The larger kitchen now boasts a spacious island, complete with a bar sink, microwave drawer, wine fridge, and high-end appliances. The addition of a quartz Caesarstone rugged concrete countertop and a striking rebel-tiled fireplace in the living room further accentuates the contemporary design on the main floor. The primary suite, encompassing a bedroom, a wet-style ensuite with heated floors, and a dressing room, showcases an open-concept layout. Upstairs, we expanded the family's living options and offered private places by adding a fourth upstairs bedroom and private home office.

The renovations at Horseshoe Hill transformed a disjointed property into an alluring farmhouse with strong connections to the landscape and a fresh aesthetic to complement the owner’s South African furnishings. A new main gable establishes a strong central focus for the massing, and an entry wing addition welcomes visitors with a charming porch and inviting foyer. New south-facing covered porches create comfortable outdoor living areas, connect major rooms to the outdoors, and provide shade and filtered light for interior spaces. The home’s updated floor plan distills an existing warren of disconnected, small chambers into spacious, open rooms that infuse the house with a modern flow and engage the new pool.

Cove House is a contemporary shoreline sanctuary in the lake region of New Hampshire. The wooded property, which includes several accessory outbuildings and an existing guest cottage, makes up a private micro-cove. The new modern house and existing traditional cottage turn both toward the lake and to each other. Thoughtful siting and landscape architecture establish a connective flow between the two residences, with a notched stone courtyard in the house inviting visitors to go back and forth. Inspired by the craftsmanship of an antique mahogany powerboat, Cove House pursues architectural quality and beauty at the highest level. The design uses materiality, texture, and daylight to balance livability and artistry. The main entrance leads through a slot-canyon-like hall where a sequence of monumental granite walls reveals a glorious, light-filled living room. A steel moment frame spanning two levels imparts unobstructed panoramic views of the lake. The magnetism of the New Hampshire waterfront is equalized by a coordinated series of openings, which attune daylight throughout the interior. Large sliding glass doors and windows draw light through the courtyard and into the home’s core – a bright and lofty kitchen. Below the kitchen, a walkout patio illuminates a refined wine-tasting room­­. Near the front entry, a gracious granite and steel stair delivers daylight to each level though open risers and glass balustrades. Located in the prestigious Witherspoon development in Brentwood, TN, lies a stunning home that underwent a remarkable transformation under the skilled hands of the Henck Design team. We project-managed this redesign and used our locally referred tradesmen and movers for a full service interior design experience for a family relocating from Chicago. The clients wanted to infuse their new luxury home with a more casual and comfortable aesthetic that aligned with their personal style. At HD, we are known for creating inviting, neutral spaces that provide all the comforts of home. We wanted to establish a conveniently functional space for the family with a relaxed feel. This casual look was a distinct departure from the traditional elements present in the house upon arrival.

Every design decision for this Caribbean beach residence was guided by the desire to maximize the views of the property’s breathtaking natural surroundings. To connect the spaces and reveal the views from every vantage point, the team reconfigured the layout to create vistas, and installed window film to reduce solar heat gain. These modifications increased efficiencies, reused 90% of the interior envelope and did not impact the exterior structure of the building. In addition to providing incredible views, opening up the plan allows cross ventilation, maximizing the use of ocean breezes to cool the interior. The result is an effortless flow and maximization of space. Throughout the interior, dark materials express the concept of respite in the shade, and emphasize the sweeping views of the Caribbean Sea. Millwork crafted by local artisans from local materials establishes hierarchy – providing a clear understanding of the layout – and filters light to create privacy and drama. Screens help define the spaces and create suspense. Varying screen opacities serve specific functions: nearly opaque screens build suspense, translucent screens provide privacy, and reflective screens – as seen in the kitchen ceiling – create mystery in the core where light and views are challenged. Referencing the seaside location, the baseboards create a sense of being in a deep shallow. The 16” tall baseboards create a pool effect, engaging the walls with Cradle to Cradle certified Mosa tile flooring. The irregular height also conceals power and data cabling.
