The house, for a four-member family, is built on a sloping plot with in a terraced alignment type of layout system. The desire to achieve the greatest possible contact with the ground, is a determining factor for the organization of the levels of the building. The building is defined by a 10mx10mx6,50m two storey space. This is the “box” in which the common spaces of the house are located and acts as the outer shell.Smaller, independent volumes penetrate this shell and define the private spaces of the users. The building follows the principles of bioclimatic design: a cooling and shading strategy, natural ventilation and an appropriate heating strategy combined with solar gains. Also adequate natural light is provided according to the use of the space. Exposed concrete is used for the construction of the external shell, whereas red cedar wood and rusted steel are the materials that cover the external surfaces of the private “boxes”.

Along with internal tiled floors at residential and commercial properties, we also specialise in the cleaning, restoration and sealing of all types of external tiled floors, including patios.
This customer, who lives in the small town of Brackley in Northamptonshire, had made the unfortunate mistake of sealing a brand new Slate tiled patio without removing the layer of grout haze smeared across the surface of the tile first. With the grout trapped between the tile and the new sealant the sealer was unable to fulfil its potential and the entire floor appeared really dull and patchy. The customer contacted me about setting the situation right.
My initial course of action was to remove the new sealer using Tile Doctor Remove & Go, which is specially designed to strip away sealant, as well as adhesives and paints in cases where building and decorating works have left the tiles stained. The product was applied liberally across the surface area of the patio and agitated using a rotary machine fitted with a special stripping pad. Of course, this was necessary because the grout haze could not be treated without removing the sealant first. The soiled cleaning solution was promptly soaked up using a wet-vac machine.
Once the tiles were exposed I applied Tile Doctor Acid Gel, which is a blend of phosphoric and hydrochloric acids in more manageable gel form, all over the patio and allowed it to dwell for ten minutes to begin neutralising the grout haze. I then added a little water and worked the product into the patio with a stiff scrubbing brush and a rotary machine to ensure all grout haze was removed from the surface of the tiles. The remaining slurry was then removed using the wet vacuum, and I rinsed the area twice with plain water to ensure all cleaning products had been removed. It was them left to dry completely.
I returned to the property several days later to give the patio a fresh seal now that it was free from grout haze. First, I gave the patio a vacuum and light mop to remove any dust and debris. The customer wanted the tiles as dark as possible, therefore I suggested we use Tile Doctor Stone Oil before sealing, as this would darken the Slate significantly.
Once this was agreed, I applied one coat of Stone Oil, allowed an hour for the product to dry, and then followed this applying two coats of Tile Doctor Colour Grow sealer. This is our impregnating, colour enhancing sealant which provides maximum protection against ingrained dirt and stains, as well as a durable no-sheen finish.
As you can see from the photographs, the Slate tiles experienced an impressive transformation. The fresh sealant, combined with the Stone Oil, really took the appearance of the tiles to a new level and, what’s more, it will be easier for the happy customer to keep it clean in the future.

After long waiting, Expo Milan 2015 has finally opened its doors! Among more than 140 pavilions to describe the world, UAE pavilions , an imposing structure , including a theater and the Emir apartment was created . The pavilion, which stands for modernity, is one of the larger lots of Expo Milano 2015, and benefits from a privileged location, right in the center of the exhibition, alongside the main axis Decumanus. The FOSTER+PARTNERS architectural office , who designed it, was able to reflect the country's cultural heritage and in particular its focus on sustainable development. The amazing shape is shaped by a series of rippled walls, with a height over 12 meters, evoking both the shaded streets of country’s historic settlements , and the magnificent sand dunes of its deserts. There is also a charming green space dedicated to the native vegetation. At the end of the World Fair The lot will be dismantled and reassembled in Masdar City.
THE CONTRIBUTION OF GRASSI PIETRE
Grassi Pietre also participated in the creation of this wonderful project by FOSTER+PARTNERS. In particular (on behalf of Tecton, Reggio Emilia - Italy) the company from Nanto (Vicenza - Italy) provided 500 square meters of flooring in Trani Biancone - slabs 120x70x2 cm in honed finish - used for the Emir apartment (located inside the pavilion) and the lower level flooring adjacent to the auditorium.
The Grassi Pietre marble was also used to clad the interior stairs leading to the apartment: Grassi Pietre provided the Trani Biancone for the shaped stairs, 3 cm thick honed surface.
Moreover, Grassi Pietre also supplied 40 square meters of floor in marble Trani Biancone, in sandblasted finish (4 cm thick), for the outside terraces. The external staircase was built instead in Trani Bronzetto. All the outside surface have a non slippery bushhammered surface.
TRANI BIANCONE And BRONZETTO
Trani is a marble that moves between shades of beige (Bronzetto ), ivory (Biancone ) and rosé. The nuance changes depending on the variety. It is characterized by the many thin and sinuous veins.

Here’s a really interesting commercial job for you, which I recently completed in the town of Hinckley, Leicestershire. I was asked to take a look at a Victorian Geometric and Encaustic tiled floor in the historic Queen’s Head pub.
This floor is over a century old and although in good condition for its age had suffered significant wear over the years, along with some cracked tiles and slight inherent moisture issues. What the pub landlord requested was a restorative clean to alleviate the aesthetically damaging effect of the wear, and to enhance the natural colours of the stone. I was also asked to seal the floor following the clean to achieve a semi-gloss finish.
The first step in the cleaning process was to mix a strong solution of one part Tile Doctor Pro-Clean to four parts clean water. Pro-Clean is a high alkaline cleaner which also contains stripping properties, allowing it to break down old sealer and tackle heavy soil build-up. The solution was applied to the floor and left to dwell for 15 minutes, giving it times to seep into the stone, get underneath the dirt and lift it to the surface.
I addressed several paint spots and areas suffering from glue contamination by using Tile Doctor Remove & Go, which is specially formulated to break down paint and adhesives on unpolished natural stone floors, amongst others. The entire floor was then scrubbed using a special floor cleaning pad, and the resulting slurry was vacuumed away using a wet-vac machine.
The final issue to deal with was the inherent efflorescence staining. This was treated using Tile Doctor Grout Clean-Up, an acid-based product which removes not just efflorescence but also grout haze, mineral deposits, and rust stains. The solution here was one part Grout Clean-Up diluted with four parts water.
After completing the clean, I thoroughly rinsed the floor with clean water to remove any trace of cleaning product and dried the floor as much as possible with a wet vacuum, then before leaving for the day i installed a couple of air movers to assist with drying overnight.
Upon my return the following day, I checked the floor for any excess moisture before sealing it with our topical, semi-gloss finish sealer, known as Seal & Go Extra which due to its formula is ideal for external or old internal floors where there is unlikely to be damp from membrane.
This unique product provides excellent protection, and allows the tiles to breath where floors are suffering from inherent moisture issues. It is suitable for both internal and external use, on Victorian floor tiles, Sandstone, Flagstones, Terracotta, and rough Slate.
As you can see from the photo, I was able to fulfil my client’s request to a high standard, bringing the pub’s old yet characterful Victorian tiled floor back to life again.

Recently I was called to a house in the very small town of Marton in Warwickshire which is known for its proximity to the medieval “Marton Bridge”, which lies just to the north, crossing the River Leam.
The entire downstairs flooring of my client’s house consisted of Quarry tiles apart from one room where the tiles had been covered by screed and then linoleum. Quarry tiles are a classic hard wearing tile used for both internal and external commercial and residential flooring due to its ability to withstand heavy usage. Reception areas, outdoor patios and porches, for example, are commonly tiled using Quarry.
My client wanted to restore the covered floor back to its original state so that it would match the rest of the downstairs. Realising that this would be a complex and physically demanding task, my client decided to call in Tile Doctor to carry out the restoration.
Removing the Linoleum covering was a relatively straightforward process, so I was able to do this relatively quickly. The main issue concerned removing the screed, which is far more difficult to remove, requiring a lot of physical scraping. Thus I opted to call in some extra manpower in the form of the Nottinghamshire Tile Doctor, Steve Carpenter. With the two of us armed with scrapers we set about removing the screed, taking extra care not to damage the Quarry tile underneath.
Once Steve and I had scraped off as much of the screed as physically possible, I applied a strong dilution of Tile Doctor Remove & Go, a stripper with cleaning properties that is particularly effective at breaking down coatings such as adhesives, plasters and sealers. The product was left to dwell for ten minutes before I worked it into the stone with a scrubbing pad.
After cleaning the tiles, I noticed a layer of grout haze on the surface of the exposed Quarry tiles, so I applied Tile Doctor Grout Clean-Up to remove it. Once the cleaning process was complete I gave the floor a thorough rinse with clean water, before soaking up the resulting residue with a wet-vac machine. The first day of work was a gruelling 12 hours long, but I was very pleased with the results and left the floor to dry overnight.
On day two I returned to finish the job by sealing the newly uncovered Quarry tiles, but not before using a damp meter to check that they were completely dry. Any excess moisture left on unsealed tiles can potentially effect the performance of any sealers that are applied. I sealed the tiles using Tile Doctor Colour Grow, an impregnating, colour-enhancing sealer which gave the surface an aesthetically pleasing shine, as well as durable protection against dirt and wear for the future.
After two long days of work the job was done and the transformation was fantastic and highly rewarding to see, the house now has a fantastic looking Quarry tiled floor running throughout the entirety of the lower level.

Situated within London’s historic Hampstead Village, Cascade House spans four floors of a Grade II listed building and incorporates a new two-bedroom dwelling. Kährs’ design was chosen by PATALAB Architecture to complement the interior’s purist black and white pallet – and the stunning project has received the FX International Design Award, and Surface Design Award 2015. All flooring was installed by main contractor, ParryPage Projects Ltd.
The external appearance of Cascade House blends into its historic setting, whilst the interior provides a series of bright and contemporary spaces, flooded by natural light. A triple height staircase, with a ‘cascade’ of black-stained treads, provides a central focus and gives the dwelling its new name. Kährs Oak Nouveau Charcoal was chosen to complement the bespoke timber joinery and panelling, which contrast with white ceilings, walls and furniture. The one-strip wood floor is crafted in Sweden from rustic, sustainable oak; design features include a high performance engineered construction, a durable charcoal-grey matt lacquer and a brushed and bevelled surface finish.
"We aimed for a simple, monochrome colour palette that contrasts the complex geometries of the existing Grade II listed building. We chose Kährs' Oak Nouveau Charcoal wood floor design - to be laid throughout the entire apartment - due to its elegant appearance, proven durability and long lasting performance,” commented Uwe Schmidt-Hess, Founder of PATALAB Architecture
