This is a rear yard landscape in Old Town, Chicago. The major defining element that we designed and build was the Ipe deck. The design and installation of the deck allowed for functional use and unobstructed views out to the landscape. The deck is blind fastened and the railings are stainless steel cable with ipe caps. The fence is completely rebuilt using cedar.. There is a decorative screen next to the planter boxes, which helps to bring down the scale of the neighboring house. The patio is travertine laid in a random pattern, and continues underneath the elevated deck. We added a mexican pebble bed on the edge of the patio which will help show a future sculpture/art piece. A stone walkway at the edge of the patio leads under the canopy of the upright trees, to access to the doorway that is underneath the deck. The landscape consists of two types of ground cover. The inner circle is a lower, purple-leafed, ajuga, and the outer edge is pachysandra. The fence and deck posts have climbing hydrangea planted underneath which will eventually grow to cover the vertical elements.

Detail shot: Client was going for a rustic/medeival look, which we achieved by lightly sanding the rough-sawn texture, torching knots/imprefections to highlight and contrast, and applying two coats of stain/sealer. Client opted for exterior mount (non-operable) shutters, which are secured to the brick with masonry fasteners at the corners, and countersunk below the face of the shutter. Cedar plugs (visible in upper right corner) are then glued in place over the fastener head, and chiseled/sanded smooth before touch-up stain is applied.

This rooftop deck was designed to create a modern, tranquil oasis for the client in the midst of Chicago’s bustling River West neighborhood. We used clear cedar, which is planks of cedar that do not feature any visible knots in the wood, and blind fasteners to hide all of the screws and hardware, to create a smooth, sophisticated look. We added planters and two Zen rock gardens to evoke a sense of calm. Outdoor lighting helps make this rooftop deck a perfect place to entertain well into the evening.

I replaced the pressure treated flooring with Trex 5/4" x 6" composite flooring. I fastened it with Trex brand hidden fastners. I capped off the ends of the boards with a narrow piece of flooring. This hides the unfinished ends that you have with all composites. I also replaced the old pressure treated post caps, with premade 4' x 4" pyramid copper caps.

This compact 12x12 low-elevation deck features Trex Enhance® Naturals composite decking in Toasted Sand with hidden fasteners and color-matched screws in a straight lay pattern. Trex Select black aluminum railing with raised posts and flat caps surrounds the space, complemented by matching Toasted Sand composite fascia and a short 3-tread stair.

Metal roofs are becoming more available and affordable for residential installations, but they are not all created equal. Our standing seam sheet-metal roofing system is assembled using a hidden fastener clip system installation method, which allows for an expansion and contraction of the roofing panels with the temperature fluctuation but more importantly, there are no exposed fasteners that can eventually fail. This results in increased longevity of the installation of the roofing system. For this project we fabricated our panels on-site and to exact dimensions. This method reduces excessive waste of material and allows for adjustments to achieve a high-end custom look and will retain the aesthetic appeal of your home well into the future.
