Inspiration for a mid-century modern built-in desk carpeted study room remodel in San Francisco with white walls and no fireplace
Inspiration for a mid-century modern built-in desk carpeted study room remodel in San Francisco with white walls and no fireplace

This project won in the 2013 Builders Association of Metropolitan Pittsburgh Housing Excellence Award for Best Urban Renewal Renovation Project. The glass bowl was made in the glass studio owned by the owner which is adjacent to the residence. The mirror is a repurposed window. The door is repurposed from a boarding house.

This great room (figuratively and literally) was being used as a casual dining and seating area. The original kitchen was a cramped 10' x 12' dark corner with three doorways and a staircase interrupting the flow. When I first walked into this space, I couldn't imagine rebuilding the kitchen anywhere but here!

Our designer has achieved a stylish look by combining dark cabinets and light-colored marbles.

this master suite renovation represents the completion of a whole house remodel initiated several years ago. the space had been intended as a master suite but left incomplete for budgetary reasons. the pending arrival of the family’s second child prompted the move to complete. Schwartz and Architecture’s master plan had organized a strong spatial arrangement, packed with program. building Lab, along with the client, developed all of the materials and detailing. we also, of course, built it.
bL picked up on prominent themes from the earlier project, developed and re-worked them with materials specific to the context. from a geometric standpoint, cleanness, simplicity and continuity drove decisions. headers were eliminated from doors allowing continuous ceiling planes interrupted only by slots for sliding doors. flush detailing of tile and sheetrock and sliding glass doors that converge to form an inside corner are but a couple examples of many challenging details dedicated to precise alignments and reveals. from a material standpoint the wood provides tactile softness, frosted glass and lighting maximize depth, while tile and Caesarstone maintain solidity and groundedness. details such as the Caesarstone wrap of the vanity and medicine cabinets offer surprise and engagement through unlikely material application.
projects of such density and richness in materials and detail are somewhat rare. we are grateful to our clients for the opportunity and challenge.

Inspiration for a rustic brown one-story wood gable roof remodel in Seattle

From it’s initial inception pre-pandemic, to it’s final completion this year, our small backyard house has been known by many names: The He Shed/She Shed, Garagemahal, and most recently The Red Pony. It all began in early 2019 with a trip to Goodwood in the heart of West Sussex England. The home we and rented overlooked the beautiful South Downs National Park.
As we came to love about Europe, the house had a set of doors that opened on the corner onto a deck where we were able to enjoy the most beautiful sunsets without interruption. Having no corner post was so fantastic that when we began our own project for a garage/art studio, we knew we had to figure out a way to engineer it into our plans.
It was well worth the long wait (pandemic related), but come late winter of 2021 our installer showed up and fitted the door in just 2 days. A true craftsman! From beginning to end Nanawall was 5-star! The doors have been trouble free ever since, from 2 foot snowdrifts to driving rains, not a drop of water inside. Read full story.
"Today, a year later, we are loving the indoor/outdoor nature of the space with the doors wide open — even if we’re not looking out over the moors in the UK. Even our backyard feels more beautiful!" - Homeowners

This contemporary wall hung vanity was custom made for the project from walnut veneers and solids. It features beveled edge door and drawer fronts, with no hardware to interrupt the clean lines and beautiful walnut grain.
The vanity mirror is attached to a walnut veneer panel to match the wall hung vanity. Dual sconces by Ginger flank the mirror.

CLIENT GOALS
True to San Francisco’s history of incubating trailblazers and entrepreneurs, this 1900 Pacific Heights home served as headquarters to some of the country’s most notable figures. Like many San Francisco homes, it has evolved to serve many families, including the original spice trading builders to an Academy Award-winning film director/producer/screenwriter and a revered fashion designer. Our client’s primary goal was to re-envision a one-of-a-kind room with a view, within this iconic and historic Victorian home, into a luxury spa.
DESIGN SOLUTION
Our client turned to Centoni for our deep knowledge of historic properties and our vast understanding of residential design and engineering to convert this spectacular home’s 12-foot diameter 4th-floor turret into a lux steam shower and spa. Structural steel was engineered to create an uninterrupted opening to the turret from the main bathroom. Sophisticated waterproofing, ventilation, and heating solutions were also engineered to ensure the view was not interrupted, no matter how much steam was generated.
For design inspiration, we borrowed the opulent experience of ancient Roman bathing complexes to create a truly luxurious environment. Hand-cut mosaic tile from Italy and brilliant white Thassos marble add a refined and formal touch to the space, while dark cabinetry provides a contemporary touch. The hand-hammered steel sink basins replicate ancient singing bowls’ calm and meditative experience.
At the same time, dimmable lights allow the rare opportunity to shower by the City’s light. On the shower floor, a compass rose pointing true north with 24-karat French fleur-de-lys tiles symbolizes the importance of following the right path and our client’s desire for meditative balance. The space is both unique and meaningful. Centoni created the ideal retreat for anyone who longs for a calm, quiet bathing experience with stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge, the Palace of Fine Art, Alcatraz, the Presidio, and beyond.

Created by combining two units, this 3,000+ square foot condominium residence offered expansive proportions and spectacular city views. While the builder's finishes were state-of-the-art when the building opened in 2009, they had not aged well. The original cherry floors had faded unevenly, the kitchen felt undersized in relation to the apartment, and a dark, enclosed library/den was disconnected from the main living spaces. We reconfigured the floor plan to better suit the scale of the residence and the way the owners live. The former laundry room was relocated, and its space was incorporated into an enlarged kitchen, allowing for two full-size refrigeration units, a walk-in pantry, additional counter space, and a generous island. The enclosed den was opened to the main living area and transformed into a spacious dining room, improving circulation and creating greater openness. Light-toned flooring replaced the original cherry and takes its cue from the new kitchen cabinetry, creating a lighter, brighter, and more cohesive interior. Matching custom cabinetry extends into the main living room, providing integrated storage and space for media components while visually connecting the rooms. In the primary bedroom, a smaller-scale interpretation of the living room millwork, this time in warmer walnut, creates a cozy nook with an integrated television, storage, and shelving designed to display the owners’ collections. The residence is flooded with natural light during the day, but the views become equally dramatic after sunset, when the illuminated figure of William Penn atop City Hall becomes an unexpected decorative feature just outside the windows. To make the interiors equally successful at night, we added decorative lighting and repositioned the architectural lighting throughout, using it to highlight the new cabinetry, the owners’ artwork, and seating areas while creating a warmer atmosphere after dark. Decorative metal screens were introduced in several locations to subtly define individual spaces without sacrificing the openness of the reconfigured plan or interrupting views through the apartment. The result is a sophisticated, highly functional home—distinctive in its own right, framed by remarkable views of Philadelphia.
