Secret Gardens has been developing this stunning harbourside garden over a number of years. A simple layout at water level provides a subtle foreground to the harbour view beyond. Simple, modern plant combinations draw from a simple but consistent colour palette. The main courtyard space is the highlight . A five metre high green wall and water wall provide the backdrop to a large banquet seat. The built in bbq, retractable ceiling, customised firepit and coffee table provide options for year round entertainment. Extensive soundproofing was incorporated into the boundary wall as well as behind the green wall to absorb noise from a neighbouring property.

The couple's youngest son, Major, is the only Novogratz with his own room. Although he is only five years old, the couple resists going the traditional route of theme decorating. Instead, pieces are thoughtfully considered to give the kids an environment that they can respond to now, but grow with into the future. Here, a portrait of Major by photographer Catherine Hall imbues the space with a sense of ownership. On the site of a ruined 1850's farmhouse, the Architect honored the Client's request for a wood clapboard home, to serve as a venue for corporate entertaining, while providing privacy and comfort for a family of five. 150 year old Norfolk Pines were preserved to shield the home from the street.

The owners of this property had been away from the Bay Area for many years, and looked forward to returning to an elegant mid-century modern house. The one they bought was anything but that. Faced with a “remuddled” kitchen from one decade, a haphazard bedroom / family room addition from another, and an otherwise disjointed and generally run-down mid-century modern house, the owners asked Klopf Architecture and Envision Landscape Studio to re-imagine this house and property as a unified, flowing, sophisticated, warm, modern indoor / outdoor living space for a family of five. Opening up the spaces internally and from inside to out was the first order of business. The formerly disjointed eat-in kitchen with 7 foot high ceilings were opened up to the living room, re-oriented, and replaced with a spacious cook's kitchen complete with a row of skylights bringing light into the space. Adjacent the living room wall was completely opened up with La Cantina folding door system, connecting the interior living space to a new wood deck that acts as a continuation of the wood floor. People can flow from kitchen to the living / dining room and the deck seamlessly, making the main entertainment space feel at once unified and complete, and at the same time open and limitless. Klopf opened up the bedroom with a large sliding panel, and turned what was once a large walk-in closet into an office area, again with a large sliding panel. The master bathroom has high windows all along one wall to bring in light, and a large wet room area for the shower and tub. The dark, solid roof structure over the patio was replaced with an open trellis that allows plenty of light, brightening the new deck area as well as the interior of the house. All the materials of the house were replaced, apart from the framing and the ceiling boards. This allowed Klopf to unify the materials from space to space, running the same wood flooring throughout, using the same paint colors, and generally creating a consistent look from room to room. Located in Lafayette, CA this remodeled single-family house is 3,363 square foot, 4 bedroom, and 3.5 bathroom. While working within the existing kitchen footprint, the flow as studied carefully for both form and function to provide the homeowners the type of storage they need with the look they want. A family of five, who lives in a prestigious McLean neighborhood, was looking to renovate and upgrade their 20-year-old kitchen. Goals of the renovation were to move the cooktop out of the island, install all professional-quality appliances, achieve better traffic flow and update the appearance of the space. The plan was to give a French country look to this kitchen, by carrying the overall soft and creamy color scheme of main floor furniture in the new kitchen. As such, the adjacent family room had to become a significant part of the remodel. The back wall of the kitchen is now occupied by 48” professional range under a custom wood hood. A new tower style refrigerator covered in matching wood panels is placed at the end of the run, just create more work space on both sides of the stove. The large contrasting Island in a dark chocolate finish now offers a second dishwasher, a beverage center and built in microwave. It also serves as a large buffet style counter space and accommodate up to five seats around it. The far wall of the space used to have a bare wall with a 36” fireplace in it. The goal of this renovation was to include all the surrounding walls in the design. Now the entire wall is made of custom cabinets, including display cabinetry on the upper half. The fireplace is wrapped with a matching color mantel and equipped with a big screen TV. Smart use of detailed crown and trim molding are highlights of this space and help bring the two rooms together, as does the porcelain tile floor. The attached family room provides a casual, comfortable space for guest to relax. And the entire space is perfect for family gatherings or entertaining.

The "rooms" of the main floor are divided with wall and ceiling details that were carefully positioned and chosen not just to create a visual separation, but to allow a place for plumbing lines to run through the house. The main light fixture for this room was purchased at an antique shop. It took the homeowner five years to find the right place for it. A second fixture is repeated in the staircase.

These homeowners decided to take the plunge of totally reorganizing their garage and removing years of collections and clutter. We added five rolling racks on wheels bought from Costco. And used over 40 Sterilite brand bins in various sizes. Now labeled too!

AV Architects + Builders Location: McLean, VA, USA Our newest custom modern home, located in the heart of McLean, Virginia measures just over 8,700 square feet. Situated on a beautiful lot on Old Chesterbrook Road, the modern home design takes advantage of the lot’s natural contours and sight-lines. Spread throughout three levels, the home contains five bedrooms, six full bathrooms, one half-bath, and a three-car garage. The main level of our modern home design features an open-floor plan designed to entertain family and friends. The entry flows into both the grand dining room and the central area, dedicated to the kitchen, breakfast and a double height great room that opens to a large outdoor deck with picturesque views of the expansive backyard. Located just off the garage is a functional mudroom that features plenty of storage space. In addition to a large home office and powder room, the entire left wing is dedicated to a private master suite with an expansive custom his/her walk-in closet, a master bath with a rainfall shower and a free-standing soaking tub with his/her vanities. The upper level of our modern home design features three generously sized en-suite bedrooms with full baths and closets with a full-size laundry room with plenty of storage space. The lower level of our modern home design also features an en-suite guest bedroom with full bath and walk-in closets amenities. It also includes an expansive recreational room with a glass enclosed wine cellar to house your prized wine collection. To finish out the lower level, we added a full exercise room paired with a full bath with direct access to the outdoor terrace and complimented the house with plenty of storage space. The materials we used for our modern home design are of the highest quality brands. We wanted to hand-select materials that would last for years to come, require little to no maintenance, and compliment the modern aesthetic of the home. The home features aluminum-clad oversized windows, Nichiha rectangular siding, and brick with a pastel finish; all brought together under a vacation style hip roof. Overall, we wanted to create a modern home design that feels like a retreat but still offers all the required amenities a family needs to keep up with the fast pace of Northern Virginia.
