When she decided to renovate her kitchen, I had the honor of designing it for her as well as form a connection that I still cherish to this day. Upon my most recent visit to her home to take photos, she greeted me with fresh coffee and pastries, a testament to the warmth of her character. ​ The renovation journey with Sorena was one filled with creativity and collaboration. As the designer, I took charge of curating the finish and lighting selections, while also assisting in the layout of all the cabinetry. One significant transformation was the decision to replace the existing tile with brand new hardwood floors. This change added a natural warmth to the room, complementing the elegance of other elements and providing a graceful continuity with the rest of her home. The kitchen transformed into a culinary masterpiece, blending elegance with functionality. ​ The focal points of the space are the La Cornue Stove imported from France and its coordinating custom range hood. Sorena insisted on these for her dream kitchen, and they indeed became the statement pieces that brought the design together. We complemented these with countertops of honed finish quartzite from Italy, which we both fell in love with as soon as we saw it. Its subtle sheen and luxurious feel added an exquisite touch to the space. ​ No detail was too small in Sorena's kitchen, and every corner had a story. The dreamy breakfast nook, overlooking her koi pond garden, was carefully crafted with a built-in bench adorned with green fabric cushions, providing a cozy spot for morning reflections or intimate conversations. ​ The project, located in West Chester, PA, was a success not only in the transformation of the space but also in creating her dream kitchen. Rivington Street Building is a multi-family residential building in New York City that was designed, developed and constructed from the ground up by Paul A. Castrucci, Architect. In order to successfully take on the roles of developer and contractor, Castrucci utilized his ability to balance budget, schedule and constructability. The building is a part of its community and its facade responds to the human and contextual scale. The base of the building utilizes brick, tying it into the surrounding neighborhood. The top floors of the building break from the contextual base in form and material. The corrugated metal saw tooth roofline is a response to the environment, bringing in soft, northern light while providing roof area for a Photovoltaic array of solar panels. The top floor is connected to a roof garden filled with native plants. The result is a light-filled, dynamic space that is shaped by its relationship to daylight and connections to the exterior. Constructed in 2003, Rivington Street Building is an example of the firm’s energy efficient design that utilizes sustainable methods such as a high-performance envelope, a solar Photovoltaic (PV) array and rainwater collection/grey water system.

Located in the agricultural outskirts of Grand Junction, this project was designed as a forever home for our client to enjoy the views and live in the heart of her daughter’s ranch. This is the second home on the property, and being sensitive to the existing structures was key to the success of the project. Our client values privacy and maintaining the wide open nature of living within the farm lands that built the Grand Valley. We were able to be mindful of the existing home, as well as the distant neighbors, to create a mountain modern farmhouse, rooted in Grand Junction’s agricultural landscape. Design Concept One of the most prominent items on our client’s wish list was an abundance of natural light and a connection to the outdoor spaces. Without any natural features to provide shade to the home, we designed awning features, deep eaves and spacious porches to shield the large expanses of glass from the intense western Colorado sun. We designed well shaded clerestory windows to allow natural light to reach deep into the interior spaces and installed energy efficient, Low-E Weathershield windows to provide year round interior comfort. Our client also valued an open floor plan and durability of materials to make the home as maintenance free as possible. We installed tile flooring throughout for ease of cleaning, installed standing seam metal on the roof for longevity, and fiber cement board siding for durability. It is a harsh landscape in the Western Colorado sun, and we wanted our client’s home to withstand the tests of the desert. Aging in Place Because this was designed as a forever home, we used a number of unique design techniques to ensure the home was safe and suitable for aging in place. The most important technique we utilized was designing a “dropped” floor system allowing our floor to be level with the exterior patios. As in all of our homes, we utilized an energy efficient Insulated Concrete Form (ICF) stem wall foundation. This system also allowed us to easily drop our floor joists into it, eliminating any steps, big or small, going into the house. The seamless transitions not only provide safe maneuvering throughout the home, but also a contemporary flair on the farmhouse aesthetic. The positioning of the house relative to the existing home, large expanses of wood plank stamped concrete patios and 3+ foot wide doors throughout are only a few of the other approaches we took to make sure our client was safe and comfortable as they age in this home.

Conceived as an income-generating property, the clients benefited from our strategic support to ensure the profitability, efficiency, and optimization of their investment. Inspired by the sunset on a nearby hill, this kitchen subtly emits a cheerful and harmonious glow of colour. Many levels of lighting aid tasks and ambience. The authentic timber cabinetry links well with the heritage yet brings the interior into the current era. Live edge timber shelving and a rusty pendant shade add depth and a rustic nature. This all ties well with the property's simple sturdy natural form. Clients benefit from a cooking zone separate from the casual seating, plenty of work-surface space and practical finishes for a real working kitchen. This project was successful in gaining heritage consent to move the boiler and add a doorway.

Beechwood sits on the edge of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in Oxfordshire. Employing high-quality materials, simple detailing and robust forms, the design produced a contemporary and sustainable home appropriate to its context. The materials used in the project push conventional design boundaries but sit together harmoniously in the woodland setting. Blue/black engineering brickwork combine with pre-weathered Corten steel cladding, enabling the house to bleed into the landscape. Implementing energy saving solutions was integral to the success of this project and was a key part of the client brief. The design followed best practice in nine categories of sustainable design: energy and CO2 emissions, water, materials, surface water run-off, waste, pollution, health and wellbeing, management and ecology. Beechwood achieved a Level 4 certificate under The Code for Sustainable Homes.
