Klopf ArchitectureKlopf Architecture and Outer space Landscape Architects designed a new warm, modern, open, indoor-outdoor home in Los Altos, California. Inspired by mid-century modern homes but looking for something completely new and custom, the owners, a couple with two children, bought an older ranch style home with the intention of replacing it.
Created on a grid, the house is designed to be at rest with differentiated spaces for activities; living, playing, cooking, dining and a piano space. The low-sloping gable roof over the great room brings a grand feeling to the space. The clerestory windows at the high sloping roof make the grand space light and airy.
Upon entering the house, an open atrium entry in the middle of the house provides light and nature to the great room. The Heath tile wall at the back of the atrium blocks direct view of the rear yard from the entry door for privacy.
The bedrooms, bathrooms, play room and the sitting room are under flat wing-like roofs that balance on either side of the low sloping gable roof of the main space. Large sliding glass panels and pocketing glass doors foster openness to the front and back yards. In the front there is a fenced-in play space connected to the play room, creating an indoor-outdoor play space that could change in use over the years. The play room can also be closed off from the great room with a large pocketing door. In the rear, everything opens up to a deck overlooking a pool where the family can come together outdoors.
Wood siding travels from exterior to interior, accentuating the indoor-outdoor nature of the house. Where the exterior siding doesn’t come inside, a palette of white oak floors, white walls, walnut cabinetry, and dark window frames ties all the spaces together to create a uniform feeling and flow throughout the house. The custom cabinetry matches the minimal joinery of the rest of the house, a trim-less, minimal appearance. Wood siding was mitered in the corners, including where siding meets the interior drywall. Wall materials were held up off the floor with a minimal reveal. This tight detailing gives a sense of cleanliness to the house.
The garage door of the house is completely flush and of the same material as the garage wall, de-emphasizing the garage door and making the street presentation of the house kinder to the neighborhood.

We used a fun black and white geometric porcelain floor tile and this lovely hand finished wall tiles that had a gradient of shades. The counters are quartz and had a little black in them to tie into the floor and black plumbing fixtures. A little touch of gold in the hardware and mirrors and a deep teal color for the vanity to ground everything. We replaced the original swing door with a space saving pocket door. This allowed for more wall space to hang multiple towels. The show is complete with a handheld sprayer for easy bathing for small ones and the dog of course. Plenty of shower storage with the new 3 shelf niche featuring a mother of pearl herringbone tile for a little detail. Clients were so happy to have this update and the added value to their everyday life.

MerillatWarm and inviting, this spacious kitchen is not only the perfect place to prepare family dinners, it serves as a room to live out everyday tasks. It’s easy to imagine this kitchen as the center of the home from children dropping their coats in the hall and grabbing an afternoon snack at the Island, to mom enjoying a cup of coffee and leafing through a magazine at the built-in desk.
The ample workspaces surrounding the Island provide enough room for preparing even the most complex and involved recipes. And the well thought out zones add to the ease of cooking too. The cooking zone features a base pull-out spice rack next to the stove, allowing the chef to easily season their dish as they cook. And the clean up zone has a tilt-out sink tray for hiding sponges and soaps, plus a wall plate rack is a great way to show off the pattern on your dishes. It also makes it easy to put away clean dishes and set the table.
Besides fostering connections with family and friends, this kitchen was designed to be beautiful. The coziness of the space is really achieved with the finish on the cabinets. The color is a fresh approach to Cherry, and the result is a warm, natural brownish look. The addition of a glaze adds even more richness.
Veronica Sanders, Allied ASIDCrafting a perfect bedroom to foster learning and relaxation can be found when styling this room for an autistic boy in mind. We wanted to make sure that everything coming into the space could reduce environmental stimuli and anxiety. To achieve this, navy blue walls were replaced by a calming neutral white, which brought a light, airy feeling to the room.
Powerful images of black children as superheroes adorn the walls, giving visual cues to inspire strength and independence. This room takes a nod to what was before, highlighting beautiful shades of blue and terracotta orange with a plush rug as the centerpiece. There is plenty of storage for books in the built-in bookcase, and below, near the bed, sits a comfortable storage bench for further organizing needs. The new queen bed, complete with two gray shagreen nightstands on each side, add to the calming serenity with soft grays and delicate blue velvet drapes to create an ultimate space for focus and enjoyment. For modern convenience, these nightstands also feature USB table lamps for connecting learning devices. A special touch is added to an already enchanting room that will grow with this young man.
Triforce ConstructionAn established family with two growing children, the Meirs, wanted to design spaces that could give their children more independence within their home. Triforce, in collaboration with C9Design Inc., was commissioned to reimagine and transform their entire home.
A significant part of the renovation was the conversion of the attic space above the garage into a stunning independent apartment for their son. This new space was meticulously designed to include a custom three-piece bathroom and a walk-in closet, providing their son with a perfect balance of comfort and autonomy.
Meanwhile, their daughter was given a separate bedroom, complete with an ensuite bathroom and a private living area. This gave her a personal space tailored to her needs, fostering her independence while still maintaining the warmth and comfort of home.
In addition, a comprehensive basement renovation was undertaken. This included the addition of a stylish wet bar, a custom built-in fireplace wall, a bathroom, an office, and an extra bedroom. The basement became an entertainment hub, perfect for family gatherings and social events.
