After re-evaluating the project, the live / work compound is currently sited in a natural protected nest with post card views of Mount Sopris & the Roaring Fork Valley. The courtyard compound consist of the central south facing piece being the studio flanked by a simple 2500 sq ft 2 bedroom, 2 story house one the west side, and a multi purpose guest wing /studio on the east side. The evolution of this compound came to include the desire to have the building blend into the surrounding landscape, and at the same time become the backdrop to create and display his sculpture. “Jess has been our architect on several projects over the past ten years. Amber works from home and was sacrificing a dining room for her home office. By utilizing the double wide closet space in her guest bedroom, she now walks into her home without the reminder of work, and can have guests over for a meal in her dining room (dining room reveal coming soon). The walls were freshly painted Sea Salt by Sherwin Williams. This gives the room a fresh, clean look and also adds contrast to the beige carpet. Amber had her homework assignments cut out for her as she had to do some major purging in her throw all guest room. Once she started letting go, she was on a roll and continually surprised me as she cleaned out closets throughout the house. One dresser was filled with cds, dvds, books, albums, scrap-booking materials; items taking up precious real estate in her life that she didn't even know were there. There really wasn't a storage problem after-all, she was just holding on to a collection of things that no longer served her. Each time I would visit, and her space would become more open, I could see the weight lifting off her and her self love building. Amber had a recent breakup with her boyfriend and this makeover helped her not only focus on making a home sanctuary for herself, but helped her let go of the pains of the past and focus on the exciting future ahead. At one point when we were moving sofas in the living room (which we will also reveal soon), we found an ex's flip-flop. We were figuratively and literally sweeping away the past. Editing your home and your life makes room for your future; for new people and things. We are so happy to finally reveal the room to you! We can't wait to unveil the rest of Amber's home, once we complete the finishing touches. Challenges: Amber's home was filled with mix-matched furniture from family and college. She had no idea what her decorating style was. After shopping together and exchanging somepinterest boards, I was finally able to get a sense of what she loves. I had to work on a tight budget, which meant really digging out the creativity and utilizing other items in the home. See how I transformed a table from the discard pile into a faux marble bedside table by clicking web link. Amber's dad was able to help with the desk materials and building to cut costs. We wanted to save the closet doors in the event she sold her home or no longer needed an office someday. There wasn't any extra space to store these closet doors, so I used them as a headboard. The only items purchased were: Curtains, Curtain Rod, Bedspread Set, Throw Pillows, 2 Lamps and Paint.

Longevity – Building for sustainability means considering current and future needs when designing a space. Right now the DADU needs a simple kitchenette, but the homeowners thought ahead to aging in place and designed the DADU as a multi-use space with a kitchen that will be useable by a caregiver or other on-site family.

The Kitchen in this residence had to be outstanding for the owner’s ego and provide a template of future styles. We scoured kitchen showrooms from New York to Los Angeles to see cutting edge design, gadgets and layouts. After much consideration and given our long-standing relationship, we worked with New England Custom Cabinets, our go to contractor for custom millwork. We worked tirelessly with them to create the dream kitchen. The limited amount of space available in this waterfront home challenged us to not only make the best use of the available space, but also to make each space highly functional. In order to create the desired aesthetic and still provide storage, we created a floor to ceiling Wegne bank of cabinetry concealing the refrigerator and freezer and incorporating a pantry with a hidden pocket door and an appliance cabinet that has a one of a kind folding mechanism that allows it to sit flat against the adjacent wall. The Wenge cabinetry has a matte finish and is replicated in the cabinet paneling under the Princess White marble double waterfall island. To contrast the dark wood finish, the rest of the kitchen is completed in a high gloss polyester hand buffed white finish with walnut interiors. The upper cabinets appear to float on the three dimensional tile backsplash purchased directly from a vendor in Spain. The special touch latch magic hydraulic openers lift the cabinets vertically and are closed by the touch of a button as well. This is a feature that is years ahead on the design curve. All drawers and drawer fronts are installed using Blum’s Servo-Drive electronic opening system. Hafele LED interior cabinet lighting is applied throughout. Wow – State of the Art, High Tech Appliances that the owner and his friends are still figuring out. The kitchen is fitted out with Gagganeu appliances incorporating an induction cooktop and a state of the art electronic drop down exhaust hood. The microwave, special high-tech oven and warming drawer will keep the owner and his friends reading manuals for years to come. The perimeter counter tops are finished in the innovative Dekton indestructible man-made stone. All base cabinets have electronic openers and automatically light up upon opening. The square flush mounted recessed lights by Tech Lighting accentuate the clean lines of the kitchen. Two hand blown glass and brushed aluminum pendants from California illuminate the beautiful marble waterfall island. Unique toe kick lighting is also incorporated to illuminate the base as a nightlight and accent feature. In order to keep the ceiling “uncluttered” seamless speakers by SpeakerCraft was utilized. The audio, television and lighting are all controlled by Control4 Smart System, which is incorporated throughout the house. The select rift white oak planks in long lengths are finished in a special brushed patina with a gray stain to give the floors a natural driftwood finish. "When we bought our house in Poway 11 years ago, we were so happy with our huge master bath and Jacuzzi tub. It was such a huge step-up from our prior home. But just like the rest of the house, the master bath was already almost 20 years old and getting out dated and in need of remodeling. We broke up our remodeling projects into every couple of years, doing what we could ourselves and hiring out for the rest. The master bath was the last project and much too big for us to do on our own. We got 3 quotes from 3 contractors listed on Angie’s list which all had good reviews. One was a major re modeler and the other two were smaller contractors. We ended up going with TaylorPro because he was right in the middle and had great reviews. Kerry was very responsive getting us a timely estimate and had great suggestions for what we were looking for. From the start to finish it turned out to be a wonderful experience! To our delight, they were able to get started ahead of what we were told. Everything went almost as scheduled and we were informed constantly on where we were in the project. Kerry was very responsive to all our concerns or requests and we were never left wondering what the next step would be. His crew was wonderful, so polite and hard working. They were very professional, on time, considerate and knew exactly what they were doing. There were certain things we were really looking for in the remodel. After consulting with his designer we were able to select all the tile, accent tile and a beautiful frameless glass shower enclosure.
