Craig Bergmann Landscape Design was commissioned by the owner of this historic 1908 estate to develop a fresh, artistic re-interpretation of the existing gardens. An upper and lower garden room and stroll garden were redesigned with the key elements of running water, cool stone and shaded areas to preserve the garden’s original intent. A narrow rill connects two pools where water flows from the Upper Garden down to the Lower. Layering of foliage was as important as coordination of bloom times in order to achieve the sensuous, Moorish feel of the garden. The Stroll Garden plant collection, in contrast to the summer display of the Upper and Lower Gardens, was chosen for a spring flower display moving to a more textural foliage garden in summer. Designed by Risa Boyer and built by Hammer & Hand, this comprehensive external and internal remodel updated the home with an open layout featuring clean, modern stylings throughout and custom cabinetry by Ben Klebba of Phloem Studio. The team transformed a dark side room into a luminous sunroom overlooking Oswego Lake, designed to highlight a large stained glass window created by the homeowner’s family. A new enclosed garden breezeway connects the house to the freestanding garage, where H&H added a creative work space.

Our clients for this project are a professional couple with a young family. They approached us to help with extending and improving their home in London SW2 to create an enhanced space both aesthetically and functionally for their growing family. We were appointed to provide a full architectural and interior design service, including the design of some bespoke furniture too. A core element of the brief was to design a kitchen living and dining space that opened into the garden and created clear links from inside to out. This new space would provide a large family area they could enjoy all year around. We were also asked to retain the good bits of the current period living spaces while creating a more modern day area in an extension to the rear. It was also a key requirement to refurbish the upstairs bathrooms while the extension and refurbishment works were underway. The solution was a 21m2 extension to the rear of the property that mirrored the neighbouring property in shape and size. However, we added some additional features, such as the projecting glass box window seat. The new kitchen features a large island unit to create a workspace with storage, but also room for seating that is perfect for entertaining friends, or homework when the family gets to that age. The sliding folding doors, paired with floor tiling that ran from inside to out, created a clear link from the garden to the indoor living space. Exposed brick blended with clean white walls creates a very contemporary finish throughout the extension, while the period features have been retained in the original parts of the house.

Completed in the summer of 2013, this modern garden is located in Highland Park, Texas just north of Dallas. This garden features a modern edge with a swimming pool, concrete terraces, Ipe wood decks, a unique wood fence an outdoor shade structure with fireplace. The garden also includes and outdoor cooking area with Kalamazoo appliances.

A rustic walkway of irregular bluestone and a garden space heavily dependant upon texture: the robust foliage of Hosta and the feathery fronds of Ostrich Fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris), contrast well with the delicacy of the Variegated Ribbon Grass (Phalaris arundinacea var. picta) across the path. A lot of interest can be generated within a small plant palette.
