Example of a trendy exterior home design in Portland
Example of a trendy exterior home design in Portland

This project, located in the heart of the village of SiaSconset, Nantucket, MA, followed strict design requirement for the exterior architecture, as all new building and alterations to existing buildings are reviewed by Historic District Commission, a local governmental review board. The vernacular of the neighborhood leaned towards Victorian, so the design embraced the shingle-style.

The house is conceived as a series of horizontal planes inspired by the layering of fallen leaves found on the site’s ground plane. These layers play gently against each other emitting cracks and fissures of south facing light and unfolding to open up the house to its view and sweeping landscape to the north. Sited at the edge of a steep incline the spaces wrap the stair and chimney core as a series of split levels oriented to distant views.
Significant planning and governmental reviews were required on this project.

On this coastal site subject to high winds and flooding, governmental review and permitting authorities overlap and combine to create some pret-ty tough weather of their own. On the relatively small footprint available for construction, this house was stacked in functional layers: Entry and kids' spaces are on the ground level. The Master Suite is tucked under the eaves (pried-open to distant views) on the third floor, and the middle level is wide-open from outside wall to outside wall for entertaining and sweeping views.
