This homeowner loved her small, cozy house in St. Louis park, but after nearly 20 years, was ready to make the move and undergo a large remodeling project to finally gain the additional living spaces she craved daily. She desperately needed more and better storage, and dreamed of having additional space to support leisure activities such as crafting, a laundry space that didn’t depress her, a guest space, an additional space to flop down at the end of the day and watch TV, and a better, secondary bathroom for daily showering. After living in the house for so many years, a significant basement remodel would actually cost almost as much as the home itself originally was. But after years of planning, preparation and dreaming, it was finally time to take action and make her home better suit her life.

Upgrades like roll-outs, spice drawer and 15″ deep upper cabinets, helped to gain very important, accessible storage, where every item has a home.

Before the remodel this kitchen was dark but the cabinets were custom and the homeowner loved the floor plan. They just could not justify throwing them in a landfill because they did not like the color. We had the contractor paint the cabinets Benjamin Moore Everade Blue on the lowers and white on the uppers. While he had all the doors and drawers out they replaced the hinges and glides so that they would have soft-close cabinets.

Our homeowner had dreamt about one day redoing her beyond outdated kitchen since they day her husband carried her over the threshold. Vinyl flooring used for a backsplash, dingy carpeting, laminate with no sheen left to speak of and mismatched cabinetry…. it was time to make it happen. A year’s worth of planning later, her time capsule became one dreamy kitchen. Functionality reigns supreme in this small, but efficient kitchen where every cabinet has a story to tell and a place to store it. Countertop space to the right of the stove was an added necessity for function and safety. The raised snack bar is perfect for day to day meals and the lowered countertop was a must for this petite baker. A new lighting plan includes recessed lights, under-cabinet and accent lights, while new lighting fixtures reflect the client’s sense of style. Dingy brick patterned carpet was removed making way for new hardwood floors toothed in from the dining room. An airy palette gained some weight with the use of larger details; the oversized hood, beefy turned posts, prominent apron front sink and a grouping of tall cabinets on the refrigerator wall. This Bathroom was originally very small, the toilet was too close to the wall, there was a very small vanity and not much footspace. So NH Bath Builders expanded the bathroom by gaining space from a closet that was not being used on the other side of the wall. This bathroom renovation included tiled floor and shower walls with a Kohler Archer tub. As some bathroom renovations may require, NH Bath Builders removed all the sheetrock, reframed walls and then finished the bathroom. One of the things that many of our customers love about us is we can take care of everything for you we have licensed electrician and plumbers we work with and then we do everything else. So there is not any coordinating headaches for the homeowner.

When the homeowners decided to move from San Francisco to the Central Coast, they were looking for a more relaxed lifestyle, a unique place to call their own, and an environment conducive to raising their young children. They found it all in San Luis Obispo. They had owned a house here in SLO for several years that they had used as a rental. As the homeowners own and run a contracting business and relocation was not impossible, they decided to move their business and make this SLO rental into their dream home. As a rental, the house was in a bare-bones condition. The kitchen had old white cabinets, boring white tile counters, and a horrendous vinyl tile floor. Not only was the kitchen out-of-date and old-fashioned, it was also pretty worn out. The tiles were cracking and the grout was stained, the cabinet doors were sagging, and the appliances were conflicting (ie: you could not open the stove and dishwasher at the same time). To top it all off, the kitchen was just too small for the custom home the homeowners wanted to create. Thus enters San Luis Kitchen. At the beginning of their quest to remodel, the homeowners visited San Luis Kitchen’s showroom and fell in love with our Tuscan Grotto display. They sat down with our designers and together we worked out the scope of the project, the budget for cabinetry and how that fit into their overall budget, and then we worked on the new design for the home starting with the kitchen. As the homeowners felt the kitchen was cramped, it was decided to expand by moving the window wall out onto the existing porch. Besides the extra space gained, moving the wall brought the kitchen window out from under the porch roof – increasing the natural light available in the space. (It really helps when the homeowner both understands building and can do his own contracting and construction.) A new arched window and stone clad wall now highlights the end of the kitchen. As we gained wall space, we were able to move the range and add a plaster hood, creating a focal nice focal point for the kitchen. The other long wall now houses a Sub-Zero refrigerator and lots of counter workspace. Then we completed the kitchen by adding a wrap-around wet bar extending into the old dining space. We included a pull-out pantry unit with open shelves above it, wine cubbies, a cabinet for glassware recessed into the wall, under-counter refrigerator drawers, sink base and trash cabinet, along with a decorative bookcase cabinet and bar seating. Lots of function in this corner of the kitchen; a bar for entertaining and a snack station for the kids. After the kitchen design was finalized and ordered, the homeowners turned their attention to the rest of the house. They asked San Luis Kitchen to help with their master suite, a guest bath, their home control center (essentially a deck tucked under the main staircase) and finally their laundry room. Here are the photos: I wish I could show you the rest of the house. The homeowners took a poor rental house and turned it into a showpiece! They added custom concrete floors, unique fiber optic lighting, large picture windows, and much more. There is now an outdoor kitchen complete with pizza oven, an outdoor shower and exquisite garden. NE Minneapolis residence contacted Castle for a whole main floor remodel. Their “to do list” included, remodeling the kitchen, refinishing all hardwood floors, and remodeling the existing main floor bath. The homeowner’s were hoping to gain more storage, open the space for a lighter and brighter feel, and adding function to the kitchen. By relocating the range, closing off an unused pocket door, and opening up the kitchen into the living space we created a more functional layout. Custom cherry cabinets were designed with angled ends to maximize countertop space yet still have a comfortable pathway to the side door. The cabinets were designed for functionality and growth with the family; pull out cabinets were installed in several cabinets including the pantry, tip-out storage at sink, trash/recycling pull out, and two lazy-Susan corners. Neutral color tones were selected for the Cambria countertops and ceramic backsplash. New natural oak hardwood floors were installed to match the existing hardwood floors in the home. New lighting was selected with a new switching layout for an even more efficient space. The growing family is excited to enjoy the not only beautiful but functional open space.
