One day in our yard I noticed these two reclaimed timbers sitting side by side on top of a pile of timber. The roman numeral VIII and the 1E shown in this photograph were how timber frames of old were marked for assembly. Hewn timber of old was neither straight, square nor flat, so the joinery wasn't interchangeable. To avoid mistakes when raising the frame later, joiners scribed marks into timbers that were fit to each other, or married. © Carolina Timberworks

This was a relatively small scale remodel in the east bay hills. The floors of the home were separated by a dark stairwell prior to remodel. By removing walls, adding windows, and inserting a new floating stair, we were able to introduce daylighting and a visual centerpiece to the home.

This Pink Cristallo Quartzite is certainly the belle of the ball – rare, luxurious, and full of color. The stone appears quite delicate with its rosy hue “marred” by the unique pattern left by the dark veins scrawled across the surface.
