The scope was the complete renovation and facelift of the kitchen, powder room, master bedroom, master bathroom, guest suites, basement, and outdoor areas. Our clients wanted to bring warm tones such as orange and red throughout the 4-story Montecito townhome. They were open to discovering and implementing different interior design ideas in each section of the house. The Made to Last team kept much of the existing footprint and original feel of the cabin while implementing the new elements these clients wanted. To expand the outdoor space, they installed a composite wrap-around deck with picture frame installation, built to last a lifetime. Inside, no opportunity was lost to add additional storage space, including a pantry and hidden shelving throughout. Finally, by adding a two-story addition on the back of the existing A-frame, they were able to create a better kitchen layout, a welcoming entranceway with a proper porch, and larger windows to provide plenty of natural light and views of the ocean and rugged Thetis Island scenery. There is a guest room and bathroom towards the back of the A-frame. The master suite of this home is located in the upper loft and includes an ensuite and additional upstairs living space.

One of McKinley Burkart’s most aesthetically traditional projects, the Island Residence is a 15,000 square foot house made of pavilions and low bridges, completely surrounded by water. McKinley Burkart worked closely with landscape architects to design a residence that is fully integrated with its site. Water flows from a small fountain and trickles down, flowing throughout the site under glass bridges featuring the koi fish that populate the stream. The house implements Asian planning principles of connecting indoor and outdoor space using pavilions and bridges yet brings forth a West Coast, heavy timber aesthetic throughout the whole residence.

This kitchen was designed with the intent of hosting large family gatherings, upwards of twenty people at a time. Locating the kitchen adjacent to the informal eating area, the family room and the patio, was the ideal choice for entertaining. The implementation of a large double island, in an unexpected “L” shape, allowed for a ton of extra space without consequently feeling like an industrial environment. The choice to panel the expansive fridge and freezer allowed the mirrored stainless-steel display cabinets to really become a focal point in the space. These cabinets worked perfectly to house the client’s large stemware collection. Repeating the mirrored finish on the other side of the room, with a refined hood fan exudes glamour. Lastly, the sophisticated hardware and sculptural light fixtures elevate this kitchen to the contemporary, yet traditional, formal style found throughout the rest of the home.

Overview: Wing-like roofline houses a dramatic white villa in Costa Rica jungle. Studio Saxe was commissioned to design a villa on the hilltops of Santiago in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica. The primary objective was not only to provide dwellers with a connection with its jungle surroundings but also to generate an intimate relationship with an amazing view of the shoreline which brings its dwellers back to a more profound appreciation of the natural world. Concept Studio Saxe decided to create a large roof that would house within a series of bedrooms and living spaces that would all be turned sideways in order to face the prominent views. Interstitial spaces within the living volumes create gaps that enhance a deeper connection to the natural surroundings whilst moving about the dwelling. Design Every space in the home has been angled to view the ocean, and this twist creates a geometric relationship between the roofline and the spaces that became the primary element of design that both addresses the need for large overhangs (for climate control and comfort) but also generates a literal connection between the view and every space. This white house in the jungle acts as a canvas so that morning and sunset light reflect on its surfaces creating an array of colors that vary throughout the day. The angled surfaces also allow for the reflection of shadows and the textures of nature to play within the interstitial spaces that exist between the living spaces. Construction Due to the remoteness of the location and difficult access, Studio Saxe decided to create a light steel frame that could be prefabricated off-site, brought, and assembled in a fast and effective way. This not only ensured the quality of the construction in a very remote location, but it also allowed the process of construction to be very light touch and the intervention on the site to be very minimal while creating the sensation of large open spaces that bring the view in and at the same time are protected by a large roof held by steel “I” beams. Sustainability At Studio Saxe we believe that proper design with nature should be the first focus of sustainability and thus, this villa has been oriented properly to take advantage of predominant winds for cooling. Also, long overhangs protect from the sun and the rain in the most critical parts of the day creating comfort without the use of energy. A light touch construction method meant that the impact on the site was minimal during the implementation of the villa and the extended roofline also serves as a means to collect water and energy generation.

Our client’s foremost design priority was to create a space that is both glamorous and highly functional—equally suited to everyday living and to serve as a true stage for entertainment. At the core of the project was the restoration of the loft’s authentic character, thoughtfully reimagined to complement a refined industrial-chic aesthetic. The apartment’s previous incarnation leaned toward traditional design, with wainscoting, dropped ceilings, crown moldings, and concealed structural elements. In contrast, the new vision embraces the building’s industrial roots. Ceilings were opened to reveal the original structure, steel columns were exposed, and historic brick walls were uncovered, reintroducing a sense of honesty and architectural depth to the space. From the outset, the project involved close collaboration with a lighting specialist to transform what had been notably dark interiors: a layered lighting strategy was implemented, combining concealed architectural illumination with focused overhead accents. In the kitchen, salvaged industrial “X-Ray Shade” mercury-glass fixtures—originally designed for maximum reflectivity—introduce both character and warmth. Artist Cimone Berman was commissioned to create a series of bespoke mirrors for the space to further enhance the play of light. Each one-of-a-kind piece blends historical influences (reminiscent of aged material,) with contemporary artistic expression futher enhancing the sense of openness and luminosity throughout the loft while reinforcing the project’s balance between industrial authenticity and refined sophistication. A bright color palette of pinks, oranges, and chartreuse was implemented in this guest bedroom along with a mix of patterns to play off of the tones in the rug.

Step into the rejuvenation of a 1956 Golden Valley home, once owned by the clients’ mothers and now transformed under their ownership with a much-needed kitchen remodel. The original kitchen lacked countertop storage, featured outdated cabinets with black hinges and handles, embraced the typical soffits of the 50s era, and lacked an inviting ambiance. Fueled by a passion for the outdoors and gardening, the homeowners opted for earthy green cabinets from Crystal Cabinets, seamlessly blending with the natural sanctuary just beyond their back door. The addition of a black glaze over the green cabinets, along with walnut accents, brought warmth and personality to the space, achieving the cozy, friendly vibe the homeowners desired. Prioritizing functionality, a center island was introduced for entertaining grandchildren, top-of-the-line Subzero and Wolf appliances were seamlessly incorporated, and customized storage solutions were implemented to cater to the homeowners’ specific cooking needs. Soffits were removed, a closet with a vent stack was repurposed, and the vinyl floor was replaced with new hardwood to match the living room seamlessly. The homeowners’ collection of brass kitchenware found its elegant showcase in a traditional hutch with opaque seedy glass doors, adding a touch of sophistication to the space. Personal touches, such as hand-selecting a granite stone slab reminiscent of their favorite landscape in Duluth, a glazed ceramic tile backsplash reaching the ceiling line, and the inclusion of Bicycle Glass, a local artisan, for wall sconces and pendants, further enhanced the kitchen’s unique character. Blown glass orbs soften sightlines, while the gold/black brilliance kitchen faucet with a textured handle adds a playful touch. Every aspect of this new kitchen is a reflection of the homeowners’ down-to-earth personalities, creating a space that is both functional and filled with personality.

This Baton Rouge home, in The Settlement at Willow Grove, has a style inspired by a California Coastal vocabulary. It is a 2-story with 3 bedrooms, 2 full baths and a powder room. The square footage for the conditioned spaces is 4,340 sq ft and the total under roof is 5,343 sq ft. It is designed with the main living spaces having views and access to a comfortable side porch, patio and pool. The exterior style is cleverly woven into the interior design with architectural detailing and choices in finishes, fixtures and furnishings. As you enter the home through a steel and glass door unit, the coffered ceiling foyer opens to a stair and then leads you down a hallway with white oak beams that becomes the main circulation spine to most of the first-floor spaces in the house. One of those unique spaces is the wet bar that is integrated into a space below the stairs in such a way that the steps are expressed in the ceiling design. The kitchen, dining and living room form a great room with each space defined by white oak beams supported by corbelled pilasters. White oak accents are implemented throughout this area in cabinetry and in floating shelves on one entire wall in the living room. The kitchen features a large island and provides serving access to the side porch through counter height sliding window units. Access is also provided to a spacious butler pantry behind the kitchen. Along the main hallway, one can access the garage, a drop off area and the laundry room. Further down around the corner you’ll find the master suite with a beautifully appointed bathroom featuring a footed tub as the focal point with views through a large window to a small, landscaped area. The his and her closet is designed for each’s needs with an island. Upstairs you’ll find a large landing that can also serve as an exercise area and then find 2 more bedrooms, which share a bathroom. One of the bedrooms serves as a study but can also become a bedroom when needed with a murphy bed. This study/bedroom cantilevers off the corner of the house, providing spectacular views through a spray of windows to a community park down the street. A large playroom accessed of the landing is provided for family fun.

A historic row house in the museum district of Richmond, VA was renovated from the studs up. Many of its original elements were restored while functional, eco-friendly and efficient modern updates were implemented. An open concept main floor, three bright bedrooms upstairs with brand new bathrooms and a fully finished basement/den made this a brand new home, but with character and history built in.
