This 1600+ square foot basement was a diamond in the rough. We were tasked with keeping farmhouse elements in the design plan while implementing industrial elements. The client requested the space include a gym, ample seating and viewing area for movies, a full bar , banquette seating as well as area for their gaming tables - shuffleboard, pool table and ping pong. By shifting two support columns we were able to bury one in the powder room wall and implement two in the custom design of the bar. Custom finishes are provided throughout the space to complete this entertainers dream.

Reclaimed bluestone pavers are set with narrow lawn joins creating a patio space that extends from the kitchen and great room space. A bluestone stair leads over a fieldstone retaining wall to an ipe deck used for casual gatherings and outdoor cooking.

The entry terrace serves as an overlap between the entry garden and interior living spaces. A newly planted ginkgo tree punctuates one end of the terrace.

The living terrace has both formal and casual intentions so the paving is very precise but isn't without a sense of dynamic character.

View from end of drive shows how a woodland planting area is used to set the house back from the street. At once this provides an appropriate "curb appeal" while veiling the entry walk and terrace reserving a quiet space at the front of the home.

This footpath marks a friends and neighbors path through to the backyard gathering spaces. A row of three hornbeam trees continue the screening provided by a mature pre-existing hemlock hedge. The footpath passes between masses of mature Rhododendron and Double-file Viburnum.

The woodland garden, a mix of New England natives, provides an immersive setting for an ipe deck sitting atop a fieldstone retaining wall.
This is an example of a traditional backyard retaining wall landscape in Boston for fall.

Three terraces define the rear of the property. Immediate to the house a bluestone patio decends a subtle stair to the garden terrace where a vegetable garden is planned. The lower terrace in the foreground is kept open allowing for flexible use. A mature Japanese Maple is protected by a new retaining wall making it the spatial anchor of the rear garden.
