Modern Retreat is one of a four home collection located in Paradise Valley, Arizona. The site, formerly home to the abandoned Kachina Elementary School, offered remarkable views of Camelback Mountain. Nestled into an acre-sized, pie shaped cul-de-sac, the site’s unique challenges came in the form of lot geometry, western primary views, and limited southern exposure. While the lot’s shape had a heavy influence on the home organization, the western views and the need for western solar protection created the general massing hierarchy.
The undulating split-faced travertine stone walls both protect and give a vivid textural display and seamlessly pass from exterior to interior. The tone-on-tone exterior material palate was married with an effective amount of contrast internally. This created a very dynamic exchange between objects in space and the juxtaposition to the more simple and elegant architecture.
Maximizing the 5,652 sq ft, a seamless connection of interior and exterior spaces through pocketing glass doors extends public spaces to the outdoors and highlights the fantastic Camelback Mountain views.

Perched upon a small plateau in a rugged terrain, the house is surrounded by a powerful landscape. The building’s linear organization and expanse of glass has a dynamic relationship with its surroundings. Its siting, layout and structure combine to achieve a flexible, open living environment with generous access to the light, spectacular views and the outdoors.
The house is modularly planned, with a corridor to the east linking a series of semi-enclosed spaces facing the west. Broad sliding glass panels open to blur indoor/outdoor spatial boundaries and multiple bands of clerestory glass wash the interior with light and provide for natural ventilation. A perimeter structural frame paired with internal shear walls support the building. The steel and wood trusses provide a rhythm to the interior open spaces while connecting interior and exterior structural systems. The robust exterior column structure allows a structure-free glass envelope.

- RIDDLED TABLE 2.
The originality and workmanship of its legs are the outstanding features of the Riddled table, which incorporates the notion of porosity found in multiple architecture works by Steven Holl. The thin sheets of wood, folded through laser engraving, make this project even more spectacular in its apparent defiance of the laws of physics. These four legs, akin to origami sculptures, allow the passage of the internal light to create a myriad of lights and shadows.

- RIPPLES STOOL.
The Ripples bench by Toyo Ito, winner of the 2004 Golden Compass, has blossomed into a collection of different furniture complements. Amongst them, we may highlight the Ripples stool, fabricated with a laminated composite of five different solid woods. The seat shape, carved with industrial technology yet entirely hand-finished, feels soft and rich due to both the ductility of wood and Horm's passion for craftsmanship. Slide your hand along the surface to feel the seamless transition between walnut, mahogany, cherry, oak and ash.

- TIDE SIDEBOARD 01.
Tide reflects the style of its designer, Karim Rashid, who worked with various movements and dynamics in this project. The horizontal development of the front, made of evenly-spaced, thin sheets of MDF, confers a gentle and sculptured aspect to the whole. In addition to its remarkable design, Tide appears as a capacious and functional cupboard, with two drawers and a flap front for the living room, or with two drawers and two deep drawers for the bedroom.

- RIDDLED TOTEM BOOKCASE.
A true work of art, it consists of an aluminium frame and five elements made of origami-folded 2-mm wooden sheets thanks to a complex and patented technological process. Riddled Totem conveys great charm and elegance through its sculptural volumes, already characterized by the typical perforated texture of many famous works by Steven Holl. The result is a faceted container, light and bright as a diamond but made of wood following Horm's unmistakable style.
