Designing additions for Victorian homes is a challenging task. The architects and builders who designed and built these homes were masters in their craft. No detail of design or proportion went unattended. Cummings Architects is often approached to work on these types of projects because of their unwavering dedication to ensure structural and aesthetic continuity both inside and out. Upon meeting the owner of this stately home in Winchester, Massachusetts, Mathew immediately began sketching a beautifully detail drawing of a design for a family room with an upstairs master suite. Though the initial ideas were just rough concepts, the client could already see that Mathew’s vision for the house would blend the new space seamlessly into the fabric of the turn of the century home. In the finished design, expanses of glass stretch along the lines of the living room, letting in an expansive amount of light and creating a sense of openness. The exterior walls and interior trims were designed to create an environment that merged the indoors and outdoors into a single comfortable space. This steeply sloped property was converted into a backyard retreat through the use of natural and man-made stone. The natural gunite swimming pool includes a sundeck and waterfall and is surrounded by a generous paver patio, seat walls and a sunken bar. A Koi pond, bocce court and night-lighting provided add to the interest and enjoyment of this landscape. This beautiful redesign was also featured in the Interlock Design Magazine. Explained perfectly in ICPI, “Some spa owners might be jealous of the newly revamped backyard of Wayne, NJ family: 5,000 square feet of outdoor living space, complete with an elevated patio area, pool and hot tub lined with natural rock, a waterfall bubbling gently down from a walkway above, and a cozy fire pit tucked off to the side. The era of kiddie pools, Coleman grills and fold-up lawn chairs may be officially over.”

In the master bedroom, we went bold and dramatic. The wall color is a bold, dark teal to establish an energetic, moody feel. Mid-century influences can be seen in the bed, lighting, nightstands, and wall sculptures. The collage wall in this room would make any gallery owner jealous: The wife’s internationally-recognized professional photography, capturing travels as well as photos with personal meaning to the couple, mixes with iconic, limited-production photos of famous musicians. The room is anchored by a moroccan rug, and the raw, industrial look of the concrete columns and exposed steel make this space the ultimate in rock and roll glam.

This kitchen takes modern to the next level. Each island/area features a different style of light fixtures to compliment the materials. Islands feature waterfall edges and one island top is a huge slab of cantilevered concrete. The ceiling is made of walnut panels suspended at different levels. It blends the warmth of the floor to the ceiling. This space incorporates a coffee bar that is is the perfect spot to make your favorite morning beverage. It features a hidden icemaker, small sink, ample storage, and a coffee maker that would make any Barista jealous. The mosaic artwork is a perfect compliment to these wooden cabinets. A lounging area in front is just the spot to relax.

We gave an updated, modern look to the space by remodeling the fireplace. The sectional with swivel chair really maximized seating and opened up the room. I selected my favorite geometric linen drapery to use as window treatments. I layered these on top of roman shades in turquoise to reinforce the gray and beige palette with touches of cool aqua. I always recommend a round cocktail to go with sectionals to accommodate room flow. The geometric, high-contrast rug by Jaipur was one of the really fun items to select! I always know when a project is coming together because I start getting jealous of it! This was the case with this project from the moment I found the rug and drapery fabric!
