Brady Architectural Photography GETTING IT RIGHT Though the 1920s Mission Hills home was rich with Spanish Revival architectural details, a 1980s remodel did nothing to honor or even respect them. Some two decades later, the current homeowners brought in award-winning interior designers Margaret Dean and Robert Longdyke to undo the damage by designing a new kitchen that was appropriate to the era and lived well with the grandeur of the rest of the house. The clients also wanted the kitchen to be multifunctional and up-to-date. “Our first move,” Dean says, “was to reconfigure the space, which included the kitchen, a small broom closet and, in back, a guest bedroom and hallway.” She converted the closet to a passageway to the bedroom, redid the bedroom into a small sitting room with refrigerated wine room, and closed off the bedroom and exterior doors to make room for a boot-bench niche. With space planning complete, Dean and Longdyke focused on design details. “The colors were inspired from the home’s original tile and trompe l’oeil,” Dean says. “The alderwood cabinet doors with teal and yellow accents mesh perfectly with the ambience of the home. The cabinet door profile mimics the panel of the front door. “Robert Longdyke was instrumental in the selection of products, color scheme and accessories,” Dean says. “With over 45 years in the interior design field, he has accumulated a wealth of knowledge that was vital to the outcome.” Dean redesigned the existing pantry to maximize storage options and added a hutch off the breakfast nook for glassware, fine china and beverages. The hutch includes a base refrigerator with custom grillwork door panels. To keep the symmetry, the designers repeated the grillwork to face another cabinet on the opposite side of the hutch. They sealed a “small, ugly skylight” with a teal-colored soffit that adds height to the eight-foot ceiling. “This also allowed for a spectacular antique light to be hung. Design of the new round chandelier above the table was inspired by the vintage rectangular light over the island.” The tile work on the hood and backsplash reflects the colors, tone and whimsy of other areas in the home.

A solution for dry shade under oaks or conifers. Large, historic home from the 1930's overlooking downtown Santa Cruz. My clients are self-described "plantaholics" and tend to buy many plants, only to have them die. They have an extensive gardening area and low water budget. Our main goal was to make the overall design cohesive between various areas of the garden while utilizing interesting and unusual plant selections - a very fun project for me! We removed over 3,000 square feet of traditional grass and replaced it with several lawn alternatives. The first is a walkable groundcover that uses a fraction of the water of regular grass (and can be seen here in several seasons, one of which has tiny flowers); The second is a California native grass that grows long (or can be kept short) and can tolerate some shade. Both of these are excellent choices for clients with children or dogs who want a green patch without using excessive water. My clients love plants from Australia and South Africa so plants from the Proteacea and other Southern Hemisphere beauties are used predominantly throughout the project. Clean, flowing water is so important for wildlife and the beautiful stone fountain is a constant gathering spot for birds and other animals. My clients are beyond thrilled with their gorgeous, nature-filled garden and ever-expanding plant knowledge.

We removed over 3,000 square feet of traditional grass and replaced it with several lawn alternatives. The first is a walkable groundcover that uses a fraction of the water of regular grass (and can be seen here in several seasons, one of which has tiny flowers); The second is a California native grass that grows long (or can be kept short) and can tolerate some shade. Both of these are excellent choices for clients with children or dogs who want a green patch without using excessive water. My clients love plants from Australia and South Africa so plants from the Proteacea and other Southern Hemisphere beauties are used predominantly throughout the project. Clean, flowing water is so important for wildlife and the beautiful stone fountain is a constant gathering spot for birds and other animals. My clients are beyond thrilled with their gorgeous, nature-filled garden and ever-expanding plant knowledge.

Designed by Marc Jean-Michel of Reico Kitchen & Bath in Bethesda MD, this converted bedroom remodeled as transitional style inspired primary bathroom features Ultracraft Cabinetry in the Piper door style with Raw Cotton finish. The bathroom vanity are MSI Q Quartz in the color Shell White. The bathroom also features products not supplied by Reico but considered during the design process. The products include Loft Lilac 3/4” Penny Round Glass Tile, Pergola Wood White 12.5” Hexagon Matte Porcelain Tile and Highwater Blanco Fishscale Matte 2x5 Ceramic Tile from Tile Bar; Kohler sinks and medicine cabinets; Delta plumbing fixtures and cabinet hardware in Champagne Bronze; and a Duchess Acrylic Double Slipper Clawfoot Tub painted Plum Luck from Restoria Bathtub. “Our new primary bathroom is a dream come true. Marc at Reico was a huge help in laying out the vanities, as the design is a unique corner shape. He used his immense knowledge to help space the drawers and cabinets and helped me visualize the final product throughout the design phase,” said the client. “We brought our tile samples to our appointment and took time to evaluate all potential finishes before making selections. This gorgeous, walkable grass alternative is literally watered ONCE A MONTH folks!!! In the summertime! This is true water conservation! Large, historic home from the 1930's overlooking downtown Santa Cruz. My clients are self-described "plantaholics" and tend to buy many plants, only to have them die. They have an extensive gardening area and low water budget. Our main goal was to make the overall design cohesive between various areas of the garden while utilizing interesting and unusual plant selections - a very fun project for me!
