As part of a full major basement renovation, the family wanted an updated and refreshed family den. The first thing we did was design a more effective plan for recessed lighting. We assisted the client in selecting all materials, finishes, and colours including the gorgeous 24" x 24" floor tile from Italy. The full living space is very cozy year round with its heated floors and uncluttered and cohesive look and feel, which works with the stone fireplace façade as well as the adjoining gym, wine cellar, and full bathroom.

Location: Overland Park, KS Service: Value-Based, Full-Service Remodel & Furnishings This home was screaming, ‘I have SO much potential!’ The scope included a kitchen refresh, living room refresh and furnishing, and a full renovation for the primary bathroom. A lot can be done even on a tight budget and this project is a perfect example of that. In the kitchen, dual-tone painted cabinets, new hardware, new counters and backsplash, additional corner base cabinet, a custom hood and open shelving really set the tone when entering the home. In the living room, perhaps the biggest change was the layout. The seating area was rotated 180 degrees to face the fireplace which received a colorful facelift to match the kitchen shelving. The primary bathroom was gutted. The open half wall was replaced with a full wall and pocket door to create a true master suite. Light and bright selections make this small space feel larger. "When we bought our house in Poway 11 years ago, we were so happy with our huge master bath and Jacuzzi tub. It was such a huge step-up from our prior home. But just like the rest of the house, the master bath was already almost 20 years old and getting out dated and in need of remodeling. We broke up our remodeling projects into every couple of years, doing what we could ourselves and hiring out for the rest. The master bath was the last project and much too big for us to do on our own. We got 3 quotes from 3 contractors listed on Angie’s list which all had good reviews. One was a major re modeler and the other two were smaller contractors. We ended up going with TaylorPro because he was right in the middle and had great reviews. Kerry was very responsive getting us a timely estimate and had great suggestions for what we were looking for. From the start to finish it turned out to be a wonderful experience! To our delight, they were able to get started ahead of what we were told. Everything went almost as scheduled and we were informed constantly on where we were in the project. Kerry was very responsive to all our concerns or requests and we were never left wondering what the next step would be. His crew was wonderful, so polite and hard working. They were very professional, on time, considerate and knew exactly what they were doing. There were certain things we were really looking for in the remodel. First off, the bathroom was pretty large with a high ceiling. In the winter months, it was always really cold and hard to heat. To solve that we had TaylorPro install heated flooring beneath the travertine tiles. We also needed a custom vanity that would conceal hair appliances, most of our personal toiletries and have enough storage for everything else. The cabinetry was custom designed to exactly what we were looking for. Lastly, we wanted a classic, timeless look using tumbled travertine. After consulting with his designer we were able to select all the tile, accent tile and a beautiful frameless glass shower enclosure. After serving as a rental for some time, this home was ready to be reclaimed by its owner and her son. Gutting “back to the studs” was an understatement for this one. This transformation involved replanning everything; including the roof, the HVAC system, the entire plumbing system, and relocating the side entrance and staircase to the back of the house. Only the subfloors, the exterior framing structure, and the brick remains from this original 1940’s-built bungalow. When we’re renovating an old structure, we’re bound to find some surprises. This renovation did not disappoint! From basement to roof, we found more than a few, shall we say, potentially catastrophic surprises along the way. Let’s start with the basement. The homeowner wanted to update the basement and make it a usable living space for her adult son as well as a spa with a sauna for her. This required bringing the 6 foot ceiling height up to code at 7 feet. To do this, we had to re-think the HVAC system that was in the basement ceiling. When we opened up the basement ceiling to remove the HVAC supply and return trunks, we discovered asbestos! The asbestos had to be removed before we could dismantle and remove the HVAC system. For the main floor, when we were replanning the existing 2-bedroom layout to create two master bedrooms each with their own ensuites, we looked at the possibility of removing the main load-bearing wall. But our investigations led to the discovery that the load bearing wall was not lined up with the roof or the basement load points, so the load of the house was not continuous throughout. This was a disaster waiting to happen. And as we found out, this lack of alignment was causing major issues with the roof when we went to replace the shingles. We discovered portions of the roof truss in very poor condition, literally moments away from giving out. These were replaced and other truss components were fortified before we went on to re-shingle the roof and replace all the soffits and eavestroughs. Once the structural and space planning elements were sorted out, we could turn our focus to helping this homeowner select the finishes she and her son wanted for their new spaces. She wanted white all the way, and he wanted bold colours. You will see these color choices reflected in their private bathrooms as well as in the upper kitchen and living area that she will mostly use, and the basement entertainment area that he will mostly use. To round out the personalization of this made-new-again home, we converted the basement into an entertainment center with a bar for her son, and a sauna and third full bathroom with a jacuzzi tub for a spa-like feel for her. Without having to build from scratch, this homeowner got the custom home of her dreams. While you “can’t teach an old dog new tricks”, the sky’s the limit on how you can transform an old home into the home of your dreams. For this project, our homeowners’ bathroom was dark and gloomy – builders-grade that was no fun to use. Small, dark shower, old oak vanities, drop in tub with tile surround. She desired to have a bath with a spa feel, so taking baths and showers and preparing for the day would be more enjoyable. EKB Home redesigned the layout to include a curbless, walk in shower with body sprays, wand, rain head, and fixtures (in matte black) for optimal shower enjoyment. We then designed and placed this free standing bathtub with bottle shelf behind and focal light fixture above. Our custom floating vanities – with integrated lighting – were then built and installed and include several pull-out elements for enhanced storage and function. We then selected this mosaic tile for behind the new mirrors and sconces, along with the large format tiles for the floor. A complete transformation that thrills our homeowner. As happens with a majority of our remodels, our client hired us 2 years later to have us remodel her kitchen, laundry, pantry, two guest baths, dining room, and bar!

What started as a minor facelift, the project underwent a series of design iterations to address the growing family's needs. The clients wanted a clean and contemporary home that wouldn't stick out in this typically traditional San Luis Obispo neighborhood. The final design was a 4 bedroom home with a large great room and play room. A 9' x 16' pocketing slider door opens the great room to the lush backyard which sits directly adjacent to the San Luis Creek. Smooth trowel stucco, a standing seam metal roof, and a texas limestone clad spine wall blend seamlessly with the warmer trim accents and clear cedar eaves.
