This Los Angeles home addition by Sun Development introduces a new luxury primary suite, seamlessly blending elevated materials with functional elegance. A vaulted ceiling with natural wood paneling draws the eye upward, while wide-plank European oak flooring grounds the space in warmth and sophistication. A custom linear fireplace anchors the room, adding both visual interest and cozy ambiance. Expansive sliding glass doors flood the suite with natural light and open onto a private balcony, creating a fluid indoor-outdoor connection and offering a tranquil place to unwind. The adjoining bathroom evokes a spa-like atmosphere, featuring a sculptural freestanding soaking tub, a dual rainfall shower enclosed in frameless glass, and a long double vanity topped with stone counters and illuminated by LED-integrated mirrors. Brass fixtures and warm, layered lighting add a soft glow and sense of refinement. Finishing the suite is a thoughtfully designed walk-in closet outfitted with custom built-ins, maximizing storage while maintaining clean lines and an uncluttered aesthetic. Every element of this addition was crafted with comfort, luxury, and livability in mind—an elevated sanctuary in the heart of the city.

The master bedroom is a cozy space, capturing the character of the previous roofline with a rustic beam detail. A built in dog bed takes advantage of unused attic space and a new niche became the perfect spot to house the current reading list. Because of the age of the home, the design was about embracing the cottage feel of the home. This was done with modern windows that let in abundant natural light for their size and location. Supply chain issues significantly delayed the project when the windows took far longer than expected or planned, but they were absolutely worth the wait. They fit the aesthetic of the home, maximize natural light, and complement the eclectic vibe within the master suite. The space was further personalized with bold wallpaper that features an antique vibe. The chandelier was curated for the space to add interest and uniqueness to the room. Instead of a door, the opening to the closet gives a spatial feel to the suite and maximizes function and flow.

Bedroom makeover. Bed made by hand from hand-cut trees and pine board. I added lighting and feminine details to create a romantic feel as well as to balance out the rustic elements. Mirrors were used to create the illusion of more space and to enhance the glow of the lighting. The entire room was redone by rethinking existing decorations and just a few additions. Including materials to make the bed, the total redo was still under $400.

Custom reclaimed log bed with bent blackened steel side tables. Photography by Manolo Langis Located steps away from the beach, the client engaged us to transform a blank industrial loft space to a warm inviting space that pays respect to its industrial heritage. We use anchored large open space with a sixteen foot conversation island that was constructed out of reclaimed logs and plumbing pipes. The island itself is divided up into areas for eating, drinking, and reading. Bringing this theme into the bedroom, the bed was constructed out of 12x12 reclaimed logs anchored by two bent steel plates for side tables.

Bedroom - mid-sized contemporary master dark wood floor bedroom idea in Miami with blue walls

When Cummings Architects first met with the owners of this understated country farmhouse, the building’s layout and design was an incoherent jumble. The original bones of the building were almost unrecognizable. All of the original windows, doors, flooring, and trims – even the country kitchen – had been removed. Mathew and his team began a thorough design discovery process to find the design solution that would enable them to breathe life back into the old farmhouse in a way that acknowledged the building’s venerable history while also providing for a modern living by a growing family. The redesign included the addition of a new eat-in kitchen, bedrooms, bathrooms, wrap around porch, and stone fireplaces. To begin the transforming restoration, the team designed a generous, twenty-four square foot kitchen addition with custom, farmers-style cabinetry and timber framing. The team walked the homeowners through each detail the cabinetry layout, materials, and finishes. Salvaged materials were used and authentic craftsmanship lent a sense of place and history to the fabric of the space. The new master suite included a cathedral ceiling showcasing beautifully worn salvaged timbers. The team continued with the farm theme, using sliding barn doors to separate the custom-designed master bath and closet. The new second-floor hallway features a bold, red floor while new transoms in each bedroom let in plenty of light. A summer stair, detailed and crafted with authentic details, was added for additional access and charm. Finally, a welcoming farmer’s porch wraps around the side entry, connecting to the rear yard via a gracefully engineered grade. This large outdoor space provides seating for large groups of people to visit and dine next to the beautiful outdoor landscape and the new exterior stone fireplace. Though it had temporarily lost its identity, with the help of the team at Cummings Architects, this lovely farmhouse has regained not only its former charm but also a new life through beautifully integrated modern features designed for today’s family.
