2012 NARI Capital CotY, Merit Award Winner, Residential Basement Interior Newer home in suburb of Ashburn, VA was a home to this military couple. With their growing family and their daughter moving back, they wanted more space. The basement was delivered unfinished from the original builder. The owners could not come up with a desirable floor plan for the space due to stairway that builder put in place and locations of Furnace and hot water heater. After our design staff consulted this couple, we put in a plan in place that they never imagined it to be possible and even affordable. The moved the hot water heater and relocated a stack of return duct to allow more floor space. Then we have redesigned couple of headers to make room for stairway to be redirected. Now the new stairway comes directly from upper level family room and got an open glass door to allow light down the stair path. Just to the left of the stairs we have square off an area for Mechanical and storage room. This confined all ducts, hot water heater and furnace to be in their dedicated area as well as offer storage shelving for additional seasonal packages. The primary goal was to have a home office, full bathroom, guest bedroom and a large entertaining area for their large Texan relatives to visit. We have removed couple of bearing walls by the way of recess structural beams and decorative columns to make the entertaining area as large as to can be. Now we has an 35’x35’ area covered in Exotic Tigerwood and decorated with paneled walls, multi layer crown molding, chair rail, shadow boxing and columns . Just as you come down the steps we have dark cherry built ins to show off her prized possessions, to the right of it double French doors lead us to their home office/library. We have more built-ins along the wide hallway leading into entertaining area. A full bath with double entry to main area and adjacent bedroom furnished with full large walk in shower covered with porcelain decorative tiles and furniture style vanity. We have excavated and created an e-grass window to allow a Bedroom in the left of this basement. A large bar was implemented on the far walls of this basement filled in with cherry custom cabinetry, exotic stone top, tile floors and decorative pendent lights was a place to watch football games and hang out. Focal point of this basement was placement of a new gas fireplace embedded in ledge stone and a large LED TV just above it. This assembly was placed across a sectional piece of furniture and was popping out as you enter the room. By carefully selecting the wood tones of built ins and bar cabinetry complimenting the Exotic wood floors and stone top this place was now the home to our their family events.

An existing structure on the tight lot was removed to make way for the new home. 84% of the construction waste, from both the previous structure and the new home, was diverted from a landfill. ZED designed to preserve the existing mature trees on the perimeter of the property to minimize site impacts, and to maintain the character of the neighborhood as well as privacy on the site. EXTERIOR EXPRESSION. The street facade of the home relates to the local New England vernacular. The rear uses contemporary language, a nod to the family’s Californian roots, to incorporate a roof deck, solar panels, outdoor living space, and the backyard swimming pool. Arris hips and Valley Tiles Project. Back story. The owner of Dewson Construction has spent close to 15 years assembling this parcel of land. He had commissioned Archer Buchanan to design the house but just before construction started his wife suddenly died. Dewson lost interest in the project and put the land on the market subject to his company building whatever residence was approved. The purchaser Mr. Russomagno purchased the land and the plans and had Dewson’s build it. When the new owner met with the architects to go over the plans the only change to the original layout was he has a kitchen pantry door moved 3’ to the left! Richard Buchanan, who we has already done a number of roofs with pushed for our tiles. They were not sure if he wanted a brown or a Classic grey roof, so the roofer and I laid up a display of both. Mr. Russomagno is a man of few words stood in front of the display and said ‘Stuart if this was your house what would you have?” Dangerous question to ask a roof tile junky. He went off for about half and hour and when he came back I had laid up display starting with a few rows of Classic grey then blending with the Bown to give the look of an old weather stained roof. The client took one look at it and said ’Yes I like that’. Much later after the Russomagno’s where living in the house he called me to say that some friends had visited and asked him where he got all the old tiles from! Install: This roofer had never installed on of our tiles before or had never installed a batten system either. We spent a day with him on site to get things started and kept in close contact during the install. Once he got the idea of installing the battens, laying the hard parts of the roof first, the gables, the valleys and hips and around dormers etc, leaving filling in the field until after, he realized the huge time advantage battens provides especially on a steep pitched roof like this.

The lighting technique to brighten the cavity in the old house area highlights the unique cavity decoration design in the architectural structure. The color temperature is warm white light, which not only restores the color and texture of the building itself, but also strengthens the modeling arc of the gable part of the traditional Chinese building. At night, under the background of the lights, dreams of the past and the present can pass through the past and the present, feeling the unique Chinese architectural charm of the flying eaves and the white walls and black tiles. The promenade part has changed from the traditional, and mostly uses linear facade lighting to provide functional lighting for the moving lines, so that the traditional and elegant architectural atmosphere also contains a bright and modern temperament. Overview: Wing-like roofline houses a dramatic white villa in Costa Rica jungle. Studio Saxe was commissioned to design a villa on the hilltops of Santiago in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica. The primary objective was not only to provide dwellers with a connection with its jungle surroundings but also to generate an intimate relationship with an amazing view of the shoreline which brings its dwellers back to a more profound appreciation of the natural world. Concept Studio Saxe decided to create a large roof that would house within a series of bedrooms and living spaces that would all be turned sideways in order to face the prominent views. Interstitial spaces within the living volumes create gaps that enhance a deeper connection to the natural surroundings whilst moving about the dwelling. Design Every space in the home has been angled to view the ocean, and this twist creates a geometric relationship between the roofline and the spaces that became the primary element of design that both addresses the need for large overhangs (for climate control and comfort) but also generates a literal connection between the view and every space. This white house in the jungle acts as a canvas so that morning and sunset light reflect on its surfaces creating an array of colors that vary throughout the day. The angled surfaces also allow for the reflection of shadows and the textures of nature to play within the interstitial spaces that exist between the living spaces. Construction Due to the remoteness of the location and difficult access, Studio Saxe decided to create a light steel frame that could be prefabricated off-site, brought, and assembled in a fast and effective way. This not only ensured the quality of the construction in a very remote location, but it also allowed the process of construction to be very light touch and the intervention on the site to be very minimal while creating the sensation of large open spaces that bring the view in and at the same time are protected by a large roof held by steel “I” beams. Sustainability At Studio Saxe we believe that proper design with nature should be the first focus of sustainability and thus, this villa has been oriented properly to take advantage of predominant winds for cooling. Also, long overhangs protect from the sun and the rain in the most critical parts of the day creating comfort without the use of energy.
