The master bath was dressed up with a new capiz shell chandelier over the tub, custom drapes with a patterned black and gold drapery trim and a remote controlled woven window shade. The bathroom was further enhanced with antique gold plumbing fixtures and cabinet hardware, which contrast beautifully against the dark cabinets. Custom mirror frames were added to fill the space over the vanity, while black and gold wall sconces add a touch of sophistication.

Trendy enclosed family room photo in Austin

The challenge with this project was to transform a very traditional house into something more modern and suited to the lifestyle of a young couple just starting a new family. We achieved this by lightening the overall color palette with soft grays and neutrals. Then we replaced the traditional dark colored wood and tile flooring with lighter wide plank hardwood and stone floors. Next we redesigned the kitchen into a more workable open plan and used top of the line professional level appliances and light pigmented oil stained oak cabinetry. Finally we painted the heavily carved stained wood moldings and library and den cabinetry with a fresh coat of soft pale light reflecting gloss paint. Photographer: James Koch

Warm wood penny gap walls and hand-cut tenon handrails reinforce the home’s modern cabin appeal while adding character and craftsmanship to the room. By relocating the sink and dishwasher to the island the new kitchen layout allows the owners to engage with guests seated at the island and the banquette while maintaining a view to the outdoor terrace.
