We described the original staircase as "Post Colonial Funeral Home" with its dowdy painted spindles and off-the-rack oak handrail. The owners wanted a harder edged, more contemporary look for the new interior, so it was out with the old, and in with a new, very fresh look using steel and pickled oak. The railings were hand made, and custom installed. The new light fixture completes the look.

The original stairway was reworked and exposed on both sides to create a fully open effect from the front of the house to the rear. The bar area at the left was originally an enclosed laundry room and utility space, closing the kitchen off from the main living spaces and the water front views.

Situated on a corner lot, it was critical to merge the new rear facade with the more traditional original house facing the street. The box bay window was preserved from the original house, touched up with new windows and finishes. The small coffee porch is just off the Primary suite, and accessible to the home office via the door in the photo.
