Grandma’s House is a non-profit, faith-based, home and outreach center that provides safe shelter to homeless and/or abused pregnant teens between the ages of 12 and 19. Established in 1992, the organization has made due with an aging home and cramped facilities limiting the number of girls in need that they can service. This latest addition (the second expansion since the organization’s beginning) will help Grandma’s House provide more services to teen mothers and their little ones. The remodel gives the residents a much needed larger space including a teaching kitchen, large back deck, computer room, expanded living area for a full time night supervisor, and family dining room to accommodate the growing need in our community.
Grandma’s House was made possible by a large number of donations and services from local businesses including; Pinnacle Architecture, Kirby Nagelhout Construction, The High Desert Design Council, First Story, W&H Pacific, Froelich Engineering, Tomco Electric, J&R Fire, Northcoast Electric, McMurray and Sons Roofing, Mt. View Heating, Gordon Pennock Cabinetry, as well as many other generous companies.

DESIGN + INNOVATION: Award of Excellence
PROJECT: RE_FAB Mobile Fabrication Lab
CLIENT: Ford College Community Challenge and Project RE_
ARCHITECTURE FIRM: Urban Design Build Studio
CONTRACTORS: Urban Design Build Studio
PHOTOGRAPHER: Urban Design Build Studio
DESCRIPTION: RE_FAB is a mobile fabrication lab that functions as an educational and digital fabrication tool with the capacity to serve schools, facilities, and communities. The project is designed to exploit and celebrate the potentials of the tools that it houses, and will house (full size CNC router, laser cutter, vacuum former, digital spatial scanner, and a 3D printer) and was funded by grants from two corporations interested in architecture community outreach projects.
JURY COMMENTS: This is a project that every jury member unanimously loved. Every aspect of its problem-solving design seemed smart and responsive, and it is those responses that resulted in a design that is both innovative and legible to what its function is intended to serve. Why is there not one of these in my neighborhood?

The Ubuntu Center provides pediatric HIV testing and treatment, counseling, education, and community empowerment. The design is focused on de-stigmatization and normalization of HIV testing and treatment. It provides access to a state-of-the-art facility in a beleaguered post-apartheid community. The design is a model for sustainable development that begins with environment and extends to the preservation of life.
Funded globally and operated locally, Ubuntu reflects a world defined by unprecedented global connection and the resurgence of local, community based organization. Ubuntu center brings state of the art services to vulnerable children by providing centrally located, free and accessible social services in a single facility. It comprises a multi-purpose hall for education, concerts and shelter when needed; an empowerment wing with career guidance and computer centre, and a fully equipped Pediatric HIV /TB testing and counseling clinic with 47,691 people reached through community HIV prevention outreach. Ubuntu’s organic rooftop garden, together with Ubuntu’s neighborhood gardens feed 2,245 students daily. It provides a timely and practical template for sustainability on a societal as well as an environmental level. Ubuntu has been adopted by the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS relief (PEPFAR), and has become a model of success for the Clinton Global initiative, the Kresge foundation, and countless individual supporters.
