The 5000-square foot cottage achieves not only this specific geographical inspiration but an aesthetic that so many property owners and builders aspire to create – a look that is truly timeless in its construction and interior finishes. “The hybrid style pays beautiful homage to the past while also inspiring the future,” says Mike. “This style of cottage ages very well,” he says, noting a trend towards transitional design across the regions they serve – Muskoka, Georgian Bay and Lake of Bays.

This Second Empire Victorian, was built with a unique, modern, open floor plan for an active young family. The challenge was to design a Transitional Victorian home, honoring the past and creating its own future story. A variety of windows, such as lancet arched, basket arched, round, and the twin half round infused whimsy and authenticity as a nod to the period. Dark blue shingles on the Mansard roof, characteristic of Second Empire Victorians, contrast the white exterior, while the quarter wrap around porch pays homage to the former home. Architect: T.J. In 1949, one of mid-century modern’s most famous NW architects, Paul Hayden Kirk, built this early “glass house” in Hawthorne Hills. Rather than flattening the rolling hills of the Northwest to accommodate his structures, Kirk sought to make the least impact possible on the building site by making use of it natural landscape. When we started this project, our goal was to pay attention to the original architecture--as well as designing the home around the client’s eclectic art collection and African artifacts. The home was completely gutted, since most of the home is glass, hardly any exterior walls remained. We kept the basic footprint of the home the same—opening the space between the kitchen and living room. The horizontal grain matched walnut cabinets creates a natural continuous movement. The sleek lines of the Fleetwood windows surrounding the home allow for the landscape and interior to seamlessly intertwine. In our effort to preserve as much of the design as possible, the original fireplace remains in the home and we made sure to work with the natural lines originally designed by Kirk.

The setting for Night at the Queen is Downtown Bryan Texas, a truly unique, quaint, and well restored historic district not to be missed if you are visiting the Bryan College Station area. The historic Queen Theatre (correct spelling!) is undergoing a complete restoration. One of my favorite buildings, it had to be the focus of this painting! Upon completion of the restoration, I can imagine an evening that feels much like this with a few clouds still illuminated by a low, fading sunset complimenting the stunning lights of the district at night reflected on the wet sidewalks from a passing shower. While we await the arrival of the Queen, come join me in anticipating a future scene that pays homage to the past and preserves the Queen for future generations. Here, the crowd is already gathering. I love this room! Notice the drawer storage below the bench. The top drawers of the sideboard are equipped with electronics for charging various devices. We deleted the center room light fixture, moved the table off center, then added wall sconces and this array of ceiling-mount lights - switched separately and dimmable. Now the table can be placed this way or that, and good lighting is always available.
