One major challenge was storage – even with the additional square feet. Since we didn’t want to lose any windows, we couldn’t add many upper cabinets. So, we created an extra wide island with shallow storage underneath flanking both sides. On the island side, it houses spices and on the opposite side, it houses additional liquor bottles close to the Butler’s Pantry. The pedestal of the island also houses ample storage for serving pieces. A small wall was removed (and electrical controls relocated) so the Butler’s Pantry could be added in place of the folding tables to assist with storage issues and give an interesting piece of “furniture” look with pin-striping. The walkway between the Butler’s area and Dining was also opened up - as a result, the existing paneling on the Dining Room side had to be reworked as well. All appliances were relocated…not one stayed in it’s place! LED strip lights were added in the Butlers and 4” LED recessed cans were used throughout the renovation. Decorative “street-light” style fixtures were used over the windows instead of cans to add personality and clear pendants float over the island so as not to disturb the overall feel of the room. The large island provides great space for prep, entertaining and also doubles as a laundry folding table. The client is a baker so we used antimicrobial finishes that are safe and durable yet beautiful.

Inspiration for a french country kitchen remodel in Atlanta

Lincoln Lighthill Architect employed several discrete updates that collectively transform this existing row house. At the heart of the home, a section of floor was removed at the top level to open up the existing stair and allow light from a new skylight to penetrate deep into the home. The stair itself received a new maple guardrail and planter, with a Fiddle-leaf fig tree growing up through the opening towards the skylight. On the top living level, an awkwardly located entrance to a full bathroom directly off the main stair was moved around the corner and out of the way by removing a little used tub from the bathroom, as well as an outdated heater in the back corner. This created a more discrete entrance to the existing, now half-bath, and opened up a space for a wall of pantry cabinets with built-in refrigerator, and an office nook at the rear of the house with a huge new awning window to let in light and air. Downstairs, the two existing bathrooms were reconfigured and recreated as dedicated master and kids baths. The kids bath uses yellow and white hexagonal Heath tile to create a pixelated celebration of color. The master bath, hidden behind a flush wall of walnut cabinetry, utilizes another Heath tile color to create a calming retreat. Throughout the home, walnut thin-ply cabinetry creates a strong contrast to the existing maple flooring, while the exposed blond edges of the material tie the two together. Rounded edges on integral pulls and door edges create pinstripe detailing that adds richness and a sense of playfulness to the design. This kitchen is truly one of a kind! The customer found this stunning tile overseas on a trip and created her entire kitchen around the design. The Beaded Inset cabinets are finished in Lakeshore by Sherwin Williams and then glazed with an Onyx pinstripe for added character. The door style is CRP-10 with an F007 framing bead and P-420 panel raise. Drawers are Hastings style, and the finishing touches are Crown 33 and Colonial 10 base board.

To make the peninsula feel special, we changed the counter material from white engineered quartz to a blue/ grey natural quartzite, flowing down in a graceful waterfall. The stone's brown veins pick up on the walnut tones of the shelves and range hood, as do cognac stools. A slim inset of brushed brass near the top of the cabinets adds a luxe detail. Slim brushed gold hardware echoes the pinstripe.
