Amber Freda Garden DesignThese East Village terraces were inspired by the lush, romantic feel of the Mediterranean. We used a combination of wood and terra cotta planters filled with an abundant mix flowering vines, annuals, perennials, and trees. To help soften a large brick wall on one side, we used wood planters with built-in trellises to grow flowering vines such as climbing hydrangeas, clematis, and mandevilla. This Park Avenue residence actually features three separate rooftop terraces. One terrace is made for entertaining and features a built-in fireplace, inset jacuzzi, bluestone patio, custom-built wood planters, an outdoor kitchen, and ceramic pots filled with boxwoods and flowers. The upstairs terrace feels like a private oasis surrounded by lush birch trees and roses that soften the view on all sides. Another smaller terrace off the master bedroom is charmingly intimate and features a mix of serene evergreens and comfortable lounge chairs. Amber Freda Garden DesignFew materials can match the natural beauty of a newly installed wood deck and fence, which were a dramatic transformation for this small backyard patio. A paraffin treatment brings out the rich colors of ipe, a hardwood with a 30 year life expectancy. We gave the fence a contemporary twist by running the boards horizontally and varying the width, gradually thinning them as they go up. The bluestone pavers add a bit of contrast and visual interest on the patio floor. In order to save space, our clients asked us to build the planters into the fence itself, rather than resting any free-standing planters on the patio floor. Amber Freda Garden DesignThis Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn rooftop garden features custom-made cedar planter boxes on casters, a cedar L-shaped bench sectional with built-in storage under the seats, an outdoor bar, powder-coated metal planters, and metal chairs from Design Within Reach. Lush perennial plantings include maiden grasses, pink anemones, sedum, lavender, arborvitaes, birch trees, and 'Limelight' hydrangeas. UserAs part of this Replacement Dwelling Development, this area between the two large Oak Framed Buildings has been created to form a focal feature in between both buildings. A once totally over grown shaded area due to 20 Leylandi trees being in this part of the Developments Curtilage, this now lovely sunny area has been carefully landscaped with a wonderful dry stone curved wall, with Oak cleft gates and Oak raised beds with Box Ball 'Cloud' Planting. Recalimed York Stone Flags and Setts have also been used and allowing the Oak of the buildings and raised beds to naturally 'silver' will go onto compliment the beautiful 200 year old stone. The Dry Stone wall is soon to be capped off with bull nosed stone coping stones. Pretty Pink structural Tulips have been planted for Spring Colour and pretty feathery Cosmos has been planted for Summer Planting. The Box Balls remain a constant structural planting element all year round and look stunning when frost covered. John Cullen low level Lighting in the raised beds and walk way allow these raised beds to look stunning in the evening.
