This private studio, built in collaboration with producer, engineer, and pianist Ian Miller, is a fully custom creative space designed around his workflow and artistic process. The project blended NILES’ technical execution with Ian’s hands-on finishing work, resulting in a studio where every corner has intention and every system supports a seamless, plug-and-play workflow. The structure began as a barn-style two-car garage with a second floor. After exploring several layouts and engineering options, we landed on a design that leveraged the high ceilings and existing footprint to create a dynamic and spacious acoustic environment. Generous daylight from surrounding windows connects the interior to the outdoors, while layered textures, warm tones, and custom finishes create a grounded yet inspiring atmosphere. The Control Room is fully isolated from the rest of the building with sound-reducing wall systems, a full soft-ceiling bass trap, tuned corner traps, treatment throughout, and full-lite doors for controlled transmission and visibility. Though modest in size, it delivers accurate monitoring and integrates smoothly with the larger live environment. Roasted Bean Studio was built to support any direction Ian pursues—from producing to mixing to live performance. The space provides the sonic palette and creative flexibility needed for a wide range of projects, offering a visually inspiring and acoustically reliable environment that empowers his work every day.

Designed and realized by WL3 Designs, The Albero Respite is a paradigm of contemporary minimalist architecture, where serene simplicity meets functional elegance. Named after the Italian word for 'tree', the home pays homage to the solitary olive tree gracing its courtyard, symbolizing peace and resilience. This single-story structure emerges from the landscape with clean lines and expansive glass facades that dissolve the barriers between indoor space and the natural world outside. White, the dominant hue, serves not just as a design choice but as a canvas for the play of light and shadow, changing with the sun’s whims. WL3 Designs has meticulously crafted each element of The Albero Respite to embody the principles of sustainable design while providing a haven of tranquility. The home's orientation and glazing are engineered to optimize natural light and promote passive heating and cooling, reducing the need for artificial climate control. It stands as a testament to the possibility of living in harmony with nature without forgoing modern luxury and comfort. Designing for the desert requires in-depth understanding of the extreme temperatures that range here. From freezing temperatures in the winter to blistering hot ones in the summer, the region contains every extreme, and the homes that are built in it must also. Rains and wind, endless sunshine, these are all elements that we considered when designing for this region. In addition to using modern strategies, we referred to ancient design concepts embraced by native people for generations, combining the two to create modern homes in this timeless, desert environment.

Space is at a premium in Birmingham, Michigan, and turf to run and play is a luxury. Our clients wanted to transform their small cut-up, outdated patio into an entertaining area with more space for dining, easy access to both doors, and a convenient grilling area while sacrificing as little turf as possible. We took the small separate hardscape spaces, brought them all together, and then designed a large step that would span both doors, creating a cohesive flow. We topped it off with a bump-out for a separate grilling area. We utilized Techno-Block Westmount in Merlot for a high-end material to this Birmingham home. This backyard is now classic and clean, providing more usable space. Best of all, we only reduced the total turf area by less than 5 square feet.

Dwarf fruit trees line the back yard behind the small warm season lawn. This lawn provides space for the young children to play. The footprint of this lawn has been reduced by at least 75%.

This 1,000ft² recording and production studio, built in 2021 for producer couple Latifah Alattas and Lucas Morton, was designed as a fully custom creative environment that supports writing, mixing, and collaboration at the highest level. Both Latifah and Lucas are multi-instrumentalists, engineers, and mixers, and the studio reflects the full range of their workflows—visually inspiring, technically precise, and intuitive in every room. The facility was built from the ground up with a strong emphasis on architectural acoustics and plug-and-play connectivity. The layout includes two Control Rooms, multiple isolation booths, and shared common spaces, all tied together with seamless audio integration. No matter where you are in the studio, routing, monitoring, and communication remain effortless and consistent. Behind the aesthetic, the acoustic design is exceptionally robust. Six independent floating-floor systems support the suites, ensuring each room operates with minimal sound transmission. Tailored sound-reducing wall assemblies, full-lite doors, engineered window systems, and intentional treatment plans deliver clarity, isolation, and precision for tracking and mixing. Each space is mechanically decoupled, allowing multiple rooms to run simultaneously without compromise. For monitoring, both Latifah and Lucas chose Genelec “The Ones” series monitors with GLM calibration to ensure accurate translation and consistency across the entire facility. Natural light and a warm, welcoming aesthetic anchor the visual identity of the studio, reflecting the creative energy and personality of its owners. The result is a highly functional, beautifully crafted space where ideas can move freely and production can happen without limitations.

This project's goal was to creatively design for family lounging, urban gardening, and managing vehicular movement using architectural cues, wood and stone detailing to develop a seamless, unique layout with limited barriers. Taking advantage of mature vegetation, shade and view into the rear yard beyond the oversized sliding glass doors, we wanted to achieve a yard with limited barriers, soft edges, long vistas and a gentle transition between elevations. Stacking the two air conditioners and integrating elongated raised planters between deck landings with variegated semi-shade grasses anchored in the corner by a Japanese Maple allowed for an open view of the yard. The frosted glass panels increased the amount of light needed while providing the desired privacy for private entertaining and dining. We installed lightweight concrete patio slabs with long gaps to allow water to pass through, reducing pooling water and improving water flow to the large shade tree the client wished to retain. As shade gardens provide challenges, we could capitalize on the morning sun for a vegetable garden. The garden was also a transition corridor to access the custom play feature, lawn and zip-line behind the existing garage. The addition of a custom BBQ and charcoal grill embedded into the counter against the east side property limits stepped with the deck includes storage and additional seating. Finished with stone veneer, wood slats, and multi-sized pebbles retained by a gabion basket was a great contrast of natural finishes seamlessly blended together. Bon Appetit!

In order to make this kitchen more functional we had to play with the layout. We decided to switch the range and the fridge to better balance the space. We reduced the size of the bulky soffit to allow for taller cabinets and make the space feel more open. We shifted all the appliances down and added a built-in coffee machine & ice maker. In choosing the finishes, our client decided to go with an accent island. The white perimeter and gray stained island really updated this kitchen. Previously, the back half of the island sat at bar height. To make efficient use of space, we made it all one height. Since we extended the entire kitchen, this deleted the dining table. To accommodate for this, the large island seats six & has additional storage underneath! We used a beautiful quartz throughout the kitchen and bar area. We used a gray glass subway tile for the backsplash with an accent tile in a similar color over the range. We used that same accent tile for the bar adjacent to the kitchen. This area was previously a blank wall that our client didn't know what to do with. We added some storage, 2 wine fridges, and floating shelves with lighting to brighten up the space.

This custom millwork wall was thoughtfully designed to bring elegance, organization, and creativity together in one cohesive space. Created for a young artist and avid reader, the design maximizes storage while maintaining a calm and sophisticated atmosphere that feels timeless rather than overly youthful. Floor-to-ceiling cabinetry in a soft natural wood finish provides extensive concealed storage for books, art supplies, and ongoing creative projects. Frosted glass upper doors help soften the visual weight of the cabinetry while subtly concealing contents, reducing visual clutter, and minimizing dust collection — an ideal solution for a space with many treasured items and materials. Inside the cabinetry, custom interior drawer storage was accented in soft blue as a subtle and playful nod to the client’s favorite color. Beyond adding personality, the integrated drawer system helps keep creative supplies beautifully organized and easily accessible while creating a thoughtful moment of contrast within the light wood millwork. The integrated desk area features a gently curved work surface that extends into the room, encouraging both independent creativity and collaborative projects with friends. Warm brass hardware and lighting introduce refined detailing, while soft blue accents throughout the space create a calming and cohesive palette. THE SETUP This remodeling project transformed a catchall room into a cinema-style theater designed for family entertainment and relaxation. The original space, which housed a small TV, older furniture, and various children’s toys, was reimagined to create a sophisticated, adult-friendly home theater with ample seating and modern amenities. Design Objectives: Create a Dark Theater Space: Ensure the room mimics a traditional movie theater environment. Provide Comfortable Theater Seating: Include enough seating for the family and guests. Integrate a Dry Bar Area: Include a space for snacks and drinks. Optimize Space Utilization: Maintain an open area for additional activities. Design Challenges: Natural light: The room was too bright for a theater setting. Seating: Accommodating six theater seats without obstructing views. Lighting: Ensuring the lighting does not interfere with the viewing experience. AV: Finding a clutter-free solution for AV equipment. Dry Bar: Incorporating a dry bar area without overcrowding the space. Viewing: Ensuring the TV placement allows for comfortable, optimized viewing. THE RENEWED SPACE Design Solutions: Natural Light Control: Installed blackout remote shades on the back window and painted the walls dark charcoal to reduce natural light infiltration. Seating Arrangement: Built a second level for the back row of seating to ensure unobstructed views for all movie watchers. Lighting Design: Installed sconces on either side of the window that shine from the sides (to avoid interfering with the viewing experience). AV Equipment Storage: Utilized existing recess areas with custom shelves matching the cabinetry and concealed cables using a PVC pipe system. Dry Bar Integration: Created a dry bar area on the back wall with a refrigerator, candy storage, and a small counter space for a popcorn machine and ice maker, with locked drawers to prevent unsupervised access. Optimal Viewing Distance: Evaluated multiple floor plans and placed the TV on the most suitable wall to ensure optimal viewing and comfortable reclined seating. Final Thoughts: The completed home theater has been a resounding success, providing a versatile space for the entire family. The thoughtful design and meticulous attention to detail have created a functional and enjoyable home theater that meets diverse needs, from watching movies and playing video games to relaxing and reading. The areas to the sides of the theater seats can accommodate spillover seating or activity zones. The area housing the AV equipment also includes extra shelves for storing snuggle-grade movie viewing blankets. This theater space has become a favorite hangout spot, offering comfort and entertainment for everyone. This view shows the dual level theater seating, bean bags, open AV shelving on the right to tuck the cables which our installers ran behind the TV with PVC piping.

We had a several challenges to face with this project. Not only did we need to update a dated landscape to accommodate two seemingly different design tastes (modern & minimalistic vs natural english garden), we were tasked with improving the property’s drainage, improving the driveway access, reducing water usage and plant maintenance, and fixing a crumbling wall. To marry the two design tastes, we started with the more modern elements of metal planters and softened the landscape with mass plantings of ornamental grasses and native sedge. These grasses act as a turf replacement that do not need to be mowed and require less regular watering. On each side of the yard we constructed new cedar fences to provide updated and additional privacy. In addition, we poured a new concrete wall to replace the existing retaining wall and play off the new modern vibe.

We closed off the open formal dining room, so it became a den with artistic barn doors, which created a more private entrance/foyer. We removed the wall between the kitchen and living room, including the fireplace, to create a great room. We also closed off an open staircase to build a wall with a dual focal point — it accommodates the TV and fireplace. We added a double-wide slider to the sunroom turning it into a happy play space that connects indoor and outdoor living areas. We reduced the size of the entrance to the powder room to create mudroom lockers. The kitchen was given a double island to fit the family’s cooking and entertaining needs, and we used a balance of warm (e.g., beautiful blue cabinetry in the kitchen) and cool colors to add a happy vibe to the space. Our design studio chose all the furnishing and finishes for each room to enhance the space's final look.
